RED CAPS GOLF MARCH MONTHLY REPORT Also on the website www.redcapsgolf.com ActivitiesPresidents Piece for March 2020 Never in my worst nightmare would I believe that I could be sending out an email saying that our golf course has closed, for TWO WEEKS! And no-one knows whats going to happen aſter that. No doubt therell dying up in the garden, garage, throwing out stuff we havent used for 5, 10 years or more; painng, pulling out weeds, maybe even polishing the car. Whatever, finding stuff to do will be crical in this me to while away the hours. Pae and I are keeping up a roune which includes walking the brown dog (for exercise), working around the house, painng the outside trims and I have a project to restore a canoe which one of my neigh- bors put out on the nature strip a couple of weeks ago. It ll be ideal for our 10, 7, 5 and eventually 2 year old grand- kids, supervised by all the adults around, of course. I love the idea of kids who are able to swim, mucking around in small boats; it gives them great confidence and teaches new skills and respect for water, while having a huge amount of FUN. More and more people are sending around videos of how to deal with the coronavirus, ranging from cute, funny, hi- larious and downright rude. We all deal with this stuff in different ways. Maroondah Council have tabled a report aris- ing from the public survey conducted from November 10 2019 to February 26, 2020. The report is couched in typical officious gobbledygook language which leaves one wondering what is going to happen next. Coronavirus has thrown in a whole new curve ball to any sensible discussion. Your club is represented on a group of Friends of Ringwood Golf Course comprised of the larger user groups, to keep the fight up to Council, ensuring that our beauful, heavily u- lized council facility, is leſt as it is. Our Rich River trip is of course cancelled for this year so the tradional poec contribuon has been released now, available on the Achievements page of our website under Ode to Bruce”. Our Welfare Officer Jim will be available for a chat, as will any of your mates as we keep the spirit of Red Caps alive and well, in ancipaon of our return to the course when this is all over. President’s Piece for March 2020 Never in my worst nightmare would I believe that I could be sending out an email saying that our golf course has closed, for TWO WEEKS! And no-one knows what’s going to happen after that. No doubt there’ll tidying up in the garden, garage, throwing out stuff we haven’t used for 5, 10 years or more; painting, pulling out weeds, maybe even polishing the car. Did you know: Why does a golf course have 18 holes? In the beginning, there was St. Andrews. And this old course that is most appropriately named THE Old Course had 18 holes. Well, near the beginning it had 18 holes, that is. And eventually, other courses were copycats. Those are the broad strokes of how a typical golf course came to have 18 holes. Sadly, the number has nothing to do with how many shots are in a bottle of Scotch—though that makes for a much more fun story. The Original Rules of Golf fit on one (big) page? Of course, the rules weren't always this maddening. In fact, they were actually so incredibly simple that they fit on one page. OK, so it was one really big page with that old-school script writing since they were created in 1744 (!!). That's right, 276 years ago this month the Original Rules of Golf were drafted by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, who sought out to create a set of rules for the world's first "open" golf competition. According to scottishgolfhistory.com, they were drawn up at the behest of the City of Edinburgh Council, who agreed to present the Silver Golf Club prize to the winner of the competition as long as there was a written set of rules. That original set included just 13 rules, as opposed to the 24 there are today, each with their own subset of rules. The Original Rules of Golf as they were originally written are as follows: 1.) You must Tee your Ball within a Club's length of the Hole. 2.) Your Tee must be upon the Ground. 3.) You are not to change the Ball which you Strike off the Tee. 4.) You are not to remove Stones, Bones or any Break Club, for the sake of playing your Ball, except upon the fair Green within a Club's length of your Ball. 5.) If your Ball comes among watter, or any wattery filth, you are at liberty to take out your Ball & bringing it behind the hazard and Teeing it, you may play it with any Club and allow your Adversary a Stroke for so getting out your Ball. 6.) If your Balls be found any where touching one another, You are to lift the first Ball, till you play the last. 7.) At Holling, you are to play your Ball honestly for the Hole, and not to play upon your Adversary’s Ball, not lying in your way to the Hole. 8.) If you should lose your Ball, by its being taken up, or any other way, you are to go back to the Spot, where you struck last, & drop another Ball, And allow your adversary a Stroke for the misfortune. 9.) No man at Holling his Ball, is to be allowed, to mark his way to the Hole with his Club, or anything else. 10.) If a Ball be stopp’d by any Person, Horse, Dog or anything else, The Ball so stop’d must be play’d where it lyes. 11.) If you draw your Club in Order to Strike, & proceed so far in the Stroke as to be bringing down your Club; If then, your Club shall break, in any way, it is to be Accounted a Stroke. 12.) He whose Ball lyes farthest from the Hole is obliged to play first. 13.) Neither Trench, Ditch or Dyke, made for the preservation of the Links, nor the Scholar's Holes, or the Soldier's Lines, Shall be accounted a Hazard; But the Ball is to be taken out and play’d with any Iron Club.

CAPTAINS RULE OF THE MONTH How to Fairly Search for a Ball Purpose: Rule 7 allows the player to take reasonable actions to fairly search for his or her ball in play after each stroke. • But the player still must be careful, as a penalty will apply if the player acts excessively and causes im-provement to the conditions affecting his or her next stroke. The player gets no penalty if the ball is acci-dentally moved in trying to find or identify it, but must then replace the ball on its original spot. • Lifting Ball to Identify It If a ball might be a player’s ball but cannot be identified as it lies: • The player may lift the ball to identify it (including by rotating it), but: The spot of the ball must first be marked, and the ball must not be cleaned more than needed to identify it (except on the putting green) If the lifted ball is the player’s ball or another player’s ball, it must be replaced on its original spot. If the player lifts his ball when it is not reasonably necessary to identify it (except on the putting green where the player may lift), and fails to mark the spot of the ball before lifting it or cleans it when not al-lowed, the player gets one penalty stroke. Ball Accidentally Moved in Trying to Find or Identify It There is no penalty if the player’s ball is accidentally moved by the player, opponent or anyone else while trying to find or identify it. If this happens, the ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated). In doing so: • If the ball was on, under or against any immovable obstruction, integral object, boundary object or growing or attached natural object, the ball must be replaced on its original spot on, under or against such object. If the ball was covered by sand, the original lie must be re-created and the ball must be replaced in that lie. But the player may leave a small part of the ball visible when doing so. The penalty for playing an incorrectly substituted ball or playing the ball from a wrong place is 2 strokes in stroke play, and loss of the hole in match play.

Congratulations
