Senator Haskell said that he had no iniorniation that an interstate transpo-tion hadoccurredin anyof thesecases. lie saidhefelt thiswastoobigfor the local authorities, andthe FBI with its resources couldcometo asolution.He saidtheranchersare gettingconsiderablyworriedoutthereandhefelt ii theFBI wouldjustentertheinvestigationit wouldhaveadeterrenteffect. he hadreceivedacallfrom Dansi-Idwards,editor ofthepaperinBrush, Colorado, who furnished information that U. S.Army helicoptershad beenseenin thevicinity of where some of thecattle were mutilatedand that he, Edwards, had been threatened but Senator Haskell did notknow whatsort oi threats Edwards had received or bywhom.

.' Hewas advised that this irnformationnwould be furnished toour Denver Office and that Denver would closely follow the situation.Senator Haskell expressed his appreciation;

Senator HASKELL, in advance, had released astatement to the;'_press indicating that he was asking the FBI to enter the =, .

investigation. Several inquirieshave been received and I haveindicated to the news media that the Senator: letter was

being referred to FBI Headquarters in Washington and thathisrequest would be resolved. Upon being pressed I indicated thatI, personally, knew of no legislation specifically covering themutilation of livestock which would enable the FBI to enter.such an investigation. ' _- - _ evi ~

The fact thatallegations have beenmade of the loss of livestockin Zl states under similar circumstances strongly suggests the very _real possibility that the crossing of state lines is involved and, thisalone, I feel, should justify the participation of the FBI in this case.
