Cortland has finished tied for first in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings each of the last three seasons. With 14 starters returning from last year’s 8-3 squad that captured the ECAC Northeast title, 12th-year head coach dan macNeill’s Red Dragons will be expected to finish among the upper tier in the competitive NJAC again this fall.

Senior quarterback Ray miles leads a solid group of returning offensive players. Miles took over the starting signalcaller duties in the first quarter of last year’s season opener due to an alex Smith injury and completed 168-of-318 passes (52.8 percent) for 2,157 yards and 19 touchdowns to earn honorable mention All-NJAC honors. Miles will be challenged for the top quarterback spot by dan

Pitcher, a Cortland High School product and transfer from Division I Colgate University.

Regardless of which quarterback wins the starting role, they will be protected by an experienced offensive line that returns all five starters, now all seniors, from a season ago. Guard James mignone begins his third year as a starter, while center John Schillinger, tackles Justin Kindt and Sean James, and guard Joe Weinstein all enter their second year as starters. Mignone and James were both second team All-NJAC choices last year, while Schillinger was honorable mention all-league.

Despite being the official starter in only three of his 10 games last season, senior tailback andrew Giuliano was the Red Dragons’ leading rusher with 740 yards and six touchdowns and also caught 11 passes. Sophomores Cory Russell and Will Loeb also saw time at tailback last season off the bench, with Russell rushing for 133 yards and three scores in six games and Loeb recording 84 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Loeb was also one of the team’s punt and kickoff returners last season.

The returning receiving corps features seniors eric Hajnos and mike Lane and juniors Zacc Guaragno and Wayne Wheeler. Hajnos caught 30 passes last season, second on the team, for 465 yards and four touchdowns and Lane was third with 16 receptions. Guaragno proved to be a big-play receiver as five of his 11 catches resulted in touchdowns. Wheeler finished with five receptions in 10 outings.

The offensive positions hit hardest by graduation are fullback and tight end, with neither the starter nor backup from each spot last season returning. Among those in the mix at fullback are sophomore transfer dominick Sair and senior david murphy. Sair, the brother of former Cortland All-America safety Stef Sair, was formerly a linebacker at Division II C.W. Post University. Senior Jeffrey Lang is one of the top contenders for the starting tight end role after serving as a backup wide receiver the past two seasons.

On defense, Cortland’s front seven features five returning starters. Senior end Ben Nagle and senior tackles Terry eason and Richard Rolo are back on the front line, while

sophomore Brian Haas and senior Jim Smith lead the linebacker corps.

Nagle earned first team All-East honors and was the ECAC Northeast Bowl Most Valuable Player last fall. His 73 tackles included team bests of nine sacks and 16.5 total tackles for losses, and he also led the squad with three forced fumbles. Eason finished seventh on the team with 35 tackles and Rolo made 21 tackles in eight games. Lou Crispo played eight games on the defensive line last year, four as a starter, and totaled three sacks among his 21 tackles.

Haas enjoyed one of the best years ever by a Cortland freshman last fall. The NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Year and the ECAC Southeast Rookie of the Year, Haas earned a starting role in the third week of the season and finished with a team-high 105 tackles in 11 games. He is the first Red Dragon freshman since defensive stats were first officially tracked in 1979 to reach the century mark in tackles. Smith, an honorable mention All-NJAC selection, was second on the team with 79 total tackles and 11 tackles for lost yardage in 10 games. He also ranked second on the team with five pass breakups.

Senior adam mcPartland was a starting linebacker for two games last year before an injury opened the door for Haas. McPartland did return for the final three games and totaled 24 tackles in five contests overall. The most interesting addition at linebacker is graduate student Josh Jablonski, who has played in parts of five different seasons for the Red Dragons in the past six years. He earned a medical redshirt after playing in just two games in 2002, then posted three solid seasons from 2003-05 that included 68 tackles in 2004 and 57 in 2005. Another injury limited him to two games in 2006, and he did not play last season before deciding to return this fall.

Senior safety matt Berman is the lone Red Dragon in the secondary with significant playing experience. Last season, Berman missed time with various injuries but still recorded 49 tackles, fifth best on the team, in just seven games. Berman also started eight games in 2006 and finished with 67 tackles. Sophomore safety Colan Shue made 26 tackles and intercepted two passes in 10 games, one as a starter, during his freshman campaign last autumn. Graduate student mark Schaller returns to the squad after seving as a backup safety in 2004 and 2005. Schaller was also a point guard on Cortland’s men’s basketball team for four seasons from 2004-08. Cortland lost three quality cornerbacks to graduation, including career interception leader Jeff Beck. The top candidates to fill that position include junior Jamell Scott and sophomore Joe Lopez.

Junior punter Kyle Peterson returns after averaging 36.8 yards per attempt in his Red Dragon debut. He proved to be an accurate weapon in opponents’ territory as 17 of his punts pinned foes inside their own 20-yard line versus only three touchbacks. Lang, in addition to tight end duties, is the favorite to replace graduating placekicker matthew mintz. An All-East performer, Mintz made a school-record 12 field goals each of the last two seasons. Also competing for the kicking duties will be freshman marc Corrado.

Coaching Staffdan macNeill, Head Coach

Dan MacNeill begins his 12th season as SUNY Cortland’s head football coach in 2008. His teams are a combined 69-44 (.611) and have made six postseason appearances, including two NCAA tournament showings.

In 2007, MacNeill’s squad finished 8-3, won the ECAC Division III Northeast Bowl and finished tied atop the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings for the third straight year. The previous fall, he guided the Red Dragons to a 9-2 record and an ECAC Division III Northeast Bowl bid. Cortland failed to receive an NCAA berth despite a 9-1 regular-season mark.

In 2005, MacNeill led the Red Dragons to a 7-2 regular-season record. Cortland earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs and finished the season 7-3. Cortland’s other NCAA appearance under MacNeill came during an 8-3 campaign in his first season in 1997.

In 2002, MacNeill led the Red Dragons to a 9-2 mark -- the most wins at the school since 1990 -- and the ECAC Division III Northwest title. The team also placed second in the NJAC with a 4-2 record. In 2003, Cortland finished the regular season with a 5-4 mark before losing in the ECAC Northwest championship game.

Among MacNeill’s other highlights at Cortland are a 32-31 win over nationally second-ranked and eventual national semifinalist Rowan University in the 2001 season and six victories against rival Ithaca College in the annual “Cortaca Jug” game.

MacNeill has coached 12 All-Americans, 49 All-East and 45 All-ECAC players at Cortland. Those players included defensive tackle Adam Haas, who was a Gagliardi Trophy national Player of the Year finalist in 2006, 1997 ECAC Upstate New York Player of the Year Omar Darling and 2007 ECAC Southeast Rookie of the Year Brian Haas.

In addition, MacNeill’s players have earned 106 All-NJAC honors since the program joined the league in 2000, highlighted by the selection of Adam Haas as the 2005 NJAC Defensive Player of the Year.

An assistant coach at Division I-AA Villanova University from 1984-1996, MacNeill is Cortland’s 11th head coach since the school’s modern era of football began in 1924. MacNeill served as linebackers coach at Villanova and was the team’s defensive coordinator from 1988-96.

One of the nation’s top defensive coaches, MacNeill’s charges consistently ranked among the best defensive teams in the Yankee Conference. His 1991 squad finished the year first nationally in scoring defense, second in total defense and fifth in rushing defense while leading the Yankee Conference in every defensive category. The Wildcats placed first nationally in rushing defense in 1992. In 1996, Villanova finished 8-4 and earned a berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

While at Villanova, MacNeill coached three AFCA/Kodak First Team All-Americans, one Associated Press All-American, six first team All-Yankee Conference performers, six first team All-ECAC selections and one player who went on to the NFL. He received a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Villanova in 1994.

A 1979 Cortland graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, MacNeill was a four-year Red Dragon letterwinner and three-year starter at linebacker and defensive tackle. He served as a team tri-captain during his senior campaign in 1978. In his last varsity game against Southern Connecticut State, he was credited with 11 unassisted tackles and three quarterback sacks.

MacNeill began his football coaching career as an assistant at Port Byron (N.Y.) Central High School from 1980 to 1982, prior to being named as a graduate assistant coach at Ithaca College. He coached Ithaca’s junior varsity team in 1982 and was in charge of the Bombers’ receivers in 1983.

A native of Walton, N.Y., MacNeill was an all-league defensive end at Walton Central High School as a senior in 1974. MacNeill and his wife, Sherrie, have two daughters -- Mikayla and Maura.

about SuNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, approximately 7,500 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed ninth nationally out of approximately 430 colleges and universities in the 2007-08 all-sport United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division III standings. The award was formerly known as the Sears Directors’ Cup from 1995-2002 and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup in the 2002-03 school year. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only six nationwide to finish in the top 20

each of the last 13 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 13 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on -campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena, racquetball and squash courts, a wrestling room, modern athletic training facilities and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
