Finally, mark your calendars for Memorial Day weekend (May 29-31) as we celebrate the grand opening of Splash Valley Water Park. There’s always plenty to do in a Roanoke County Park. We’re your recreation connection!

Roanoke County Stormwater and Environmental Engineering Team • (540) 772-2096

Roanoke County performs routine inspections of storm water management facilities to ensure that all facilities are adequately maintained and functioning properly. The proper function of these facilities is critical for flood protection, erosion prevention, water quality, and public health and safety. Regular maintenance is needed to ensure the lasting function of these structures.

Although Roanoke County inspects stormwater ponds, it is still the property owner’s or Home Owners Association’s responsibility to inspect and maintain their own ponds. What should YOU as a property owner do to keep your pond working properly?

• Inspect the pond regularly and after major rainfall events for erosion, standing water or structural problems that may cause a safety or health hazard• Document all inspections and maintenance• Submit documentation of inspections and maintenance to Roanoke County annually

For more detailed information on your stormwater pond, how to maintain it, or inspection and report-ing requirements, please read the Stormwater Pond Maintenance Guide now available on the storm-water webpage (www.RoanokeCountyVA.gov) or contact one of the Pond Inspection Team members.

Roanoke County Stormwater Inspection Program

Ask us how to be WaterWise!Waterwise is a “water quality” initiative being undertaken by the Roanoke County Department of Community Develop-ment to educate the citizens of Roanoke County about wa-ter quality and stormwater management. Take a look inside this insert for information on what the County is working on and how you can get involved.

FEMA Flood Prone Property Purchase and Demolition Roanoke County was awarded a FEMA Flood Mitigation Assis-tance (FMA) grant to purchase and demolish two Repetitive Loss properties located in West County. Both properties will re-main green space forever. FMA grants are issued to localities by FEMA to prevent future loss of property and life by remov-ing structures that have a long history of flooding from the special flood hazard area.

What is an impaired waterway?

A stream or river that does not meet State Water Quality standards because pollutant amounts are too high. The Virginia Department of Environ-mental Quality (VDEQ) maintains a list of impaired waters that is updated periodically. Roanoke County has 13 streams that are impaired.

What is TDML?

TMDL stands for Total Maximum Daily Load. VDEQ establishes a TMDL for streams to restore and maintain the water quality of the stream. A TMDL is the total amount of pollutant a stream can receive and still meet water quality standards. A TMDL has been completed for 7 of the 13 impaired streams in Roanoke County.

We have 16 parks with picnic shelters that may be reserved between April 1 and October 31 each year, with reservations beginning February 1. Shelters are open to the public unless they have been reserved by another group. Fees to reserve a shelter are listed below. Make advance reservations by calling Don at 540-387-6078 ext. 478 to guarantee the use of a particular shelter, on a certain day, during a specific time. We recommend 30 days advance notice to reserve a shelter. No refunds are provided if a reservation is cancelled; however, we will reschedule your reservation to another available time or date during our current season. “Special Use Permits” from the County may be required for certain events.
