All-Band ReunionAt Homecoming 2015!

Looking For a New Editor

ATTENTION ALL- BAND OLD BOYS NOW LISTEN UP! It’s hard to believe, as the years fly by, but 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the Wentworth Marching Band’s winning of the All-American Band Award during the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. To celebrate this remarkable accomplishment, we’re reaching out to ALL former band members. Although this honor was awarded in 1965, it was made possible by all the old boy band members who helped create the band’s reputation that resulted in this award. We’ll provide more details later, but please save the date which coincides with Homecoming 2015, the weekend of Oct. 9-11. Bring your stories and remember the statute of limitations has expired so your reputations are safe. For more information you can contact: Guy Harkness, ‘63, 816-863-4340, [email protected] LTC Bob Applehans, ‘64 (In Memory Of) Dr. Chuck Himmler, ‘65 Bill Labhart, ‘66, 916-801-2103, [email protected]

The Wentworth Military Academy Alumni Association is looking for a new editor to take over the du-ties of editing and publishing this newsletter, The Red Dragon. Jim Wright has been the editor of this publication since its inception in 2010 and has loved every minute of it. One of the best parts of the job is in renewing old friendships and making new ones. However, it is time to pass the mantle of leadership to someone else. Are you that person? The skill set required is fairly straightforward. For this job your are the editor, writer, layout artist, com-puter operator, photo retouch artist, and you also sweep the floor. The editor receives articles, pictures, and ideas from all over and puts them together in a format that is, hopefully, enjoyable and informative. The editor has a wealth of people who provide that information and several people who help proof the final product. With the communications capabilities that we have today, it is easy and fast to collaborate with everyone involved. If you are interested in becoming the editor for The Red Dragon, please contact one or more of the following people: Guy Harkness, Al McCormick, or Jim Wright. You can find their contact information on Page 4 of this newsletter. I hope that you will take this opportunity to get directly involved with our Alumni Association by volun-teering to become our new editor. Please let us hear from you!

By the time you receive this publication, school will be out, and the summer months will be just in front of us. Time con-tinues to fly by, and the older we get, the more it “flies”! Your Alumni Association is doing very well, and stream-ing right along. Other than cleaning up a few odds and ends, such as getting the By-Laws in current order (thank you Bill Labhart!), and, of course, trying to increase and grow our membership, all is very well. At Homecoming of this year, we will be installing a new Alumni President, as my ten-ure is just about completed. Like I said, time flies when you’re having fun! Speaking of Homecoming, those weekend events will only be approximately three months away! We’re sincerely hoping that all of you are making firm plans to attend, and all of us will be working very diligently to make the 2015 festivi-ties the very best possible. The 25th anniversary

(1990), the 50th anniversary (1965), and the 60th

anniversary (1955), will continue to hold special prominence. However, and no matter how many years have passed, your attendance will obvi-ously be very much appreciated. In closing, I would like to make note of, and rec-ognize one of our very dedicated members of the Association concerning a recent achievement, as he will be unable to attend Homecoming in Octo-ber due to other commitments. Please congratu-late Jim Wright. Jim is the 2015 recipient of the Bobby Gadt Award, given annually to the person that continues to display a tremendous amount of work, effort, and dedication to the Academy, and the Alumni Association. Recently, Al McCor-mick, Scott Hefner, and I presented the award to Jim followed by a luncheon. Many thanks in advance for your kindness and support over the last couple of years, and during my time as your Alumni Association President. Hope to see you --- FOR SURE --- at Home-coming!

If you’re reading this newsletter that means that you have access to the Internet. Most of you probably already know that Wentworth has a great website, but did you know that the Went-worth Alumni Association has a Facebook page? You need to be approved in order to become a group member so if you’re interested in finding out what’s going on with your fellow Old Boys, you need to do the following: Go to the follow-ing web address: www.facebook.com/groups/WMAalumni. This is a private group strictly for alumni and their families, so you need to put in a request to join. It’s easy to do. Hope to see you online.

Dear Fellow Dragons: It is nearly impossible for me to believe that a year has passed since I joined the Wentworth family. The past 12 months have been exciting ones and I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know so many past and present students of WMA. My travels have taken me from Oklahoma to Wisconsin and I want to thank the gracious alumni who have welcomed me into their com-munities and shared memories that tell the story of this institution. As I said in my first article for this newsletter, your relationship with your alma mater is still alive and we welcome you to con-tinue writing your Wentworth story. As the new school year unfolds we hope you will embrace opportunities to both celebrate and connect with your Wentworth family as we begin to touch the lives of another group of young people … the 136th Corps of Cadets. Celebrate Each of you is an important part of the 135-year history of Wentworth Military Academy and College. Wentworth continues its rich tradition of transforming lives and creating the leaders of tomorrow. We join with you in celebrating not only the accomplishments of our current students but also those of our alumni family. Alumni from around the world continue to stand out as leaders and we hope that you will continue to share your milestones with us. Connect There are so many ways for alumni to stay con-nected and we encourage each of you to look for ways to stay involved with your classmates and the institution. Homecoming 2015 is right around the corner. Please make plans to join us Octo-ber 9–11 to reconnect with Wentworth and your fellow classmates. Our alumni Facebook page is another wonderful way to stay connected while receiving updates and sharing accomplishments. From local rallies to web broadcasts of sporting events, This year will offer a wide variety of op-

portunities to connect and we hope all of you will take advantage. In closing, I want to thank each of you for your support of the institution over the past year. I am so grateful for all you have done to help us touch the lives of young people. Let me begin by thank-ing those who have given their time to assist us in recruiting new students. From staffing college fairs to visiting local high schools, your dedication does not go unnoticed and Wentworth continues to grow thanks to your support. Finally, I would like to thank those who have generously provid-ed gifts to ensure that today’s students continue to flourish in an exceptional environment. From providing scholarships to young people who may otherwise be unable to attend to equipping class-rooms with cutting edge technology, your support truly transforms lives. I wish all of you a wonderful summer and hope to see many of you at Home-coming.

State of the Schoolby Col. Mike Lierman, ‘73 President/Superintendent, WMA

Michael Lierman ‘73

Dear Alumni: We have finished out the 2014-15 school year and the 135th Corps of Cadets has been dismissed. This has been a very good school year and the Corps of Cadets and our commuter college students have done a great job continuing the traditions that many of you helped create during your time at Wentworth. We had the opportunity to celebrate the 135th

anniversary of Wentworth during this school year. We took the opportunity to have a Founders Day ceremony in which some of the cadets wore uni-forms from the past and discussed the state of the Academy during those decades. It was a very informative ceremony that allowed us to take a look back in time. We discussed the founding families and how the Academy has transformed through the years. As I think back upon this school year, I have had the opportunity to see the cadets/students who walk the campus make some great strides in their lives that will prepare them to go forward and be successful. We had 17 high school se-niors and 92 college cadets/students walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. We had the privilege to watch 23 cadets raise their hand and become second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. We also saw six Falcon cadets come to Wentworth this year to prep for their opportunity to receive an appointment to the Air Force Academy. All six of them will report to Colorado Springs this summer to begin their Air Force careers. This continues our 22-year tradition of 100 percent of our Falcon Cadets receiving their appointments to the Acad-emy. That tradition started in 1972 with Falcon Cadet Mark Welsh coming to the campus and he now is the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He sent the Falcon cadets a letter congratulating them on continuing the tradition, and he looks forward to watching their careers grow as they go forward. I have a short list of some of the four-year col-leges that our cadets will attend next year. They are: University of Missouri, University of Central

Missouri, Missouri State University, Norwich Uni-versity, Louisiana State University, University of Colorado-Denver, University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Nebraska, Oregon State University, University of Arkansas, Arizona State University, Texas A&M, UCLA, College of the Ozarks. As you can see, our cadets/students are attending colleges and universities across the nation. I am very proud of our strong academic program that prepares our cadets/students to go forward in the college careers. The campus will be quiet for a few days and then the JCLC camps, Camp Lead, and others will be here on campus for the summer. It is always an exciting time to welcome new cadets to the cam-pus. Also, during the summer this year we will be renovating some of our classrooms in the scho-lastic building if you would like to help support this effort, go to https://www.tilt.com/campaigns/wentworth-classroom-transformation. Also we are going to close Tillotson Barracks for the summer and give it a complete painting face-lift. It is hard to believe that it has been in use for 12 years. I would close with inviting you to come back to campus and visit with us any time you are in the area and certainly invite you to come back for Homecoming 2015 … and meet with friends from your class and share in the memories you made. Thanks for your continued support of Wentworth and may the band always play … may the brass always shine… and above all may the Corps al-ways sound off!

Board TalkRegis McDonald, ‘64, WMA Board Chairman

Regis McDonald,

‘64

Much has happened in the last three months at Went-worth. I would like to share some of the good news with you. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees re-mains actively involved with Colonel Michael Lierman and his President’s Cabinet to make sure the crit-ical areas of enrollment management, finance, and fund raising remain the collective focus of all. At the Spring Meeting of the Board of Trustees at Wentworth on April 24-25, these matters were fully discussed. Steady progress is seen with greater numbers of first time donors giving to Wentworth along with those who have given in past years. Also, a multi-pronged approach directed at increased enrollment in the high school, military, and civil-ian colleges for the 2015-2016 academic year to meet the projection of 265 cadets (high school – 95, college – 170). This includes 20 selected cadets for Wentworth’s new Soccer School of Ex-cellence that will be part of the high school this fall. Considerable attention is being paid as well, to the targeted marketing of Wentworth’s summer camp program, Camp LEAD in local, regional, and national print media, social media platforms, and on Wentworth’s website. This initiative is di-rectly linked to the on-going efforts of Noel-Levitz, an educational consulting firm working with Wen-tworth. Presently, Noel-Levitz is engaged in such activities as developing annual marketing and re-cruitment plans, student satisfaction inventories, website concept, and other essential areas that are critical to support a vibrant learning environ-ment at Wentworth. At the Spring Board of Trustees Meeting, the six Wentworth Falcon Cadets, four females and two males, who are freshman in the college, were recognized for receiving appointments to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) for this coming fall. For 22 consecutive years,

100% of Wentworth’s Falcons have met the US-AFA requirements for acceptance and earned their appointments. Also, c/LTC Jade Dale-Perry, the Battalion Commander spoke to the Trustees about the 135th Corps of Cadets and her focus on increasing the Esprit de Corps. I had the distinct honor to be present at the 135th

Commissioning and Commencement Ceremo-nies on May 15-16. Both events were powerful in regards to celebrating the achievements of 23 college cadets commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the United States Army by 1984 Wentworth graduate Major General (Ret.) Johnny R. Miller, and witnessing the graduates of the high school, military, and civilian college receive their well-earned diplomas from Colonel Lierman and me. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II’s Commence-ment Address was timely in its message to the graduates to spend their lives building bridges of understanding and tolerance, not walls that di-vide us. By now you should have received Wentworth’s Spring Campaign mailer. Please consider mak-ing a donation to Wentworth to support the con-tinuing renovation of classrooms, so it can con-tinue to train leaders for the future in a cutting edge educational environment.Achieve the Honorable!

The dates of the 2015 Homecoming Weekend have been announced. Plan now to join us for Homecoming on October 9-11, 2015.

After becoming a member of the Wentworth Mili-tary Academy Alumni Association, Jim Wright hit the ground running. He ran for and was elected to the office of president-elect in October of 2009 and began to participate in both Association and Academy activities. Many of his ideas were im-plemented and served to strengthen the Associa-tion. In 2011, after being elected to the office of Presi-dent, he joined the Century Club showing his fi-nancial support for the Academy which continues to this day. Shortly thereafter, he became a life member of the Alumni Association and began supporting various activities as a volunteer and financially. Under his term as president, membership ranks began to grow and Jim implemented an alumni newsletter which is distributed to over four thou-sand members of the alumni body. Jim is an excellent example of the spirit of Bob-by Gadt and is most deserving of the award. The award was presented to Jim in March, since he will not be able to attend Homecoming this year.

Bobby Gadt, ‘50 excelled in athletics while a student at Wentworth. He lettered in track, foot-ball, and basketball. He was recipient of the Bill Cook Award for athletic excellence and held the status of Honorable Mention on the National Ju-nior College Athletic Association All Star Team in 1947. Bobby is a charter member of the Went-worth Athletic Hall of Fame. Bobby was a deep-ly devoted member of the Wentworth Booster Club, donating thousands of hours working the concessions stands and recruiting membership to support Wentworth athletics and other cadet activities. He was also a dedicated family man and com-munity member which is reflected in the Gadt family activities. Bobby and his wife were foster parents to more than 150 foster children. Bobby was forever friendly and he never knew a strang-er; once he met you, he was your friend. Candidates for the Bobby Gadt award are eval-uated annually and awarded to deserving individ-uals. Minimum criteria includes volunteering with the Alumni Association and accepting an active role, and financial participation in Academy and Alumni Association support.

“Today’s EC from DC is a special one. It’s not about me, or what’s going on in Washington, DC, or what we see on the news. It’s about six promising young people from our community. “These six students who attend Wentworth Academy in Lexington, Missouri, received their appoint-ments to attend the US Air Force Academy next fall. As your Fifth District Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, each year I have the privilege of nominating a limited number of people to four of the five service academies. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. “Cadets Jeffery Austin, of Pringle, Pennsylvania, Luke Easton of Spring Texas, Emma Lindberg of Shepherdstown, WV, Amanda Miller of Lakeville, MN, Paige Ramirez of Wood Dale, IL and Nicole Sev-erson of Laverne, MN, have received appointments to attend the USAFA beginning next fall. Our entire community should be proud and honored of their progress and potential. “The United States Air Force Academy is a military school for officer candidates for the United States Air Force and was founded in 1954. Its campus is located north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado. It is very, very difficult to be selected to the USAFA. According to their website, in 2012, the acceptance rate was 12%. “Wentworth Military Academy and College is one of eight institutions authorized by the Falcon Foun-dation to host the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Falcon program. The Falcon program at Wentworth is a total immersion into military training, challenging academics and character develop-ment, all of which provide a competitive edge essential to success at the Air Force Academy. All six of the Cadets participating in the Falcon program received appointments to USAFA, continuing Went-worth’s 100% Falcon to USAFA acceptance rate. “A few months ago, I had the honor of hosting many students from our community who I have been able to nominate to our military academies. Their records thus far were extremely impressive and I look forward to seeing their success in the future.”

WMA Alumni Association AnnouncesFlag Honors Program

The Wentworth Military Academy Alumni Asso-ciation along with WMA, is proud to continue the Flag Honors Program. The Flag Honors Program is designed to honor former cadets, faculty, and friends of Wentworth Military Academy with a memorial United States flag that has actually flown over the WMA cam-pus. The school will fly a 5-foot by 9.5-foot flag on the main quadrangle flagpole, if you wish, on a specific date. The flag will be properly folded and placed in a memorial case with the name of the person being honored engraved on a brass plaque. Also included will be a certificate of au-thenticity. All of this will be shipped to wherever you wish, or presented during an on-campus cer-emony. The cost of this honor is $300 per flag. The pro-ceeds will be used to support the Alumni Asso-ciation’s scholarship programs along with other programs supported and funded by the Associa-tion. Think of this as a way to honor you, a loved one, or even an old roommate and help support the school, through the Alumni Association, at the same time. For more information, please contact the presi-dent of the WMA Alumni Association or Al Mc-Cormick at 816-820-0760, 816-741-7164, or [email protected]. Also, there will soon be a page in the Alumni portion of the WMA website that will have this information and a form that can be completed and sent in. All we ask is that you give us a reasonable length of time to get this done. We will be announcing the flag presentations as they occur.

Check out the WMA blogsite at www.wmaandc.blogspot.com and scroll through the many blog posts. Have fun.

Rutgers Recruiting Rutgers offers cornerback Julian Love, teammate of offensive line signee Jack Shutack In February, the Rutgers staff signed Jack Shutack, a 6-6, 275-pound offensive tackle out of Nazareth Academy (La Grange, Ill.), and they hope to do the same next year with teammate Julian Love, who they offered recently. “I was very excited,” said the 5-11, 175-pound Love regarding the offer. “Rutgers is a very nice school and my whole family realizes that. And so, we were all really pumped. “I like the program. I’m a big guy on academics and Rutgers is a very very nice school, so that’s defi-nitely a plus. And they did well in the Big Ten, so it’s definitely a possibility.” Could Love’s relationship with Shutack earn Rutgers an advantage in his recruitment? “Shutack is a good friend of mine,” said Love. “He’s our left tackle, obviously, and once I got the offer, he was excited and told me, ‘Dude, we could possibly be teammates.’ It excites me, too. He’s a great guy.” Love was complimentary of Schutack’s skill-set. “He’s a big body. He was one of our leaders this year,” he said. “You can see him from a mile away in school. He’s a huge, huge guy and so nice, so caring. He comes from pretty tough circumstances, so he’s a tough kid on the field. And you know, linemen, you have to be (nasty) when you need to be and he definitely is when he needs to be.” Love, also a sprinter during track and field season, currently holds 10 offers and has a penchant for making plays on both sides of the ball. Safety is his primary position, but he plays cornerback and linebacker, situationally, depending on an opposing team’s strengths. Love also plays wide receiver, is on every special teams unit, and essentially, never leaves the field. “(Rutgers) likes my versatility,” said the three-star recruit. “I have good ball skills, they said. So they really like that from a defensive standpoint, a player who can catch and run pretty well.” Most schools are recruiting Love as a cornerback or safety, while Wisconsin and Maryland like him at slot receiver. Rutgers running backs coach Norries Wilson, who hails from the Midwest, began recruiting Love two months ago, while recruiting Shutack. And defensive coordinator Joe Rossi has also chipped in on his recruitment. Love hopes to make his collegiate decision in April or May, and he’ll take multiple visits to schools courting him up until that time. He’ll be at Notre Dame Saturday, Northwestern April 4 and Penn State April 11. And he’s considering visiting Rutgers with Shutack for the Scarlet-White game and Boston College after that. Of the 10 schools to offer him, Love says Boston College, Northwestern, Illinois, Rutgers and Indiana stand out most. Love’s father, Detraiter, played college basketball at Wentworth Military Academy (Lexington, Mo.) and his sister, Devinne, is a freshman basketball player at Marquette.

Cans For Cadetsby Kathy Cormany

The scholarship fund-raiser “Cans for Cadets”, has been going on for the past three years. This was a project born out of the enthusiasm of Jim Cormany (JC ’61), for recycling in general and as a way for someone’s “trash” to become someone else’s “treasure”. The intent is to generate mon-ey for the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund by recycling aluminum cans. Jim is assisted by John Francis (‘83). This year the two Old Boys presented a check to the Alumni Association in the amount of $125. This represents a total of approximately 6,480 cans that didn’t go into a landfill since Homecoming last year. If everyone reading this article did this or some-thing similar, think about the money that could be generated for scholarships! Be creative! It’s not that hard! Not only could this be fun and start a friendly competition going as to who recycles the most (no fair putting money from your own pocket into the pot, this is supposed to be money that you didn’t have to work to make in the first place), it would help the environment and would certainly benefit Wentworth. If you have questions about this project, please contact Jim Cormany at [email protected] and he will be happy to answer your questions. Editor’s note: In 2012, this effort recycled 272 pounds of cans (about 8,430 cans) and provided $173.50 for our Alumni Scholarship Fund. For 2013, 8,240 cans were recycled and $166 do-nated. For 2014, 6480 cans were recycled and $125 donated. That is a total of 18,150 cans re-cycled and $464.50 donated to our scholarship fund -- a great start.

We hope to see you at Homecoming on October 9-11, 2015!

--1940s--F Dr. David L. Globus, ‘47 was presented a 135th Anniversary Wentworth Pen by Regis Mc-Donald, ‘64, and Chairman of the Board of Trust-ees on May 12, 2015. Regis reports that it was a wonderful, spirit filled two-hour meeting. David talked about COL James M. Sellers, Sr., who was a significant influence on his life.

Also during the meeting, David mentioned a classmate, Norman P. Goldberg, ‘47, who he saw several years ago in Boca Raton, Florida. Norman is a former executive at Goldberg Broth-ers in Denver, Colorado. The company continues to manufacture top quality film reels and film re-lated hardware for the motion picture industry. However, with movies going digital, Goldberg Brothers is changing too. The company’s flag-ship film reels have found new life in charming and distinctive home décor and furniture prod-ucts that capture the mystique and romance of Hollywood’s golden age. David’s two brothers Richard, ‘46 and Robert, ‘51, also attended Wentworth.
