The interest for my topic came because I am passionate about recycling.
Topic: My Graduation Project paper was on the costs and benefits of having a recycling program in all schools of North Carolina.
Driving Question: What are the benefits and costs of having a recycling program in North Carolina schools?
Thesis Statement: If North Carolina created a law that required every grade school in North Carolina to have a recycling program the benefits would outweigh the costs.
Conclusion:The benefits of
recycling outweigh the costs significantly.
There are 115 school
systems in North Carolina and out of that 115, 110 recycle.
A school can save 68% on their budget if it recycled items instead of throwing them away. Do not have to pay tipping fee.
In North Carolina, 14,000 employees work in the recycling industry.
When one ton of paper is recycled, it saves 17 trees.
I created a brochure, a board game, a jeopardy game, and a recycling basketball game based on the brochure.
I taught the items in my brochure to a fifth grade class at Creekside Elementary School.
I also video taped the children playing the basket ball game, the board game, and creating the brochure.
I did my product by using the resources that I had and some resources that I was given. I used a computer to create the brochure, the jeopardy game, and warm-up questions.
I did my product a few hours a day after school for four days. I also worked on my product during my seminar times in school. I started on it on a Monday and taught the class that Friday.
The connection between my paper and my product is that they both relate to the topic of recycling in schools and educating children about the benefits.
My mentor, Bobbi Waters, helped a lot with completing my product and creating a wonderful presentation to present to the children.
Coach Barr helped me a lot with answering questions and reviewing mypaper. He also helped me prepare to teach to the fifth grade class.
Successes: Followed timeline
well Got paper and
product done Asked a lot of
questions My wikispace
Challenges: Managing time Procrastinating Finding sources that
were reliable

I hope to be able to apply this to any science classes I might have in college.
I was also hoping to possibly set up a recycling program in at least one North Carolina school in the near future.
This is not a path I want to take as a career, but it is a topic I am passionate about.
