The Manly Art of Poetry

JIM HALL

RECORDING RECORDING

I never met this fellow

before/he smiled so much

it made me dizzy/then before

he told me what he'd come to

talk about he asked if he

could record my voice our

conversation/that he liked to

go back over certain events

and listen between the lines

for words our bodies mumbled

or something of that sort/1

said flatly no/1 don't want

this moment to be anymore

sacred than it has to be/

but he said well if that's

the way you feel about it

but I don't plan to use it

against you or anything I

just like to re-examine

certain moments/it's like

photography/he kept smiling and he had very long clean

hair and he was so gentle

and at peace and correct/

and he didn't mind eye contact

so I felt like a bastard

refusing him his hobby/ and

I said O.K. go ahead turn it

on but I don't approve of this/

it stunts your memory/he turned

it on and we sat and watched it

go around for a minute/then

he asked me a question about

writing poetry
