What is bullying?

• It is a phenomenon of juvenile delinquency, appearing in many countries of the world.

• Bullying is not the same as conflict between people (like having a fight) or disliking someone, even though people might bully each other because of conflict or dislike.

• It refers to violence between students or peers in order to cause pain or distress.

• Bullying is when people repeatedly and intentionally use words or actions against someone or a group of people to cause distress and risk to their wellbeing. People who do it usually have more influence or power over someone else, or want to make someone else feel less powerful or helpless.

MYTH: “Bullying? What bullying? We were just fooling around…”

REALITY: Only friends can fool around, and fooling around doesn’t include physical or emotional pain. Bullying, on the other hand, involves young people who are not friends with each other and it creates negative feelings such as pain, fear, anger or shame.

So, bullying is not fooling around or a joke.

Types of bullying

Physical: one of the most common forms of bulling between children, especially little children.Verbal: words hurt, but the scars on the soul don’t show.Threat/coercion: one of the most dangerous forms and very hard to identify.Snatching/destruction of possessions: the aim is not to cause harm to the victim, but to degrade his/her things.Racial: the victim’s diversity is targeted, aiming at stigmatising him/her.Sexual: the bully’s aim is to cause the victim to feel shame and intense embarrassment.Social isolation: Neuroimaging studies have shown that the brain reacts to social isolation in the same way as to physical pain.

Bullying can have a negative impact on everyone – it is not just a problem for victims and bullies. If you see or know of others been bullied you may feel angry, fearful, guilty, and sad. You may also feel worried that the bullying could happen to you.

On the level of the individual, bullying makes you feel:

• guilty, feeling like it is yours fault

• confused and stressed out, wondering what to do and why this is happening to you

• hopeless and stuck, like you can’t get out of the situation

• alone, like there is no one to help you

• unwanted or unlinked, like you don’t fit in with the cool group

• depressed and rejected by your friends and other groups of people

• unsafe and afraid

• ashamed that this is happening to you

When bullying isn’t stopped or challenged by anyone it can create an environment where bullying is accepted and where everyone feels powerless to stop it.

How can bullying affect you and others?

Why do people bully others? Those who bully persistently are likely to do so in order to:

• dominate others

• improve their social status.

They may have high self-esteem, show little regret for their bullying behaviour and not see bullying as wrong.

Other people may bully:

• out of anger or frustration

• because they struggle socially

• because they have been victims of bullying themselves.

It's not possible to avoid all conflict. Conflicts will happen - it's inevitable - and even though it may make you uncomfortable, you can learn how to deal with it. The goal is not to avoid conflict, but to learn how to handle the conflict competently while treating yourself and the other person with dignity.

Know your rights. You have a right to feel safe and to be treated fairly and respectfully. Bullying is a serious problem with serious mental and physical impacts.

If you know or see someone who is being bullied, find out how to stop bullying.

If you are being bullied, you should talk to someone you know well and trust; they will give you much needed support and will often have suggestions you hadn't considered for helping with the situation.

If you are being bullied while at school, it is a good idea to seek help from a friend, or to talk to a teacher or counsellor to see if they can help.

If you feel safe and confident, you should approach the person who is bullying you and tell them that their behaviour is unwanted and you won’t put up with it.

What can you do to stop bullies?

Parents shouldn't have to fear sending their children to school. Students shouldn't be afraid to go to school. Bullying is a phenomenon that should not be tolerated.

We need to understand the issue of bullying more deeply. We need to learn about what the world's best research is telling us. We need to be aware of practical approaches, policies, programs and resources that are effective.

Bullying is often the number one non-academic issue that many educators face. Teachers should be informed about the causes and effects of bullying, its various forms and the ways they can help. Students need to know that if they do not have support at home, they at least have support at school.

Bullying is a universal issue that touches almost every person, family, school, business or community at one time or another regardless of age, gender, race, religion or socio-economic status. Bullying is not only a “school” issue, bullying is a broader community health and wellness issue. The effects of bullying can last a lifetime.

The good news is that prevention of bullying through education and awareness IS POSSIBLE and that all of us can play a role: students, parents, teachers, headmasters, policy-makers.
