Mark White, chief assistant of Radio 1 told me this week: "We will have much stronger programmes at the weekends now, with some new shows coming in as well. "In these changes Jimmy Savile gets a new Saturday afternoon show at 5 p.m. called "Speak -Easy" and there will be another programme to launch new Disc Jockey talents". The changes mean . . . out goes David Symonds in favour of Dave Lee Travis, who will compere the Sunday morning show. Terry Wogan steps into the Monday to Friday 2 p.m. - 4.15 p.m. spot, with Dave Cash moving to the early evening commuter show, replacing Tony Brandon. THE Robin Gibb affair took a new turn this week whenwrits were issued against the NEMS Organisation

and impresario Vic Lewis.They were taken out by The Robert Stigwood Organisa-

tion less than a week after Robin-aged 19-was reportedto have signed a new management deal.

In the writ-which was served on Monday, the StigwoodOrganisation claimed damage resulting from the new deal.

Robin - theREAL BeeGee sound ?

IVE minus three. That means there are just two Bee Gees remaining with "Don't ForgetTo Remember" climbing the top ten just as Robin's poignant "Saved By The Bell" is

beginning its sad descent. I don't see how Barry and Maurice Gibb can truthfully call them-selves the Bee Gees when it was the beautiful, aching voice of their brother which made"Massachusetts" and "Gotta Get A Message To You" number -one successes.

for a long time producer of "Ready Steady Go" (aaah!remember "RSG" that paradise of mime, dancer;, mobilecameras, and a halfway decent attempt to extend pop T Vpast the frigid Top 10 format) is readying herself toproduce some pop TV programmes in Los Angeles.

Vicki wants it to be a six part series of hour long shows,describing the history of rock and roll.

However, there is a problem.Rock 'n' roll, according to Vicki, has a blind spot.

Around the time of the Coasters, Buddy Holly, EddieCochranam Cooke, Drifters and so on, the film world

HollywoodH(either or TV) wasn't really concerned withgetting it all down like they do today. Apart from theBill Haley academy award attempts, and material like"Teenage Disc Jockey Meet the Monster from the BikiniBeach Party WIn."1-1 Annette Funicello", rock and rollersdid their thing on those mammoth tours of one-nighters.

So . . . AFTER travelling to the Isle ofWight on Saturday straightfrom work we finally arrived

After paying two pounds we gotinto the arena, though we couldn'tsee the stage. When Tom Paxtoncame on we could hardly hear himfor helicopters playing games overthe top of us. This continued throughthe Pentangle. Before Julie Felixcame on we had to ask for the noiseto be kept down. Julie was verygood, and in spite of a cold sangseveral extra songs. Ritchie Havenswas fantastic, but we had to sitshivering waiting for the promisedthree hours of Dylan and the Band.

When at last Dylan did appearall the old magic had disappeared.A few people started to trickle awayafter the first song. His faithful fanswould have forgiven his appearingas an average country and westernsinger with the group, but to lessthan an hour we were told "Dylanhas disappeared and so can you."Most people were so tired, dis-appointed and disgusted they justwalked out. Had it been a footballcrowd there would surely have beenriots.

Ditto Dionne Warwick. How-ever then came Jim Webb, very hot with "Phoenix","MacArthur Park" and so on and decides that Thelma hasthe voice for him. Together they work for five months onan album for which Webb wrote the whole thing, includ-ing seven new songs for Thelma to premiere.

Result is that Thelma is getting highly rated as a goodindividual stylist with a fine choice of material.

Rather the same way that Bacharach and David useDionne Warwick as their showcase.

JEFFERSONAirplane, with B. B. King and Who played

an open air festival that was better than most atTanglewood which is in the woods and hills of Massachu-setts. Ordinarily Tanglewood is the home and host of asummer long classical music binge that draws around8,000 people to a concert. Up until the Who -Airplane -Kingconcert the audience record was 16,000.

The triple headed bill, presented by Bill Graham theFillmore King dragged 22,000 fans to dig the sounds withno trouble.

Graham intends to book the Who into New York's Fill -more for around four of five consecutive nights. He wantsthem to get full exposure so they can perform the com-plete "Tommy" opera every night. The Who are, with TenYears After, the strongest pulling British group on theAmerican scene.

HIS week sees a renaissance forthe Kinks. It's five years sincethey first topped the charts with"You Really Got Me." Part oftheir onslaught is the release of"Shangri-La" from Ray Davies'pop opera, "Arthur - Or TheRise And Fall Of The British

Empire"."We're really a rhythm and blues outfit, but

we want to do a little bit more than that," Raysaid. "We've changed somewhat over the lastyear and I've been working on 'Arthur' since I gotthe idea of a pop opera early in '68. It took threemonths to record and we finished it about threeweeks ago.

"Our new single, 'Shangri-La' comes from thealbum and although it lasts for five and a halfminutes I'm not going to cut it at all. The way Isee it, we won't get that many plays on radio andprobably no television because of its length butthere's nothing that can be cut out of it. Althoughit starts gently and quiet, it builds up.

"I'm very happy with the music for 'Arthur'and the script for a Granada TV spectacular hasbeen done. I co -wrote it with Julian Mitchell, andJo -Bergman Smith of Granada is setting thewheels in motion for the TV production. It willprobably be shown in late October. And I believeGranada are thinking of putting out a souvenirbook to coincide with the screening.

"On the show, actual actors will be used andthe music will be in the background. The albumshould have been out at the end of the month.but Granada want it held back to coincide withtheir production.

But the album will be issued ill America in a few weekstime to pave the way for the Kinks first tour there for threeyears.

"We're off to the States because there's a renewed interestin us," Ray stated. "I don't know for how long we'll be therethough. The last tour we did there was fine as far as theaudiences were concerned, but there was a mix-up backstageand with the organisation."

MARIJUANA AND PATERNITY STUNTSAccording to a publicity hand out from Warner Brothers

in America, there are going to be some pretty way outpromotional happenings for the Kinks. For example, a seriesof arrests for the possession of marijuana and paternitysuits are lined up for Dave Davies. The legal difficulties willbe sorted out in advance of course. This is all supposed "tostimulate interest in the group during the tour" accordingto Stan Cornyn who's planning the promotional tactics!

But that's not all. There's supposed to be a series of minorarrests for such things as loitering, impersonating an officerand income tax evasion will be arranged in all the citiesthe group play.

Another jape, (if it can be arranged), will be the closingdown of the Fillmore East halfway through the Kinks firstset under the pretext that they are destroying the hearingof the nation's youth. If this happened, an exclusive piecewill appear in an American magazine endorsing fluoridationand calling for the abolition of the statutory rape laws.

Asked about this, Ray said: "It must be some mad publicity stunt. I've met the people at Warner Brothers andthey're not like that."

There's a big interest in the Kinks in America and a bigfollowing due to such albums as "The Village GreenPreservation Society". So it seems uncalled for to indulge insuch stunts.

Some groups have changed their musical style over theyears, but the Kinks have remained much the same.

"We do what we like," Ray said. "I saw the Stones atHyde Park and they haven't really changed over six years.We had a hard sound to begin with and it's stuck with us.

"We're past the stage of having to force ourselves on thepublic. People know what they're going to get when theycome to see us. There is a difference in our stage andrecording work though. On stage we like to thump things outbut when we're in the studio the music is much moredelicate.

OPERA IThe Kinks explainabout 'ARTHUR'"One of the main things which I think is important is

picking the excitement in a number at the right time. WhatI mean is like the Stones in the Park film when they hadhundreds of drummers. If you could get a three piece groupthat can do that it's so much better."

What did Ray think would happen next on the pop scene?"I don't really know which way things are going," he

replied. "I don't know what the Kinks want. What I thinkwill happen is you'll get less new groups. If they're notgood musically then they will be sex -wise.

"I don't think you can progress musically if you're in apop group. But I think our group is becoming more interest-ing. You get people like me who get their projects together.But I can't see oscillators taking over the scene."

via the EMI studio'sloudspeakers. "Mmmm- sounds nice," saidPaul. Mr. McCartneyhad spoken. And inad-vertently provided thename for a group -if two musicians canlegitimately be called agroup.

So enter Sounds Nicein the charts. They hitthe best-sellers at thefirst time of asking. It'san unusual record, too.Called "Love At FirstSight", it's an instru-mental version of theJane Birkin-Serge Gains-bourg controversy -spe-cial "Je T'aime Moi NonPlus".

Which, of course,cocks a snoot at thosewho said the numberhad no memorable mel-ody but which soldpurely on the heavybreathing and the ec-static groaning of 'imand 'er

It's the Sounds Niceversion which has hadthe radio plays. WhileJane and Serge havebeen shunned by dee-jays and producers,Sounds Nice have sortof crept in through theback door.

TONY'S IDEASounds Nice is the

inspiration of that man -about -music Tony Hall.He knew two youngmen working separatelyin the music business,shrewdly summed uptheir potential, and gotthem together in aworking unit. His idea:to fill a gap in today'sscene by creating musi-cal instrumental albumswith a difference. Likehaving only two menin an instrumental team.

The men are TimMycroft and Paul Buck -master. Tim, featuredorganist, was formerlya member of the Gun.He's a Jimmy Smithfanatic, a singer of con-siderable talent andwrites songs at frenziedspeed.

Paul did the arrange-ment for the single, butthat's only one side ofhis talents. He is a clas-sical composer, a popcomposer, cello player-and it was his arrange-ment which helpedDavid Bowie and "SpaceOddity" into the TopFifty.

Actually there is athird man. ProducerGus Dudgeon, whomade the record andhas had previous suc-cess with the Bow DogBand, the Locomotiveand the aforementionedDavid Bowie.

Gus and Paul com-bined to re -build "JeT'aime" into a hauntingand easy -listening in-strumental. Mostly itwas based on the organwork of Tint.

The record is nowbeing rush - releasedround the world. Andwill be out on TamlaMotown in the States.

"Sounds nice," saidPaul McCartney. And hewasn't a bad judge.

HEY'I hope the British fans don't think we have deserted

them," said Sonny Bono during rehearsals for CBS -TV's New York chat programme, "The Mery Griffin Show"."It seems such a long time since we toured there.

"Still we are thinking about them," he added, with thatbroad Sonny Bono grin. "When the fans hear Cher's newalbum I think they will agree that it is really great. The lastLP we did was for Imperial Records and titled 'Backstage'.It was a bad LP and we felt awful about it.

"Another thing is that I noticed that Cher's version of'Walk On Gilded Splinters' was released in Britain as a single.We did not want that record issued there to compete withthe Marsha Hunt version. It was originally intended to bean LP track, and it is on the new album."

The new LP is called "3614 Jackson Highway". Why thetitle?-"It's quite simple really," said Cher. "Lots of peoplehave asked us about the title, but it is just the address ofthe recording studios."

Cher's albums are nowbeing produced by JerryWexler, who was responsiblefor Aretha Franklin's hitsand who produced the"Dusty In Memphis" albumlast year.

"He's great to work with,"continued Cher enthusiastic-ally. "We've got a fantasticsound on that album, reallygreat."

So what did Sonny do pro-duction -wise on the LP? "Iwas there in spirit," helaughed.

"Many of the songs on thealbum are Bob Dylan com-positions - like 'Lay BabyLay' and 'I Threw It AllAway'. Also there's 'SittingOn The Dock Of The Bay' and'For What It's Worth' whichis Cher's new single inAmerica," said Sonny. "I didnot write any of the materialon the album."

HARD WORK!This set is actually a com-

plete departure for Cher,away from the heavy back-ings and involved produc-tions. Will she eventually be-come a cabaret artist?

"I don't think that's verylikely," smiled Sonny, "shehas not got the right sort ofvoice and anyway thatwould be too much like hardwork!"

"By that he means that I

don't like working the clubsand concerts," said Cher."That's true really, it can be-come a bit of a drag after awhile.

"Trouble is, it is difficultfor us to know exactly whatour audience is, in terms ofage groups.

"I mean, we've moved outof the teenybopper stagenow and we have not quiteprogressed to anything else.Anyway, concert appear-ances must be a challengeand entertainment must be atotal thing. Every artiste

learns by his mistakes andwe must get away from theold Phil Spector wave now."

"I don't really want to bean artiste as such," saidSonny, "and it is now mymain ambition to mould Cherinto one of this country's topfemale artistes. She can makeit, too, the new album provesthat, I think.

NEW SINGLE"That doesn't mean that I

will stop recording with her.We will do another jointalbum as soon as we get thetime, but it must be good.You cannot get away withproduction tricks nowadays-we'll do a really good LPfor the next one. Also wehave a new joint single here(`You're A Friend Of Mine')which is being promoted."

Sonny and Cher don'tintend to give up touring."You cannot afford to. Peoplewant to see you make theseappearances and the artistehas a duty to the public inthis way." Then back to thedisc releases - "What's ourcurrent disc in Britain? It'sfunny I can't explain it, butour releases don't go outonto the international marketas they should. It's a shame.

CONCLUSIONS"The British fans will see

our movie though," saidSonny. "I was really proudof Cher in the film, she didher best and it was great.

"Film's called 'Chastity'and it is all about a younggirl going through life andthe day to day problems shemeets. Actually, I don't liketelling people about thepicture because I wouldmuch rather let them drawtheir own conclusions.

"Young people areaccepted in the music busi-ness but that still is not thecase in the film industry. I

So, one way and another,Sonny and Cher have a lotgoing for them at themoment. The big Bono -typeproduction bubble has burstand they must now look in anew direction and create anew sound for the albums."3614 Jackson Highway" isa big leap in the rightdirection for Cher, who isdeveloping into a fine enter-tainer. And if her perform-ance on the American TVshow is anything to go by,Sonny and Cher are reallyfighting back.

HAVING afamousbrother can ofcourse haveobvious ad-vantages. Aswith twenty-two - year -

old Keith Meehan, whosebrother Tony, famous drum-mer of the Shadows, arrangedand produced Keith's latestand first single "Darkness OfMy Life".

But there were times whenTony's fame bothered hisyounger brother.

"It did bother me a longtime ago," Keith admitted."But it doesn't so much any-more, mainly because Tony'snot in the public eye so much.What he did is past, it was atleast four years ago."

Now Keith is beginning tofind his own footing. "I beganwork as a drummer with anunknown group," he told me."I took up drumming notreally because of Tony, butbecause I was attracted to theidea of making your ownmusic and maybe it waschannelling some aggression."

Then a seemingly un-fortunate incident encouragedKeith to concentrate more onvocals.

"One day my drums werestolen from the van," Keithexplained. "Grech drums costa lot to replace, so it kept meaway from drumming, andhas done ever since. It reallybrought me down. After sixmonths though I joined somefriends as a vocalist. I'd beensinging vocal harmonies be-fore, and as the microphones

Keith became interested insongwriting, and earlier thisyear, while with the group,Direct Approach, he made ademo of his own number"Darkness Of My Life".

Brother Tony, who nowworks as an A&R man forParagon, heard the demo andwas so impressed that thesingle was finally released onPolydor's Marmalade label.

"I'd like to try again,"Keith told me. "So there willbe a follow-up record nomatter what happens. I'd alsolike to get back into drum-ming, It's two years sinceI've played, so it would takeat least six months to getback into it. Anyway I'd liketo form my own band, per-haps with an electric violin asthat's not a static instrument,it can create terrific at-mospheres, and with brass.

"As soon as somethingdefinite happens I can beginto work out a future."

Samantha was the topfemale vocalist in Aus-tralia and cleaned up onall the poll results. Be-cause she had reachedthe top down under, shedecided to try it in Eng-land which she looks onas being THE pop place.

Samantha is no new-comer to the pop busi-ness. She started radioand TV work at the ageof eight. Two yearslater she was performingon Australia's top TVshow "In MelbourneTonight" which she didregularly until she leftfor England.

You might have heardSamantha singing underthe name of Cheryl Gray.When she came to Eng-land thirteen monthsago, she re -did her Aus-tralian hit "You Made MeWhat I Am" released viaEMI. This number reallyestablished her inAustralia.

"My main ambition isto do musical comediesor stage and film work.I was going to play thefemale lead in "Bye ByeBirdie" in Australia, butthings were called off. Ilearnt jazz ballet for twoyears - the sort ofthing that Pans Peopledo on TV here. So Icould move about onstage!"

Quite an accomplishedyoung lady. But sheadmits that her first loveis singing. We'll see more

JAILHOUWE'VE seen the television show, via Granada earlier this week.

We've heard the album. The memories linger on about"Johnny Cash In San Quentin", when the folk -singer took hisguitar and his talent "inside" for one thousand convicts.

That song "San Quentin" was written by Johnny only the daybefore. He told the cons: "I think I understand a little bit howyou feel about some things . . ."

And: "I tried to put myself in your place and this is the waythat I feel about San Quentin."

"San Quentin, may you rot 'n burn in hell . . San Quentin,you bin livin' hell to me . . ." The prisoners packed in the dininghall. Maximum -security men held in their cells, but with themusic piped through. "San Quentin, you bin livin' hell to me . . ."

As one American reporter reported: "He finished his song ofSan Quentin. There was a moment's inmatesstood on their chairs and tables andbenches and screamed their ap-plause.

"Hunched forward on the benchesand leaning on the dining tableswhich had been set up to make anauditorium of the grim, grey high-ceilinged room that looks like a giantgarage, the men listened.

WIRE MESH PROTECTION"Overhead on the catwalk protec-

ted by wire mesh, the camera crewfrom Granada television shot downon the stage where Cash, in an opencollar blue shirt, his traditional longblack coat and dark grey slacks andblack hi ¢h-button shoes, stood be-fore a huge sign painted on thetomato -soup coloured wall. 'SanQuentin Welcomes Johnny Cash', itsaid.

"Over on the side above the smallloudspeakers a fork, thrown in somemess -hall demonstration, was embed-ded in the stucco block fifteen feetabove the floor."

And said a Granada man: "Thestriking difference between SanQuentin and a British prison is the

pause. Then the

seeming lack of overt discipline inthe American jail. The prisonerslounge around the yards and corri-dors. Everybody is on first -nameterms. Everybody seems so cool andrelaxed.

"But you can sense the tensionunderneath. You are very aware ofthe guns on the walls."

Granada was the first televisioncompany to get permission to shootinside the jail.

"San Quentin, what good do youthink you do. Do you think I'll bedifferent when you're through . . ."

Johnny Cash recalled the time hewas picked up by the Starkville Citycops in Mississippi for pickingflowers at the roadside. He spent thenight in jail and was fined 36 dollars."I'd sure like to meet the guy who'sgot my 36 dollars," he told the con-victs.

Hudson and Rick Danko are privi-leged to be five of the closestpeople to Bob Dylan. They and avery few others know what it'slike to work with Dylan the man.As they were preparing to leavethe Isle of Wight, I talked to leadguitarist Jamie Robertson.

Exactly what was their officialrelationship to the legendary folksinger? "We just fell in with theman. There were never anyhassles or strict schedules, simplya series of get-togethers. All oursessions, whether we were record -

to THE BANDing or not, were more or less justfor fun. I don't even rememberthat phone call we were supposedto have received from Dylan inthe beginning. We just got to-gether somehow now and then.We aren't even designated as hisbacking group. When we do play,all six of us get along fine, becausewe play when we want to andthere is no pressure. Bob is basic-ally quiet, but has a lot to sayabout his songs."

The band recorded a series of demon-stration records with Dylan, but never adisc for public sale. Since they are soclosely associated with Dylan, I askedwhy this was so and when it would beremedied .

"Those demos were recorded in thebasement of Big Pink (their previousabode complete with pink roof), but v,moved out of there. After that, we re-leased 'Music From Big Pink' and Dylandid 'John Wesley Harding', so the obviousthing we could have done to follow upwas an album with Dylan. For thatreason, we didn't do it-not the reasongiven at the press conference. Besides,there is all the time in the world to doit. We have until we are 45 or 50 andeven then it may not be done. Nobodyknows. "It was all for fun. This festivalis all for fun."

When the Band's LP hit the stands, itwas revolutionary in its effect on the popfield. There had been the occasionalcountry flavoured disc to make an impact,but never such a loosely styled form ofmusic as demonstrated in 'The Weight'.

Like Dylan's own unrestrained method,of delivery, here was something similarand just as strong in western influenc2.Canada the group's home, had neverbeen the centre of C&W cults and theBand had been known formerly as Levonand the Hawks, a rock and roll ensemble,

.so the question was how this changein style came about and why .

"This style that has been credited tous," said Jamie, "is not that much differ-ent to the one we always had. Even whenit was more in the rock vein, there wasstill a strong country sound within. Foras long as we've been going, it's beenvirtually the same."

There was a rumour that the Bandweren't too well known in their owncountry . . . "That's not true. We makefrequent trips back to Canada and we arepretty well received. We all live in NewYork, though, so we spend the majorityof our time in the States. We alsodo most of our recording in New Yorkand Dylan most of his in Nashville, sothat is another reason why we don't gettogether all that much."

Apparently then, when Dylan and theBand combine, it is rarely decided longin advance. Rather it is a spontaneousthing and may or may not happen to berecorded. As for the "all for fun" livedates, I can believe that, since they arehardly overworked by Dylan's heavybacking schedule. When they do appear,they are one of the best natural talentsto spring from the west and obviouslythe group to back Bobby.

'Viva BobbyMoore'

BOBBY Moore. OBE, footballer-captain of World Cup -winning England and of West Ham, former Footballerof the Year, star of soccer and of telly commercials.

And a fanatical pop fan.His latest representative "match": as honorary mem-

ber of the chart -happy Equals. What's more, the grouppresented him with a guitar to mark the occasion.

The link between soccer star and Pop group? Simplythat "Viva Bobby Joe" has been adapted down West Hamway to "Viva Bobby Moore" and a choir of thousands.based on the terraces at Upton Park. rings out with thechanged lyrics.

Bobby was going to appear on Radio One with the Equalsbut was held up by training. However he did turn LIPand join them al their own "training". alias rehearsals.

Said Bobby: "Of course I'm aware that they're singingthis song about me at West Ham, but once the gamestarts I've got too much on my mind to stand about andlisten to it. But pop music generally is one of my greatoff -duty interests. When I get into my car, it's the radioon first and the ignition second.

"I certainly like the Equals - can't understand why'Michael and the Slipper Tree' wasn't a big hit, But thenI'm a fan of pure pop, starting with the Beatles, but I'mnot so keen on the clever -clever scientific undergroundstuff.

"All I really want is something that takes my ear-something I can sing or whistle along to, in tune or outof tune."

With which Bobby picked up his guitar, earning Equalapproval for the way it appeared to fall into the rightposition. "I'd like to learn guitar one day." said Bobby."But then I'd aLso like to have a hash at drums."

we're phonies," Steve Row-land told me, whilelounging comfortably inhis dimly lit office, andreflecting on the FamilyDogg's decision not tomake a live appearanceuntil they have anotherhit.

"I like the undergroundscene and I respect themusicianship of groupslike Jethro Tull and TenYears After," Steve ex-plained. "But we want to-sing important songs. It'svery hard to make peopleaccept you for yourselves,but we have got to makea commitment to do this.A lot of people are justafraid to commit them-selves to what they be-lieve."

At thirty, and afterworking in the businessfor eighteen years, Stevebelieves he is doing thewisest thing, though heaccepts that he could beproved wrong.

"This will be the firsttime since I've worked ina group that I haven't goneout on gigs. It may be thebest thing for most people,but it depends on whatyou're looking for. I wantto see the Family Dogg asa concert act, somethingin the vein of Herb Alpertand Simon and Garfunkel.We want to be respected

as such."I asked Steve what had

made him decide thatFamily Dogg should 'nowwait for a second hit rec-ord before appearing infront of the public.

"We're preparing to doa two hour concert, sowe've got to have a goodact worked out in advance,"Steve told me. "The actthat we had alreadyworked out became out-dated, and I think it's bestfor us to plan another one.Another top twenty successwould give us a validreason to work."

That top twenty (orrather top ten) success itseems is not far away. Theday following our meetingthe Family Dogg weregoing into the studios tocut a beautiful KennyYoung composition "Ari-zona."

"I believe this is a topten hit at least," Steve saidwhile putting the demo onthe player. A minute laterFamily Dogg girl ChristineHolmes arrived and gavean impromptu performancealong with the disc.

But Steve is keepingquiet about the new femalemember of the FamilyDogg.

"I was very sorry to see

Zooey leave," Steve toldme, "She was a very nicegirl and I'd do anythingI could to help her getlaunched now. She reallyhas got a beautiful voice.I'll play you her trackfrom the album." The track, the sad andhaunting "MoonshineMary" was introduced by apoem from Steve.

"The album includesabout five poems by me,"Steve explained. "They'reall very personal, about agirl I once knew, but Ifound they fitted the moodof the album."

As, therefore, might beexpected, the album ismostly easy, though wist-ful, listening, and includesversions of "Love MinusZero," and "Reflections"and one happier bubble -gum sound "Run Run Run,Fly Fly Fly," and of course"Pattern People."

Certainly an album thatmore than hints at goodthings to come, and let'shope the Family Dogg don'tremain "phoney" or "plas-tic" too long!

ThisLP starts off with their mediocresingle "Tell All The People" andprogresses in quality throughout,until the final track "Soft Parade"is reached, and one understandswhat a mastery the group haveover the more subtle and intuitivemethods of pop communication.Basically on stage they're a sex -rock act, and this image is hardto get on record. The Doors don'tneed to try - their music speaksfor itself. Morrison's dead -panvoice, unstrained and often off -hand,the well co-ordinated backings, theguts inside the music, and thepower that lies behind, rather thandirectly in the songs, all add up toa fine underground (for Britain atleast) album.* * * *

ktra's advertisement picture forthis group - surely one of the

lewdest and most suggestive photo-graphs of all time. Anyway, therecord is what you might expect.The group are basically veryLOUD. They are blatantly noisy,sexual, horrible, and constitutewhat must be a frustrated groupies'dream. Lead singer Iggy (ughh!!)is alternatively coaxing, whining,shouting, blubbering, anything butsinging. But, this is where it's at,somewhere at least. Not a badrecord, not a good one, but cer-tainly, where something or other isat.* * *

His beautiful acoustic accompani-nients set to his own potentmaterial makes this a must forfolk addicts. It contains the origi-nal version of his famous "EarlyMorning Rain" and other songswhich demonstrate an individualityin a crowded field.* * * *

HE record itself is pretty goodT - the cover design and thetitle isn't - corny in fact. The

Hogs, led by Tony (T.S.) McPheehave developed a lot in the pastfew years, and although shades ofCanned Heat are not absent intheir work, they have one of themost powerful, authentic andmusically inventive sounds that iscurrently coming from Britain.Vocals are played -down in contrastwith the shreiking that's usuallydone. AT the beginning of the Britishgroup craze in the States In'64 this U.S. team hit the

heights with their "She's About AMover", one of the most powerfulsides ever to be made by a whitegroup recently. It's included here- re -done, but still with that virileR & B excitement. The rest ofthe album is atmospheric America- whiffs of folk influence pervadethroughout, the melodies are oftenhaunting and the lyrics show in-telligence. Certainly, one of thebest U.S. group LP's this month.

THE interesting ESP label isnow issuing some classicunderground sounds through

the good graces of Philips. ThisLP, recorded over four years ago,gives a good idea of where popmusic was to go. In retrospect,everything is quite accurate-fromthe drug spoof "I Couldn't GetHigh", through the C & W send-up "My Baby Done Left Me" to"Boobs A Lot", which is virtuallyindentical to the present DavidPeel style. Obviously not asgrotesque or utterly 'to the winds'as their latest stuff, but still in-dicative of current directions.* * * *

This superbalbum follows his blues -tinged ver-sion of the Clearwater hit (whoseleader the songwriter John Fogertywrites these sleeve notes!) andcontains beautiful gospel versionsof the above songs. GLOBE Propaganda have doneit again! After a number onehit with the cover of "Happy

Trails", they come up with an-other 'too much' design for CannedHeat's latest slab of very downhome white blues. The group gettheir teeth into some meat-listento "Canned Heat" or "Big Fat"-and they lay a tremendous sounddown. No disappointment, just theright amount of excitement andfreaky guitar. Nothing overdone.everything OK.* * * *

CHILD "Child" (Jubilee JGS8029 stereo).

AN American import, kindly sentto us from the old fifties hitstable of Jubilee. Group are

heavy. wild, noisy, quite good, notParticularly original. But they dohave some inventive touches hereand there, and their treatment ofsuch varying songs as "Ole ManRiver", "Hold On I'm Coming"are worth noting.* * *

BAKERLOO "Bakerloo" (HarvestSHVL 762 stereo).IN the nouveau manner of jazz-

rock fusions. Bakerloo are yetanother group more musically

competent than most. They tendto use attractive jazz percussionwork combined with mediocrematerial-but basically they are aquality outfit. Musically, this LP isworth listening to-they are good.Interesting to hear further records.* * * *

The beautifully designed andpackaged series retail at 25/11 recommended price each,and the careful re -mastering job that has been done-tapesplicing, cleaning up, and generally improving the qualityof patchy recordings, has made this into a timeless set,containing THE major jazz musician at his finest, andaccompanied by other fine instrumentalists. (Pye 17814), a typically splendidarrangement. Rather an unusualvoice: That of EARL OKIN on"Stop And You Will Become Aware"(CBS 4495), but it doesn't sound ahit. Interesting blend of two songs."Classical Gass" and "ScarboroughFair" (A and M 759), from theALAN COPELAND SINGERS -rather nice.

Rather struck with the personalityand voice of SUE LYNNE on "Baby,Baby, Baby" (RCA Victor 1874) -good song. too. Competent balladeerMIKE REDWAY comes up with-Through The Eyes Of Love" (RCA1873). And one of the most am-bitious productions of the week:"Tahiti Farewell" by THE HAY-STACK (United Artists UP 35035).a personal tribute to the productionabilities of Ken Lewis and JohnCarter.

GARY FARR: Hey Daddy; The Vicar And The Pope (Marmalade598017). Very catchy rhythm here and after a couple of plays, it takeson a hit -potential sort of feel. Hefty voice over that rumbling rhythm.

* * * *MIKE QUINN: Apple Pie: There's A Time (CBS 4506). This is a very

simple, sing -along piece which suits the dee-jay's voice well enough.The way it builds suggests at least an outside chance of breakingthrough. * * * * *

JULIE DRISCOLL, BRIAN AUGER AND THE TRINITY: Take MeTo The Water; Indian Rope Man (Marmalade 59018). A Record of theWeek, albeit an album track. The slow -moving arrangement, with organand hacking voices, and the most earnest Miss Driscoll. Love it.* * * * *

When did youlast laugh .

THERE are some people who haven't crackeda smile at anything they have heard on the

radio since "Poison Ivy", the Coasters' last bighit in '59. Times are hard, and getting tougher.it seems, and everybody's too sad and hung upto make funny records anymore. Too bad, exceptfor the people who've got "The Coasters' All -TimeGreat Hits", which must have more great rockand roll tracks than any other bargain -price L.P.except a couple of Marble Arch Chuck BerryL.P.'s.

The Coasters are one of those groups whosehistory gets more complicated the more you tryto find out. Bill Millar more or less unravelledtheir story in "Soul Music Monthly, 2": a groupcalled the Robin s,featuring lead singerBoby Nunn, was part ofthe Johnny Otis Showin the early 'fifties, andrecorded with Otis,Little Esther, and othersfor Savoy; Nunn andthe Robins also recordedfor Modern and Crown,and then in '54 beganrecording for SparkRecords, of Los Angeles,a label owned by theirmanager, Lester Sill.who employed JerryLeiber and Mike Stolleras staff writers andproducers.

Leiber and Stoller wrote one of the first jail -rock songs, "Riot In Cell Block Number Nine",and a regional hit in '55, "Smokey Joe's Cafe",whose success encouraged Atlantic to buy up thelabel, re -issue the song on Atco, and then, chang-ing the group's name to the Coasters, have themrecord a very similar song, "Down In Mexico".

ARLO GUTHRIE

YOUNG WHITE AUDIENCESAt this time, the group comprised Billy Guy,

Carl Gardner, Dub Jones and Cornelius Gunter(according to Gunter, who was Bill Millar's sourceof information); and this was the line-up for thegroup during its most successful period. 1957-59.

The humour of the Coasters' records waspeculiar to rock and roll; previously, in rhythmand blues, singers and writers had been able toexploit "suggestive" lyrics, alluding to sex withintricate descriptions of eating food, driving cars.travelling on trains, or, in records like those ofHank Ballard and the Midnighters, dealing moredirectly with the subject in "Work With MeAnnie" and "Sexy Ways". But as Leiber andStoller well knew, radio stations with audiencesof young white kids wouldn't play that kind ofthing, so they came up with more innocent alter-nat'ves, in arrangements which still had muchof the strength of rhythm and blues.

Lead singer Carl Gardner was one of therelatively few rock and roll singers who could

take a very fast tempo and push the rhythm him-self, not depending on the instruments to carryhim along. Leiber and Stoller's material oftenemphasised the sad edge in Gardner's voice whichmade him seem constantly beset by problems,put upon, ignored, derided. But whereas otherproducers would have been glad of one distinc-tive feature to work on, Leiber and Stollerdeveloped other qualities, often breaking the songfor spoken bass lines, and regularly having thegroup come in with rough-and-ready chants whichpaid little attention to the kind of harmoniesother groups had been concentrating on for thepast few years.

"Searchin' "/"Young Blood" was the group'sfirst national hit, in '57, presenting the two kindsof song Leiber and Stoller liked to write for them."Searchin' " (which had Billy Guy singing lead)was entertaining rock and roll dance music atits best, driving rhythm, original words, and rawvocal; "Young Blood" was the comedy piece, kidson a street corner watching the girls go by.

SPEEDED -UP TAPESThe group's next hit, "Yakety Yak" ('58) was

the finest of the many songs which tried toexpress resentment against parents, undoubtedlyoverstating the list of chores which had to bedone before freedom was granted by parents, butstill easy to identify with as well as laugh at.And it had one of the greatest sax breaks KingCurtis ever made, so much energy and excitement.so tightly controlled.

"Charlie Brown", with speeded -up tapes and alot of slow -talking "fool" stuff, was contrived andtasteless - and more successful. "Along CameJones", a parody of T.V. shoot -'em -ups whichdidn't need to exaggerate, and "Poison Ivy", aclever play on words, with a strong beat for '59,were the group's other big hits; in '60 the forma-tion began to fall apart, and the new men couldn'tkeep up the inspired timing and urgent rhythm.There was a temporary revival of quality in '62-63when Earl Carroll joined the group as lead singer.Carroll had been with the Cadillacs, whose"Speedo" was one of the first fast harmonynovelty hits in '56, and one of the best. Carrollmay have been a member of the Coasters-although he certainly wasn't singing lead-whenthey recorded "Little Egypt", which was as goodas their previous hits, one of the best songsLeiber and Stoller ever wrote, describing theantics and eventual fate of a stripper.

The combination of Leiber and Stoller and the Coasterswas curious in that the writers never came up with suchfunny material for anybody else, and the Coasters weren'tmuch good except with Leiber and Stoller material. WhenLeiber and Stoller wrote "Alligator Wine" for Screamin'Jay Hawkins, they seemed content just to list a few phrasesfor him to grunt. But Hawkins, the only rock and rollsinger who could rival the Coasters as a comedy act, wasa hard man to write for. Potentially a good rhythm andblues shouter, he saw the potential in rock and roll forsomething wild and weird-with a beat. Equipping himselfwith a cloak, a skull and a blood -curdling scream, Hawkinsdid all right for himself But he found it difficult to getan impression of his act across on record, apart from oneinfamous recording session at which he is reputed to have

CBShave put an L.P. of his material out here, but the othertracks inevitably fail to rest comfortably beside "Spell".comprising a few attempts to conjure up the impressionof his stage act, several massacres of revered show -tunes(parodies which don't have much point if you don't careone way or the other about "1 Love Paris" in the firstplace), and two tracks which are good rock and roll, "LittleDemon" and "Yellow Coat".

RECENT 'SOPHISTICATION'The recent sophistication in "Rock" music has meant

fewer records which simply present a funny situation withwitty words and a strong musical arrangement; most "funny"records now are either satires or parodies, which depend,like Hawkins' massacres, on the listeners having somefeelings about their subjects. When Frank Zappa's Mothersdig their twisted daggers into the vulnerable parts ofAmerican society-liberals, hippies, self -analytical drop-outs-they assume we're interested. The same is true of most ofthe stuff by the Fugs. One of the few songs which bothersto set out the background before introducing the humouris Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant", which is charming,witty, funny and musical, and has a nice moral, too. Buthe takes nearly twenty minutes to get to the end, whichhe could have cut down with less repetition. The Coasterscould have taught him a thing or two about brevity.

Most of the best records by the Coasters are on the"All Time Greats Hits" (Atlantic Special); so are a coupleof tracks which don't belong there, the group's ownmassacres of "Zing, Went The Strings Of My Heart" and"Sweet Georgia Brown". A second L.P. by the group,"Coast Along With The Cosaters" (Atlantic) has their latermaterial, including "Girls Girls Girls" and a version of"Little Egypt" which isn't as good as the version thatwas on the single. Screamin' Jay Hawkins' L.P. is called"I Put A Spell On You", but the best two tracks, the titleand "Little Demon" are on a 45. ONE disc currently get-ting plenty of airplay

on New York's commer-cial radio stations is theRascals' "Carry Me Back",the group's latest hit overthere. But you will haveto go back quite a way tofind the Rascals' last Brit-ish hit.

"I know `Groovin' wasbig there, wasn't it?," saidFelix. "It's funny, but wehave always feltcoldness from Britain.When we did go there towork we had problemswith permits.

"I think the groupappreciates that Britishrecord buyers might wantto see us perform beforebuying our discs, though."

"But we do hope to getto England for a couple ofdays later this year," re-marked Gene. "I think agroup needs to makeappearances at least twicea year in a country inorder to get hits there.We certainly do this inAmerica, anyway. Wespend most of our week-ends touring and aboutseven or eight days eachmonth recording."

The Riscals are remark-ably well organised -they've been playing to-gether for four -and -a -halfyears and, in their ownwords, "we will sink orswim together."

For the Rascals areone of those "do-it-your-self" groups. "We manageourselves," continuedGene, "we don't want anoutside manager and wedon't really want to doanything through otherpeople."

"The group is con-stantly striving for betterquality and we would liketo see all singles issuedin stereo - that wouldreally be great."

Love Affair to doa Led Zeppelin!?!WE'RE

PLANNING two new albums now. One willfeature all Phillip Goodhand-Tait numbers. We'll be

using the usual bass guitar, drums and piano, but we'redeciding whether to use a melotron. Morgan is good onmelotron, he's played a few sessions for the Gun. We wantto get away from the tag of using session men."

Steve Ellis talking about the musical plans for Love Affair.Thinking it might be a change, I approached Steve on thissubject, and he welcomed the opportunity to talk

"The second album will consist more of heavy numbers."Steve continued. "It sounds pathetic when you think of LoveAffair, but we're going to do something like Led Zeppelin.It will be us: what we really are."

Does this mean Steve is unhappy working with LoveAffair as they are at the moment?

"No, we're not unhappy on stage at all," Steve replied."There are two sides to us. The one when we are all smilingat each other on telly, and the other side when we are onstage. I like to let myself go. Recently we did cabaret fora week at the Dolce Vita, Newcastle, and Titos, Stockton.The people were really nice to us, but we got so bored beingin the same places every night. Straight after that we dida gig at Preston Top Rank. We were so pleased to get backto a ballroom we over -ran and played for an hour -and -a -half!

CHOSE IT FOR OURSELVES

"We'll probably go into cabaret every six months," Steveadded. "I don't think we really need to do it, but our man-ager thinks it's best, and I trust his judgement."

Steve is also perfectly happy to leave the choice of singlereleases to his manager, John Cokell.

"Our manager usually picks our records," Steve explained."but we wanted to choose for ourselves. When it came to'One Road' we wanted to put that out, but John said weshouldn't. Anyway, he let us have our way just that once,though he warned us. All our other singles have reachedthe top five, but 'One Road' only got to number sixteen!"

Although Love Affair's next single is expected to be aPhillip Goodhand-Tait number, Steve himself has recentlybeen composing along with the 16 -year -old wonder fromThunderclap Newman, Jimmy MaCullough.

"I started writing with Jimmy a few weeks ago," Stevetold me. "We've finished a couple of numbers and they are

both completely different. One is kind of Trafficky, and theother is rather like Fairport Convention. I think they'regreat. I'd like to do some of that kind of harmony. Thething about this band, though, is from the beginning wewere thrown in the deep end, but everybody plays muchbetter now and we're capable of better things.

"Thunderclap Newman might be using some of the thingsthat Jimmy and I write, but it depends on whether PeteTownshend likes them," Steve added, looking slightly unsureof his own suggestion. "He's so talented, I feel embarrassedeven to give him the tapes. For me he's the ace pop writer,he does more for me than Paul McCartney.

"Do you know," Steve added. "I've got two weeks holidaycoming up, and that will be the first holiday for four years.I'm going to stay at Roger Daltrey's cottage in Berkshire,it's great to relax down there."
