Cut FabricFrom 5/8 yard gray animal fabric, cut:

• (96) 33/4" × 17/8" rectangles for piecing

From 1/8 yard amber lion fabric, cut:• (24) 17/8" × 17/8" squares for piecing

From 7/8 yard aqua stripe fabric, cut:• (48) 51/2" × 21/2" rectangles for piecing• (5) 11/2"" × WOF for inner border

From 3/4 yard gray Xs fabric, cut:• (24) 51/2" × 51/2" squares for piecing

From 1/2 yard cream X fabric, cut:• (24) 41/2" × 41/2" squares for piecing

cut in half, twice, diagonally From 1/8 yard rust X fabric, cut:

Make (24) Cross UnitsSTEP 1: Sew (1) cream X triangle to each side of (1) gray animal rectangle. Press toward gray. STEP 2: Repeat to make a second triangle unit. STEP 3: Sew (2) gray animal rectangle to each side of an amber lion square. Press toward gray. STEP 4: Join units, aligining seams in the center. STEP 5: Trim unit to 51/2" × 51/2".Make a total of (24) Cross Units.

For each block, use (2) gray 51/2" × 51/2" squares, (4) 51/2" × 21/2" aqua stripe rectangles, (2) Cross Units, and (1) 21/2" × 21/2" rust X square.Using the diagram for reference, sew units together in rows, pressing seams open. Sew rows together into a block, pressing all seams open.Blocks should measure 121/2" × 121/2".Make a total of (12) Double Cross Blocks.

Assemble QuiltReferring to image (below), sew blocks together, row by row, pressing seams open. Join rows, two at a time (Row 1 to Row 2, Row 3 to Row 4), pressing all seams open. Quilt top should measure 361/2" × 481/2".Sew inner border strips into one continuous strip. Sew inner border strip to left and right sides of quilt, pressing toward inner border. Trim to be even with the quilt. Sew inner border strip to top and bottom of quilt, pressing toward inner border. Trim to be even with the quilt.Sew side outer border strips to left and right side of quilt, pressing toward outer border. Trim to be even with the quilt.Sew top/bottom outer border strips into one continuous strip. Sew outer border strip to top and bottom of quilt, noting orientation of fabric. Press toward outer border. Trim to be even with the quilt.

AppliquéFollow assembly instructions on panel fabric to prepare each safari animal, but do not add PolyFil, and do not leave an opening for turning. Sew all the way around the animal shape. Gently cut a slit in the fabric on the back side, just large enough for turning animal shape right side out. NOTE: Animal shape will be reversed when inside out.

Clip corners and curves. Turn each animal right side out, and press.Refer to image below to place one safari animal in each gray square. When you are pleased with the placement, pin in place.Zebra: Appliqué in place by stitching around zebra body, leaving mane, ear, and tail to be free-flowing.Giraffe: Appliqué in place by stitching around giraffe body, leaving mane, ear, and tail to be free-flowing.Lion: Appliqué in place by stitching around lion body and head, leaving mane to be free-flowing.(OPTIONAL) Elephant: You may opt to stuff the elephant to accompany the quilt as a plush toy. Or, use the following instructions to use the elephant as a quilt label, as we did for the sample quilt: Use a permanent pen, such as a Micron pen, to add a note behind the ear. Appliqué in place by stitching around elephant body, leaving ears and tail to be free-flowing.

Finish QuiltLayer quilt top, batting, and backing. Quilt as desired.Sew binding strips together into one continuous strip. Fold binding in half lengthwise with wrong sides together, and press. Sew binding to the front side of the quilt, starting at any side. Hand stitch or machine sew binding to back of quilt.
