Donetsk, Ukraine places

Naberezhnaya It is a nice place for taking a walk. Beautiful view of the river matches the modern landscaping style of the park. There is a big playground for children. You can see a sunrise in the morning. It is also a popular place for fishing. It continues on the right side of Illicha Prospect and heads into Shevchenko Boulevard then goes till the Mira Prospect.

Direction: river Kalmius crossing of Illicha Prospect and Naberezhnaya St. Take a walk down or take a trolleybus number 4,7,11 or marshrutka 4, 4a, 24, 11a from the Lenin Square to the river bank by Illicha Prospect, it is one trolleybus stop.


Sherbakova Amusement Park

The park is located in the heart of the city. It has two entrances: one through the walking bridge heading from Universitetskaya St. (Take any trolleybus, bus or marshrutka on Universitetskaya St till the bus stop Sherbakova Park), the second entrance is through the main gate located on the south behind Amstore shopping mall and Circus on Leninskiy Prospect (It is generally the same transport which turns from Universitetskaya St. to Leninskiy Prospect, bus stop Circus).

By the south entrance there is a big rosary planted by ambassadors of European Union during the Europe Day festival in Donetsk. If you walk through the bridge – you will head to the amusement section. You can also rent a boat on the boat station. On weekends there is a special army


orchestra playing popular tunes near the stage. On holidays there are different cultural events taking place in the park. There are few playing grounds for children, wonderful landscape scenery, lots of cafes, snacks stalls different amusement attractions. Entrance is free. You can buy tickets for amusement attractions in small stalls located in the amusement area. There is a sign Kacca (cash department) on them. The price range is from 5 to 25 grivna. Have fun!

Horse riding center Equicenter A multifunctional horse riding center will a hotel, cafe, riding grounds etc. Qualified trainers will help you to practice your skills. Organizes different international horse riding competitions. The ground and horses are among the best in Europe.


State Art Museum The museum is considered to be the cultural center of the city and its region. It contains more than 11 thousand items of paintings, sculptures and graphic works of Russian, Greek, Italian, Ukrainian artists of different time period from all over the world.

Train Museum There are 25 rare old units of train cars in the museum. Oldest of them 1898 General Voroshilov's interior-car. The steam locomotive "b-2062" from 1929, is stored in a museum also known under a name "Cuckoo". It is a unique exhibit in the CIS.

In 2006 the exposition has replenished with machine "Amphibian" - during post-war time, such cross-country vehicles were used by the militarized protection of railway strategic objects.

More than 2000 exhibits are presented by documents, awards, types of clothes, the railway tool and the equipment, old photos and other collection materials. In


the museum collection: the edition booklet from 1909, devoted to 25th anniversary of the Ekaterinian railway, uniform from 1936, Morze telephone sets, dofferent devices are stored. The exposition of museum is located in a former building of depot of Juzovo station.

Workers of a museum try to find and make restoration of old railway technics. Samples of steam locomotives of series FD, L, OV, TA were found and restored, AUG, EM, EY, the axial formula 0-2-0 samples of diesel locomotives of series TEZ, 2TE116, CHME5 and an electric locomotive of series VL8, a carload rolling stock are presented. The car which well-known military leaders General Brusilov and Voroshilov used finished its restoration.


Planetarium To strengthen its position of a cultural center in Ukraine, the city of Donetsk commissioned a new planetarium that would educate tourists and local visitors alike. For the visualization part, it was integrated with a Barco system, based on the demanding specifications for seamless, geometrically correct imagery set forth by the planetarium. By the pioneered techniques such as edge blending and warping, visitors are immersed in virtual landscapes of space, planetary systems and star constellations. The planetarium remains open to visitors 7/7.

Botanical Garden The Donetsk Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (DBG) is one of the largest gardens of Europe. Its total area is 203 hectares. It became a man-made green treasury of industrial Donbass. In 1981 it was confirmed as a memorial of landscape gardening art, and in 1992 the Garden was referred to the objects of natural-reserved fund of Ukraine of nation-wide value. In DBG there has been developed a new direction of modern science - industrial botany which studies interrelation of a green plant with the industrial environment.


Forged Figures Park (Park kovanih figur) There are many kinds of parks that one can find in Donetsk. There are parks with extensive woods, rectilinear alleys, stretching between vantage points, galleries, statues and gazebos; there are parks devoted simply to green landscape, a salubrious and attractive breathing space as a relief from the densely populated and industrialized city. There are parks with a romantic design. But no matter what kind of park it is, its primary purpose is to provide for passive or active recreation.

The facilities in parks may include outdoor theatres, zoos, concert halls, historical exhibits, concessions for dining and dancing, amusement areas, boating, and areas for sports of all kinds. Among all these parks there is one that stands out - it is a park devoted to handcrafted wrought-iron works. In fact, there is no other similar park in the world.

This park was laid out in 2001 in the city of Donetsk. The initiator was Viktor Burduk, director of the Ukrainian Handcrafted Wrought Iron and Forge Company Hefest. The City Council supported the idea, provided the necessary means and workforce and the park came into existence. Mr Burduk provided handcrafted wrought-iron works to be installed in the park.


Donbass Arena Park Do you remember that Donetsk is a city of one million roses? Landscapes of Donbass Arena park will also match this hallmark of the city once known all over the USSR. It's of special value for Donetsk image in the view of preparations for EURO 2012.

To this end, the landscape area of the stadium is under arrangement. However, the planting will have been completed by the opening of the stadium.

Arena Park will certainly have numerous "cult" places, as the capacities of the stadium are really breathtaking. Now the landscaping design is being finished. If you go a bit down the park to Victoria Hotel (high white building with glass facade), you will see a very nice park with fountains, fish, small decorative bridges, children playing ground, green lawns with benches.It is a very quiet place in the heart of Donetsk.

Direction: Take a tram number 1 till the Bittechnika stop or trolleybus number 8 till the stop Komfort. Then go on the direction to the park.


Pushkin Boulevard A long green boulevard in the center of the urban city. Starts from the Regional Council and goes down along 6 long blocks. Each part has different style and pattern. First block is represented by the nice fountain with Mertsalov's Palm - the symbol of Donetsk. Then you can see various modern statues made by local designers. The boulevard is full of trees, flowers, bushes of different forms, lots of benches will comfort your walking breaks. Second block has a monument "Donbass rivers". It is an ancient boat used by Don Cossacks. Kalmius river used to be a border between the territories of Don Cossacks and Zaporizhya Cossacks. Under the boat one can see a real big steam of water. It seems like the boat is moving. Third block is has another pretty fountain and a marvelous children ground. Fourth block is located near the Drama theatre. It consists of the Pushkin Monument (A famous Russian poet) and a small concert area with long benches for the concert visitors. During weekends there are concerts of local groups and groups from another cities. Fifth block has another style. There are plenty of modern figures. The best figures were taken from the annual Donetsk festival and placed in the boulevard. This year one can see a ''steppe'' theme. At the end of this block Shakhtar's football team fan store is located. Sixth block represents various sculptures. Everyday there is an exhibition of art by local painters. One can buy any piece of art he likes. It is possible to bargain because the prices are overestimated. Pushkin Boulevard is located between Artyoma and Universitetskaya streets and crosses Shevchenko Boulevard, Teatralniy Prospect, Gurova st., Komsomolskiy Prospekt, Sadoviy Prospect.

How to come to Donetsk from Kyiv ?

First let me great you, our guest, in amazing country Ukraine. If you are reading this guind it means you are going to arrive to our capital – Kyiv!

Since you’ve decided to visit our beloved city here is short guide how to get from

airport Boryspyl to another crucial place for interns and visitors – Train Station. When your plane lands you get to the main building of airport where you pass the

registry and get your luggage. (Follow the signs in English) After that you need to get to main hall and turn right where you’ll notice Currency

Exchange. We suggest not to change more than 10-20 dollars in airport since currency rate is not the best, plus all in all you’ll need less than 5 dollars to pay for the bus to train station.

Then, when you got some grivnas (That’s how our money is called=)) in your pocket

your destination is bus stop. To get there you need to go to the exit of Terminal B where you are in and head to the right.

There you’ll notice big grey busses with «Полет» word written on them. If you want to be sure just try to ask anyone near in English or in Russian

.Pronunciation we’ll be something like “Izvinite, etot avtobys idet na vokzal?” which literally means “Excuse me, this bus goes to train station?”

When you are in, lady will go through rows and collect pay for fare. It should be

approximately 5 dollars in grivnas which is 35 grivnas) Enjoy your ride, final destination of the bus is Train Station, it takes about 30-40

minutes to get there. Meanwhile you can enjoy Kiev’s landscapes and scenery) When you’ll get of the bus at the railway station (this is the last bus stop), enter the

Cultural Evening what is it

This is evening, when all LC and all the interns meet and show each other their cultures. We have fun. After that we have fun. And after that we go asleep. Then we get up and have fun again! Capiche? hehe

you need to do: PPT presentation in national dress or with national drinks or with national food or with national jokes or with some dance or with national staff which would shock us and everybody around ;) THINK CREATIVELY!

and don't forget to bring the traditional drink of your country and a t-shirt that will remind us of you and one more t-shirt which will be with you (there are we will write you oue wishes) ... and don’t forget about drinks (have I already said about this?)…and don't forget to bring some small souvenirs …
