pion Indiana 1-0 at Alumi Field inSeptember. The Irish also defeated fiveranked teams on their way to the NCAASweet 16 - a run which ended with a tough1-1 tie to Michigan (the Wolverinesadvanced 4-3 on penalty kicks). Notre Damealso had the unique distinction of defeatingboth teams who appeared in the NCAAChampionship final (St. John’s, Indiana)during the 2003 season.

The ‘03 campaign has beenthe highlight of the Clark Eraat Notre Dame, but his firsttwo years with the Irish pro-vided a number of memorablemoments as well.

In his inaugural season,Clark inherited a team thathad experienced a great tran-sitional period with threecoaches in an 18-month span.As the ’01 BIG EAST Coach ofthe Year, Clark engineered agreat turnaround as the Irisheclipsed their conference sin-gle-season season-win totalof the previous year by threegames. Notre Dame’s 7-3 con-ference mark was goodenough for a second-place tiein the final regular-seasonstandings with St. John’s. Thatmarked the best finish andmost wins by a Notre Dameteam since becoming a con-ference member in 1995.

Clark’s first season saw the Irish registerkey victories, but none more thrilling thanan upset of sixth-ranked Indiana 1-0 inBloomington. The win was just the secondever for Notre Dame in a series that hadspanned 22 games.

Clark took over for Chris Apple, who hadspent one year (2000) as head coach follow-ing four seasons as an assistant. Apple suc-ceeded the late Mike Berticelli who died

Bobby Clark’s reputation in thecollegiate soccer world is of a coachknown for turning programs aroundand making them into national con-tenders. Prior to his arrival to Notre

Dame in January of 2001, Clark experiencedgreat success at both Dartmouth andStanford as he transformed both of thoseschools into perennial soccer powers.

In just three seasons along the Irish side-lines, Clark has worked his magic andsteadily built a solid foundation within theNotre Dame program. Leading the Irish tothree consecutive NCAA appearances inhis first three years, Clark has establishedNotre Dame as one of the elite programs inthe nation. Notre Dame played host to a firstround NCAA tournament contest in 2002and posted a 3-1 victory over Akron. TheIrish improved one step further in 2003,defeating UW-Milwaukee in NCAA secondround action at Alumni Field and hosting aSweet 16 game for the first time in the pro-gram’s history.

The 2003 season was also a memorableone in terms of BIG EAST Conferenceaccomplishments. Notre Dame finishedthird in the regular season conferencestandings, then swept through the leaguetournament with three consecutiveshutouts. The Irish defeated Connecticut 2-0at home, eliminated Providence 1-0 in thesemifinals (in Storrs, Conn.) and claimedthe BIG EAST Championship with a 2-0 vic-tory over #4 St. John’s (the eventual NCAArunner up).

Earning a championship in arguably thetoughest conference in the country broughtthe Irish a number of major individualawards. Clark was named the regionalcoach of the year, while junior goalkeeperChris Sawyer earned first-team All-America honors and two major conferenceawards (BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year,BIG EAST Championship MostOutstanding Player). Senior Justin Detteralso earned All-America honors, joiningjuniors Jack Stewart and Kevin Goldthwaiteon the all-regional team.

Notre Dame earned its highest-ever rank-ing in 2003, peaking at third in both(NSCAA/adidas and Soccer America) aftertheir BIG EAST Championship - that marksthe second-straight season the Irish havebeen ranked in the top five of a national poll(Notre Dame appeared at fifth duringSeptember of 2002).

The 2003 season was highlighted by ahome victory over eventual national cham-

In seven seasons, Rich Hunter’s Irish averaged nearly 18 victories each year and never won fewer than 16games.

Sami Kahale finished his Irish career with 35 goals and 30 assists whileplaying in 74 games from 1978-81.

suddenly in January of 2000 of a heart attackfollowing 10 successful campaigns at theIrish helm.

During Berticelli’s 10-year coachingtenure, his teams won 104 games (his 100thwin occurred at Notre Dame in ’99 when hisIrish squad defeated Eastern Michigan onSept. 29) and garnered three conferencetournament championships while earningNCAA tournament berths in 1993, ’94 and’96.

Berticelli helped usher in a new era inNotre Dame athletics in 1995-96 when Irishteams began competing in one of thenation’s most prestigious conferences - theBIG EAST.

Founded in 1979 primarily as a men’s bas-ketball conference, the BIG EAST has growntoday into one of the country’s most diversi-fied leagues.

In 1995, the Notre Dame men’s soccerteam left its Midwestern CollegiateConference roots after seven years and twostraight MCC tournament crowns to facethe challenges of the competitive BIG EASTConference. And while the Irish experi-enced growing pains in their first year as aleague member, they could call themselvesBIG EAST champions following the 1996campaign.

The ’96 season, which marked the 20thyear of varsity soccer at Notre Dame, proved

to be one of the most success-ful in school history. In win-ning the BIG EASTChampionship title, the Irishearned the conference’s auto-matic berth into the 32-teamNCAA field. Making theirthird appearance in fouryears, the Irish, 0-3 in previ-ous NCAA contests, won theirfirst-ever tournament gamewith a 1-0 shutout at second-ranked UNC-Greensboro.

A heartbreaking 1-0 defeatto eventual NCAA semifinal-ist UNC-Charlotte in the final24 seconds of the contestcould not dampen the suc-cess Notre Dame enjoyed thatseason.

Men’s soccer became anofficial sport at Notre Dame inthe fall of 1977 as the onceclub sport was elevated tovarsity status following thegrowing interest and popu-larization of soccer in theUnited States in the mid-’70s.

Nearly 200 upperclassmen andfreshmen turned out for tryoutsthat first year. Head coach RichHunter assembled a team with noscholarships and a starting lineupcomprised of 10 underclassmen.Notre Dame ended up 16-1-1 in itsinaugural season after tying andlosing its first two games. Wins overPurdue, Michigan and Xavier highlightedthe 16-game win streak during the cam-paign.

The Irish finished with a 21-3-1 record andwere a perfect 14-0 at home in their secondseason. Kevin Lovejoy, who went on tobecome Notre Dame’s all-time leadingscorer (a mark which still stands today), net-ted 29 goals (still a Notre Dame single-sea-son record) in 1978. A 26-game win skeindating back to the 1977 campaign washalted by a 2-1 loss to Goshen.

Hunter’s squads in 1979 and 1980 won 20games for the second and third straightyears as the Irish finished 20-10-1 and 20-7,respectively. The Notre Dame schedule in1979 included two ranked opponents,Loyola (Maryland) and Indiana. The Irishbattled the eighth-ranked Greyhounds to a2-2 tie at home. Lovejoy led Notre Dame inscoring both seasons as he closed out histhree-year career with 67 goals and 19assists. Notre Dame’s only loss at home in1980 was a 2-1 decision to Miami of Ohio.

The Irish nearly missed out on an NCAAbid in 1981, but the season demonstratedthe progress the program had made in itsbrief five-year existence. Notre Damestunned the soccer world with a 4-3 over-time win at home against top-ranked St.Louis, and finished with a 16-3-3 record.Forward Sami Kahale became the secondplayer in Irish soccer history to reach the100-point mark as he finished out his careerwith 35 goals and 30 assists.

After starting off slowly during the 1982campaign, the Irish finished the year with a16-4-1 mark. Over the final 15 games of theseason, Notre Dame went 12-2-1 andoutscored its opponents 59-16. ForwardMario Manta led the Irish with 16 goals andeight assists and concluded his career thirdon the all-time scoring list with 36 goals and18 assists.

The 1983 campaign marked Hunter’s finalseason at the helm after seven years.During his tenure, he guided the Irish to a128-32-8 mark for a .786 winning percentage.Notre Dame finished the season with an 18-4 mark after suffering its first-ever season-opening loss. The Irish were 11-1 at homeand concluded the season by winning 11 oftheir last 13 contests.

Bruce McCourt led the Irish in scoring during both the 1986 and 1987campaigns.

As a freshman, Bill Lanza scored a school-record five goals against DePaul in 1993.

one more year for the school’s first-everberth.

The 1988 season produced another 17-win campaign for the Irish as Notre Damefinished with a 17-4-2 mark and made theschool’s first-ever appearance in theNCAA tournament. Notre Dame, in its firstyear as a member of the MidwesternCollegiate Conference, locked up an at-large berth by winning the MCC tourna-ment crown and finished 15th in the finalIntercollegiate Soccer Association ofAmerica ranking.

Nine starters and five reserves from theprevious season plus a talented freshmanclass helped Notre Dame win the MCCtitle with back-to-back wins over third-ranked St. Louis (2-0) and fourth-rankedEvansville (2-0) in the semifinal and finalof the conference championship. NotreDame jumped out to a 9-0-2 record to startthe season, highlighted by a 1-1 tie witheventual national champion Indiana. TheIrish faced 11th-ranked SMU in Dallas intheir first NCAA appearance and fell vic-tim to the Mustangs, 2-0.

The season also produced the school’sfirst All-American. Forward Randy Morrisgarnered third-team All-America honorsas he led the Irish in scoring with 14 goalsand 12 assists (40 points) to finish 11thnationally in that category. He garneredMCC MVP honors in the tournament afterleading the Irish to three shutouts en routeto the conference title.

With the graduation of Morris in 1988, theIrish struggled somewhat during the 1989campaign while posting a 10-7-3 record.Notre Dame was led by a young group ofplayers. Freshman forward KevinPendergast, who would also become theplacekicker for the Notre Dame football teamduring his career, led the Irish with 12 goalsand five assists during his rookie season. The school’s 200th victory came onSeptember 22 when Notre Dame defeatedMichigan State at home, 4-2. The Irish sea-son ended with a 2-1 loss to St. Louis in thesemifinals of the MCC championship. Thecampaign also marked the final for Grace asthe Irish head coach. During his six seasons, his teams won 64.8 percent of their games, while posting a 76-38-14 ledger.

Enter Berticelli, who was hired as NotreDame’s third soccer coach. He had ledUNC-Greensboro to national champi-onship crowns in 1982 and 1983 and latercoached for six seasons at Old Dominion.

After humble beginnings in 1990,Berticelli guided the Irish to back-to-backMCC tournament crowns in 1993 and 1994and two straight NCAA tournamentappearances. Under him, Notre Dameattained status among the nation’s topprograms.

After a 4-11-3 mark in his first season,Berticelli piloted the Irish to four straightseasons of 10 or more victories. In 1991, hebrought in a talented freshman class of 13.Nine of those players were starters by sea-son’s end as the Irish finished with a 13-5-2 record. Notre Dame tied nationally-ranked Evansville and lost to third-rankedIndiana in overtime during the season.

Dennis Grace ushered in a newera in 1984 as he took over just oneweek prior to the start of the seasonfollowing the resignation of Hunter.Grace, who had been named anassistant in July, inherited a programthat had lost 11 players to gradua-tion. The Irish finished 12-6-2, theirfewest wins since the program’s

inception. Rich Herdegen led Notre Dame inscoring for the second straight year as henetted 16 goals and dished off two assists. His 57 goals and 23 assists (137 points) stilltoday place him second all-time on thecareer Irish scoring list.

The 1985 season marked the first non-winning season in the program’s historyas the Irish tackled an extremely toughschedule. Grace’s squad opened up withtwo tough road games at Virginia and atGeorge Mason. The Irish dropped a 3-0decision to the Cavaliers and were beaten4-2 by the Patriots. Notre Dame concludedthe regular season with three straightwins.

In Grace’s third season, the Irishrebounded to post a 13-7-2 mark in 1986.Highlighting the season was a 2-1 over-time win for the Irish on the road atConnecticut in a game which was seen inthe New England area on New EnglandSports Network. Sophomore Pat Murphyprovided the game-winning tally with justsix minutes remaining in the overtimesession. The win snapped the Huskies’ 18-game regular season non-losing streak ontheir home field and marked Connecticut’sfirst home loss in nearly two years.Forward Bruce McCourt ranked amongthe top 10 nationally in scoring as he fin-ished the year with 16 goals and sixassists (38 points).

The 1987 season witnessed severalNotre Dame milestones as the Irish beganthe season with a 14-0-1 record, their beststart in the program’s 11-year history.Notre Dame had a new home in the 5,000-seat Moose Krause Stadium facility andthe Irish also earned the school’s first-evertop-20 ranking. The string of victories washighlighted by the school’s first win overIndiana, 4-3, in overtime at Notre Dame.

At one point during that season, theIrish were one of just three unbeatenDivision I teams in the country. Grace’ssquad suffered its first loss of the seasonwhen it traveled to Portland. The ninth-ranked Pilots handed the Irish their first ofthree straight road setbacks, 3-1.

Notre Dame would also lose to UCLA, 3-2, and San Diego State, 1-0. Hoping to getan at-large bid into the NCAA tournament,Grace and his squad would have to wait Notre Dame players celebrate after Ryan Turner’s

goal in the first round upset of second-ranked UNC-Greensboro in the ’96 NCAA Tournament.

The Irishopened the campaign with one-goal lossesto UCLA and eventual semifinalist Duke.Notre Dame missed out on a chance at anNCAA bid when the Irish were defeated byEvansville, 3-2, in the semifinal of the MCCchampionship.

Three years of top-notch recruitingclasses resulted in consecutive NCAAappearances in both ’93 and ’94. For a four-year stretch from ’91-’94, Notre Dame aver-aged 12.5 wins per season in winning 50games and captured two conferencecrowns. Led in 1993 by Bill Lanza, the MCCplayer of the year, the Irish registered theirmost wins since 1988 in posting a 15-6 mark.

crown as the Irish shut out La Salle, Butlerand Detroit in the conference championshipand earned a berth in the NCAA tourna-ment. Berticelli’s squad faced Wisconsin inMadison and dropped a 3-1 decision to theBadgers.

Notre Dame’s second consecutive NCAAappearance did not prove easy in 1994. TheIrish battled injuries and a tough scheduleto finish with a 12-10-2 mark. After strug-gling for most of the season, the Irish cameback to win the MCC tournament with adramatic 3-2 double-overtime win overWisconsin-Milwaukee and then beat Mid-Continent Conference champion CentralConnecticut 1-0 in another double overtimethriller to earn an automatic bid into thetournament. The Irish met eventual nationalrunner-up Indiana in Bloomington for thesecond time during the season. After drop-ping a 2-0 decision earlier in the year, NotreDame put a scare into the Hoosiers whoescaped with a controversial 1-0 win inovertime.

The 1995 season proved to be somewhatof a rebuilding year for the Irish as NotreDame struggled to a 9-10 overall record and4-7 mark in its first season as a member ofthe BIG EAST.

Notre Dame’s second year as a member ofthe BIG EAST proved to be a season ofredemption for the Irish program. Berticelli’ssquad silenced the critics in winning theBIG EAST crown after finishing third in thefinal regular-season standings with a 6-3-2record. Notre Dame posted a 14-7-2 recordoverall, the second most victories inBerticelli’s 10-year tenure.

The ’96 Irish squad defined perseverance. After losing its best defensive player, seniorBrian Engesser, to a career-ending injuryeight games into the season, Notre Damemaintained its poise and composure.Despite losing four of its final five regular-season contests, Notre Dame responded tothe challenge by winning three straightgames to earn the title BIG EAST champion.Drama prevailed in three-straight one-goaldecisions.

Despite being out-shot 24-9 in the contest, Notre Damereceived a strong game from sophomoregoalkeeper Greg Velho, who was namedMost Outstanding Player of the tournament,as he came up with 10 saves.

Notre Dame earned the BIG EAST crownthe next day with a 1-0 victory over 12th-

In four of Notre Dame’s five seasons in theBIG EAST under Berticelli, his squadsearned a spot in the league’s eight-teamfield. In 1997, the Irish advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Seton Hall 2-0 in aquarterfinal matchup in South Orange, N.J.The win avenged a 2-1 setback to the fourth-seeded Pirates during the regular season.Notre Dame, seeded fifth, was eliminatedfrom the tournament in its semifinal contestby top-seeded St. John’s 4-1. Berticelli’s teamfinished with a 10-9-2 record, which markedthe sixth time in seven seasons that hissquad ended the campaign with 10 or morewins.

Berticelli’s team clinched a tour-nament berth in the regular-season finaleagainst West Virginia at home in ’98 as theIrish beat the Mountaineers 2-0 and markedthe 300th win in the 22-year history of theprogram.

That campaign produced a first for NotreDame since joining the league in 1995 asthree Irish played garnered all-conferencehonors. Senior Greg Velho, who finished uphis career as the school’s all-time savesleader with 311, garnered second-team all-conference honors as did junior defenderMatt McNew and freshman forward ShaneWalton. Walton, a three-time BIG EASTRookie-of-the-Week honoree who led theIrish in scoring with 10 goals and sevenassists, also was one of three freshmen inthe league to earn a spot on the league’s twoall-conference teams (Walton eventuallymoved on the Notre Dame football team andearned All-America honors as a cornerback).
