Practice processPlay evaluate practice Combine

• The goal is accura-cy, even if you have to play really slow.

• Tackle the difficult part(s) first.

• Start with a small section of the music; 1 or 2 measures.

• Keep your eyes moving forward!

• Use a practice strategy to help fix mistakes.

• Use a practice strategy to build muscle memory through repetition.

• Practice Strategies:

• Play all the measures you’ve worked on so far.

• How does it sound? Accurate? Perfect? Go PLAY.

• How does it sound? Needs work? Go PRACTICE.

• Are there specifics you need to work on? • steady beat? • rhythms? • letters? • fingering?

• Is there anything you can write down that will help you?

• Play it accurately at 3 different tempos: Slow, medium, and fast. • Play it accurately, memorized. • Play it accurately with your eyes closed. • Play it 3 times perfectly in a row.

• Once you’ve conquered a strategy, play it one more time to make sure you really have it! Make sure it’s accurate!

• If nothing is helping, move on to another small section, and come back to it later.

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany. As a young boy, he learned to play the violin and piano, and soon became a traveling per-former. In his early twenties, he moved to Vienna, Austria to study music, where he eventually spent the rest of his life.

Beethoven was a brilliant pianist and a talented composer. However, by the time he was 30, his increasing deafness almost put an end to his career. Against all odds, he continued to compose music. It was during these difficult years that Beethoven wrote some of his greatest composi-tions, including his 9th Symphony.

Beethoven has influenced every generation of composers through his 722 large and small compositions. His best known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets.
