From the Director

As those long summer days become shorter and the temperature begins to drop, the City’s beautiful parks, beaches, and facilities will begin to transition into the fall season. Although the weather will change, the Recreation Department will follow the tradition of providing the most exciting classes, activities, and programs our community members of all ages can enjoy.

With the rise in the popularity of scooters nation-wide, the Coronado Skatepark now allows non-motorized scooters to “flow” alongside skateboarders and rollerbladers. In addition, Sunset Park received a facelift consisting of new turf, sidewalk, and the addition of a drinking fountain. Speaking of turf, the Coronado Golf Course has just welcomed its new restaurant concessionaire, Feast & Fareway, to the list of exceptional restaurants to enjoy in Coronado.

The City’s Aquatics Center recently added two new pieces of fitness equipment to its programs and classes—the Hyrdro Rider and the Tsunami Board; both are guaranteed to increase your balance, cardiovascular health and level of fun!

The upcoming holiday season is both exciting and demanding, and we at the Recreation Department want to provide every opportunity for you and your loved ones to “Put Some Play in Your Day”!

SCHOLARSHIPS Program Scholarships are available to Coronado’s youth. We offer one scholarship, per child, of the fee of one program up to $50 maximum. This includes your choice of a class per brochure if funds are available. An application is available at the Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. Also, if you would like to help create an opportunity for a child to participate in a recreation program, contact the Recreation office at 522-7342 or by e-mail at [email protected] to inquire about making a donation.

PARKS MAKE LIFE BETTERThe City of Coronado, along with the California Parks and Recreation Society’s “Parks Make Life Better” logo, reminds us that parks and recreation make lives and communities better now and in the future. Parks give us access to serenity and to the inspiration of nature. They give us outdoor space to play and exercise. They are the best facilities for self-directed and organized recreation. In short, parks and recreation services make lives better for everyone in Coronado.

CHARACTER COUNTSThe City of Coronado, the Coronado Unified School District and the Coronado Chamber of Commerce have teamed up for the Character Counts initiative to empower individuals to make positive choices. The thrust of the program is simple...include the six character traits in our community language – Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Adopted by communities and organizations throughout the United States, the Coronado Human Relations Commission has brought “Character Counts” to Coronado knowing that the well-being of our society requires all of us to be involved and to do the right thing even when no one is looking.

“LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE…RECREATE!”The “Live A Healthy Life…Recreate” logo identifies programs and activities that provide a health and wellness benefit to the participant. Throughout San Diego County, parks and recreation agencies have joined together in a campaign to create healthy communities and provide opportunities for residents to be physically active. The most common benefit of participation in a recreation program, class, or camp is derived from aerobic exercise. Look for the “Live A Healthy Life…Recreate” logo to find heart healthy programs for you and your family to participate in at the Coronado Community Center.
