Helping around the world

The number of people affected by naturaldisasters around the world is risingɠ In 2013 every day an average of 32200 were forced to leave their

homes

ɠ According to the UNHCR there are almost 512 million forcibly

displaced people in the world-that represents more than 10 times

the population of New Zealand

As a result disaster response continues to represent the largest portion

of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cross Crescent

Societies (IFRC) with assistance to around 30 million people

annually from refugees to victims of natural disasters

The immediate effects include loss of life and damage to property

and infrastructure with the survivors traumatised by the

experience and often left without adequate shelter food water andother necessities to sustain life Rapid action is required to prevent

further loss of life

March 9ndash15th 2015 is Red Cross Annual Appeal Week to raise funds sothat Red Cross can be on the spot straight away when there is a disaster

as well as provide ongoing programmes in schools and throughout local

communities

Save-a-Mate A non-judgemental free programme designed to teach alcohol and drug

awareness and first aid in relation to alcohol and other drug emergencies

The programme is designed to teach students how to respond to any

adverse alcohol and drug incidents they may experience

First AidNew Zealand Red Cross subsidises first aid training through both the Star

and Gateway programmes

Meals on wheels Since 1951 Red Cross has been making meals on wheels deliveries to people

who are confined to home live alone are unable to get out to buy food or

struggle to cook their own ldquoItrsquos not so much the meal as it is a face coming

to the door They are mostly alone and just looking for someone to talk tordquo

says Doug Paterson a volunteer meals on wheels driver

Refugee resettlement Around the world tens of millions of people have been forced to flee their

homes

ɠ 167 million are refugees

ɠ 333 million are internally displaced persons (IDPs)

ɠ 11 million are asylum-seekers hoping to achieve refugee status

ɠ Only 1 of refugees are permanently resettled

ɠ Just 6 return home

ɠ Globally 17 years is the average time some refugees spend in a refugee

camp

Each year through the United Nations quota programme New Zealand

welcomes around 750 refugees giving them the opportunity to build new

lives in a safe place

Helping around the world

The number of people affected by naturaldisasters around the world is risingɠ In 2013 every day an average of 32200 were forced to leave their

homes

ɠ According to the UNHCR there are almost 512 million forcibly

displaced people in the world-that represents more than 10 times

the population of New Zealand

As a result disaster response continues to represent the largest portion

of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cross Crescent

Societies (IFRC) with assistance to around 30 million people

annually from refugees to victims of natural disasters

The immediate effects include loss of life and damage to property

and infrastructure with the survivors traumatised by the

experience and often left without adequate shelter food water andother necessities to sustain life Rapid action is required to prevent

further loss of life

March 9ndash15th 2015 is Red Cross Annual Appeal Week to raise funds sothat Red Cross can be on the spot straight away when there is a disaster

Meals on wheels Since 1951 Red Cross has been making meals on wheels deliveries to people

who are confined to home live alone are unable to get out to buy food or

Refugee resettlement Around the world tens of millions of people have been forced to flee their

Helping around the world

The number of people affected by naturaldisasters around the world is risingɠ In 2013 every day an average of 32200 were forced to leave their

homes

ɠ According to the UNHCR there are almost 512 million forcibly

displaced people in the world-that represents more than 10 times

the population of New Zealand

As a result disaster response continues to represent the largest portion

of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cross Crescent

Societies (IFRC) with assistance to around 30 million people

annually from refugees to victims of natural disasters

The immediate effects include loss of life and damage to property

and infrastructure with the survivors traumatised by the

experience and often left without adequate shelter food water andother necessities to sustain life Rapid action is required to prevent

further loss of life

March 9ndash15th 2015 is Red Cross Annual Appeal Week to raise funds sothat Red Cross can be on the spot straight away when there is a disaster

as well as provide ongoing programmes in schools and throughout local

communities

Meals on wheels Since 1951 Red Cross has been making meals on wheels deliveries to people

who are confined to home live alone are unable to get out to buy food or

struggle to cook their own ldquoItrsquos not so much the meal as it is a face coming

to the door They are mostly alone and just looking for someone to talk tordquo

says Doug Paterson a volunteer meals on wheels driver

Refugee resettlement Around the world tens of millions of people have been forced to flee their

homes

ɠ 167 million are refugees

ɠ 333 million are internally displaced persons (IDPs)

ɠ 11 million are asylum-seekers hoping to achieve refugee status

ɠ Only 1 of refugees are permanently resettled

ɠ Globally 17 years is the average time some refugees spend in a refugee

camp

Each year through the United Nations quota programme New Zealand
