NZ Programme of the Year 2011

THIS WEEKEND could see a significant milestone in the way we think about football.

Leicester City travel to Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground, needing a win to clinch the English Premier League title.

Requiring three points from their last three games means the Foxes could even afford to lose at Manchester and they’d still remain favourites for the title.

Favourites? This was a team that started the season as 5,000–1 outsiders in a competition many believed had become the exclusive domain for only a few clubs, all boosted

Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, says we can learn from Leicester City ...

‘... football would be no fun if we didn’t have upsets and surprise results ... ’

by owners prepared to invest hundreds of millions of pounds.

The significance of Leicester winning the EPL is that it provides proof that dreams are possible in football, no matter how crazy they may seem at first.

Leicester’s star players have been a midfielder plucked from the French second division and a striker who worked his way up football’s pyramind from non–league obscurity.

Just about everyone was willing to write off Leicester’s chances before the season began, especially as the club narrowly escaped relegation the year before and had suffered from off–the–pitch scandals over the summer.

Football would be no fun if we didn’t have upsets and surprise results.

Next weekend, Cambridge host Auckland University in the Chatham Cup.

A win would take our club into the last 64 of New Zealand’s oldest football competition.

Who would give us a chance of reaching the final stages of the cup?

Anything can happen on a football field.Ask the fans at Leicester.

Under coach Andrew Taylor, the team have overcome Huntly Thistle (6–0), Otorohangha (10–1) and Claudelands Rovers (3–0).

Cambridge head the competition on goal difference from Melville United’s development team, who also have 100% record.

The Cambridge effort so far is encouraging because the team is the youngest to represent the club in years, while it rebuilds after the retirement of a number of first team regulars.

Goalkeeper Jen Hull, who has missed only one game in four seasons, has taken over the captaincy, while the club has recruited well from Cambridge High School.

On Sunday, the side plays Mangokino (a).

Ricki Herbert works with some of the youngsters at John Kerkhof Park.

FORMER All Whites and Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert headed up a training camp for talented youngsters at Cambridge’s John Kerkhof Park during the school holidays.

Herbert flew back to New Zealand from the Maldives, where he is the national coach, to oversee a five–day residential national training camp staged by the Ricki Herbert Football Academy.

About 40 boys and girls aged 11-17 attended the camp, using nearby St Peter’s School for their accommodation and evening meal, while having breakfast and lunch at our senior clubrooms.

Players travelled from as far north as Whangarei and as far south as Invercargill to attend the camp. Participants included five members of the Cambridge Tornadoes junior team, and women’s first team players Astrid Howarth and Kaylee Oosthuysen.

Bay teams off to good start

Cambridge kids go into camp with Ricki Herbert

BAY OF PLENTY clubs have got off to a flying start in this year’s Federation competitions.

After four rounds of the WaiBOP Premiership, Ngongotaha and Rotorua United sit at the top of the table, both with 100% records.

And in the WaiBOP Championship, a resurgent Taupo tops the table with three wins from as many games.

In the WaiBOP Women’s Premier League — a new Federation competition this year — Otumoetai and Rotorua United have quickly shown they are capable of winning the title this year.

For once, the strength of the Bay doesn’t lie within Tauranga where Tauranga City United and Old Blues struggle in both the WaiBOP competitions.

Worse, Tauranga–based AFC Fury have been forced to withdraw from the Northern League after the club was unable to field a team in the reserves competition for three consecutive weeks, and a number of first team players quit the club after the death of backer Dave Cook.

Cambridge eyes will be tracking Ngongotaha who pushed our club to within a point of last year’s Premiership title.

In 2015, Cambridge finished its programme first, forcing Ngongotaha to play catch–up with its games in hand.

This time round, Cambridge has already got a game in hand on Ngongotaha after last weekend’s postponement of the WaiBOP Premiership fixture with Old Blues.

Both Ngongotaha and Cambridge remain in the Chatham Cup.

Melville UnitedFounded: 1972

Ground: Gower Park

Last season: 3rd

Formed as Melville District Schoolboys AFC, founders Bob Owens and Tony Tatler sought to combine the strengths of all the schools in the Melville area and originally operated from a base at Te Anau Park.

In 1981 the club moved to Gower Park. Melville steadily worked their way up the football ladder, winning the northern league third division in 1991, the first division in 1993, and the northern premier league in 1995. In 1996 national league side Waikato United amalgamated with Melville to form Melville United, and it was under this name that the new entity contested the summer national league in 1996-97 and 1997-98.

Melville reached the final of the Chatham Cup in 2003, losing 3-1 to Uni-Mt Wellington. The club’s first team currently competes in Northern League Premier Division.

In its early days, the teams played in light blue after the colours used by Cambridge University, England. 1951: The club held its first formal

meeting on March 20, 1951, appointing Viv Butler as its first president, and R.S.Entwistle as its patron.

Butler’s support of English club Arsenal led to a change of club colours and from the mid-1950s, Cambridge teams have played in red and white strips. 1957: The club played its home games

on the Town Square until 1957 when a two-room wooden shed was built on the Leamington Domain for £134.19. 1964: On December 1, 1964, the

Cambridge Borough Council agreed to provide the club with land on the town belt in Vogel Street and plans were drawn up for the clubrooms to be built. 1967: The club moved into the Vogel St

grounds, where it has been based since. The grounds were renamed John Kerkhof Park after Dutch immigrant John Kerkhof who, with members of his family and other supporters, built the clubrooms and changing facilities.

The grounds are now owned by the Waipa District Council but leased to the club on a long-term basis. 1972: The club applied for its senior

men’s team to join the Northern League competition. 1974: Extensions to the clubrooms

and playing fields became necessary and were built in 1974, with new junior grounds established beside the Polo Club grounds further north on Vogel St. 1978: The club elected its first women

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club. 2013: Cambridge FC and the

In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United.

This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup.

In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community.

WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches.

Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club).

The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

Programme cuts injury risk CAMBRIDGE FC are getting behind a warm–up programme that has been proven to reduce the risk of injuries by 30%.

It’s the FIFA 11+ Complete Warm-Up Programme for youth and senior players and Senior Men’s Club Captain Lee Turpett and U–13 youth coach Steve Thomas recently attended a NZ Football–WaiBOP Football workshop to learn how it works.

The programme has direct performance benefits for footballers — making fitter, faster and more agile players as well as reducing the risk of all injuries by 30%.

It is designed to be delivered by coaches, is easy to learn and implement into existing training sessions and completion of the course results in FIFA 11+ certification in as

little as two hours. The All Whites and Football Ferns have

been using FIFA 11+ for some time and all the ASB Premiership teams undertook to use it last summer season.

WaiBOP Football plans to encourage all 106 affiliated clubs and schools to adopt the programme, and is running workshops to team club representatives how to use it.

So what is FIFA 11+?“The programme takes 15–20 minutes

to do and is designed to replace a standard warm–up,” explains NZ Football’s doctor, Mark Fulcher.

“If it is done twice a week, it reduces the risk of injury by 30% and the risk of severe injury by 50%. These are things like an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury in the knee.”
