R Fall L ECREATION & EISURE Chuck Wallace, 73 and a 9th degree black belt, teaches beginner and intermediate Isshinryu Karate (One Heart Method) for the Bethel Park Recreation Department on Monday evenings from 6:15–7 p.m. (beginner) and 7:15-8 p.m. (intermediate) (see page 25 or 35). “Kids get so much out of it,” said Wallace. “They gain self-confidence, physical fitness and they get structure…children like to know what their limits are and what’s expected of them.” Wallace knows a lot about gaining confidence. As a 10 year old back in 1950, Wallace developed spino-bulbar polio. “A polio vaccine wasn’t developed until 1956, so in 1950 there was no way to control it,” said Wallace. “And, the type of polio I had in those days killed 7 out of 10 children and crippled the other three. I spent a month at “Municipal Hospital” in Pittsburgh where I almost died…but I made it and they released me to come home with a physical therapist and a visiting nurse paid for by the March of Dimes.” After spending six months “flat on his back,” Wallace had to learn to walk again…and as a result, he was behind the norm growing up taking years to build back his strength. “I was frustrated that I couldn’t play sports so that gave me the desire to achieve in a sport or discipline and laid the groundwork for karate to become my interest,” he said. So, at age 23, he heard about a karate master who came to the South Hills to teach Isshinryu karate in Castle Shannon. “I signed up and studied under the founder of the Isshinryu system and met the man who was going to become my lifetime instructor and friend – William H. Duessel, now 86 who received his 10th degree black belt. In 1970, we opened our own training hall (Dojo) in Pittsburgh that became the largest school on the Eastern seaboard with 500 students,” said Wallace. While Wallace originally thought himself to be unlucky having contracted polio, he now thinks otherwise. “Karate helped build me back up physically…I was lucky that I made a full recovery and wasn’t crippled. Polio is what drove me to seek out and ultimately find karate and in a way, it was a blessing in disguise,” added Wallace. And, karate has kept him in shape his whole adult life. “I weigh today what I was when I was married in 1960 and I’ve stayed trim and fit and have maintained good health…I attribute it to my karate training all these years,” said Wallace. “And, around 1990, it was discovered that some of the people who had polio 35-40 years ago got post- polio syndrome and I was fortunate not to get this. People who recovered found themselves in wheelchairs or crutches 35 – 40 years later…but, it didn’t happen to me. I think practicing karate all these years has kept me strong; karate was my way of coping with polio.” And, Wallace’s enthusiasm for karate hasn’t lessened a bit over the years. “I’m looking forward to old age to see how I can preserve my skills and, so far they haven’t diminished…my kicks and punches and chops and elbow strikes are even more powerful because of the improved technique and the development of the art,” he said. Most recently Wallace received his 9th degree black belt from the IWKA (Isshinryu World Karate Association); his certificate was issued from Okanawa Japan. In most styles of karate, there are 10 degrees of black belts with 1 as the lowest and 10 as the highest. With over 40,000 members world-wide, the IWKA has only two 9th degree black belts, and Wallace is now one of them. According to Wallace, there’s generally only one 10th degree black belt per karate style and that’s usually the person who’s the head of it. And, in July, Wallace had more good news when he was one of seven individuals (out of 200 applicants) inducted into the Isshinryu Karate Hall of Fame in Gatlinberg,Tenn. Along with teaching at Bethel Park for the past four years, he’s also been involved for many years in the Isshinryu Karate Academy of Pittsburgh in Greentree. There, he’s one of the senior members and one of the highest ranked black belts teaching every other Tuesday and working with black belts individually at the school. “I’ve been active in karate for 49 years and it’s been my passion,” said Wallace. “This has been amazing summer!” Wallace has been a Bethel Park resident since 1967.
