you use with your standard buffer. I use Meguires #9 for removing the fine scratches. I use Meguires #2 if the scratches are deep or the paint has turned rosy over time. Simply spread a small amount of the buffing compound on the paint and move the buff over it. You will find that you can not press the buff too hard to the paint because the buff will collapse. This is a safety fea-ture that will prevent you from burning the paint. By the way, if you have a spiral sewn or a sisal buff around, do not use them. They are too course for paint and they do not collapse. I have used this technique many times on many cars and always been happy with the results. It is much quicker than by hand and it is safe. After your have done the buffing, wash the buff before you use it again because the dry com-pound will be too course and leave scratches in your paint.

President’s Column (also Newsletter Editor’s, too!) Keith Gordon

First off I would like to say a big hello to everyone for the first time this New Year. This is my first column as the new President of the Red River Region. I consider myself honored to be elected and promise to do my best not to let anyone down. In doing so I promise to write a President’s column every month or the editor will kill me. (I’m not kid-ding, I will – Ed.) Just so you get the joke, we’re a small club and I cur-rently have two hats to wear. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Past President and co-founder Gord Luy for all his hard work these past two years. Gord worked many long hours with the club and its predecessor, the Porsche Club of Manitoba. I would also like to thank our former Vice-President, Eric Fossberg, for all his work over the years. He and Gord were the founding fathers of organized Porsche activities in Manitoba and we have them to thank for our region. As well, David Grant was the other candidate for President in the election and I wanted to thank him for running. Both of us stepped forward because we wanted to help the region, though neither of us knew the other was running. It’s great to see spirit within the club, and I also know that we can ask such an en-thusiastic individual to help out in organizing many events! (David has been our rally and Nord Stern organizer, as well as contributing editor to the newsletter) Anyway, thanks everybody. That transitions nicely into the next area I wanted to discuss. The club is continuing to grow. Membership stands at 33 and hopefully

BUFFING IN TIGHT PLACES Story & Buffing by Burnell Curtis, Lone Star Region

After I have washed my car for several months, despite my best efforts, there will be fine scratches in the paint. In addition to that, my 87 Car-rera has red enamel paint on it and it tends to turn rosy with time. No reason to put it off, it is time to get out the buffer and put a proper shine on the car. However, even though I have a very fine buffer, there are places on the car that can not be buffed with a conventional buffer. One of those places is the cowl. Attempt to buff in this area and you will scar the windshield washers or catch the buffer on the windshield wiper blades. Another area that is difficult is the bumpers. If the buffer touches the "smile" or the rubber bumpers, then it may burn them. What to do? Well, you could do these areas by hand. I have little success with buffing by hand. Maybe I am impatient and want to move too quickly but I usually end up with more scratches. I have discovered an easy solution to this. All you need is a standard 3/8" drill and some inexpensive parts to make a buffer that is very gentle and easy to use. Start by getting a "canton flannel buff" or a "loose section buff". The diameter should be 4" or 6" at the most. I usually get my parts from Eastwood, who is a company that sells supplies to those who restore cars. Their number is 1-800-345-1178. The parts numbers for the buffs are 13056 and 13042 for the 4" canton and the 4" loose buffs. To mount

the buff to then drill you will need a mandrel and that is part number 13054. Mount the buff to the man-drel and the mandrel to the drill and you are ready to go. NO, wait, you need something to use as an abra-sive, which is the same buffing compound that

Porsche Foundation Matches Employee Donations PCNA employees stepped up to help during the national crisis, raising $1,634 in donations for the United Way's September 11 Fund. The Por-sche Foundation matched the contribution, adding $1,866 to make it a round $3,500. A late addition from another employee brought the figure to $3,550. The funds mailed on Oct. 2, reported Stacey Hirsch, market representation coordinator and co-chair of the Community Involvement Team. Drive For Hope Donates 20 Percent to NY Firefighters Fund The 50-State Porsche Drive For Hope, originally scheduled to begin on Sept. 20, instead kicked off on Oct. 18 with a broadened mission. The record-setting challenge, intended to help The Hope Foundation raise funds and awareness for cancer research, will donate 20 percent of its proceeds to the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund. Three 911 Turbos traveled 11,000 miles through all 50 states, leaving Hono-lulu, Hawaii by cargo plane and ending in Las Vegas eight days later. Ten sponsors each pledged one dollar per mile, plus additional support. PCNA Sponsors Seinfeld and Friends Benefit Show For years, Jerry Seinfeld gave TV viewers a skewed look at life in New York City. In reality, he and fellow comedians care deeply about the city and its people. After the tragic attacks of Sept. 11, Seinfeld decided to put together an all-comedy benefit, including some of the biggest names in comedy: Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Will Ferrell of Saturday Night Live, Colin Quinn (formerly of Saturday Night Live), stand-up comic George Wallace, and Alan King, known to comedy audiences since "The Ed Sullivan Show." An avid Porsche enthusiast and collec-tor, Seinfeld contacted PCNA for help, and the company agreed to be-come the event's sole sponsor. Carnegie Hall was able to open Monday, October 8 for the show on short notice. With ticket prices ranging from

$50 to $2,500, the event took in more than $1.8 million. All proceeds went to the Twin Towers Fund and the New York Po-lice and FireWidow's and Children's Benefit Fund.

One of the things I would like to see in the next two years is for our membership to dou-ble. It shouldn’t be all that hard to achieve if we all pitch in. All new Porsches come with an application in the glove box, while both Auto Haus and Eurocars have

applications on display. Ultimately it would be nice if all members had a few applications in their glove box so that they might enlist fellow Porsche enthusiasts that they encounter on their travels.

I would also like to see everyone get their PCA stickers on their windshields so we are only sticking the applications under the wiper blades of non-members. (I’ll admit it, I only have my old Porsche Club of Manitoba sticker on my 911) Remember that increasing our benefits everyone. The larger the club grows the larger the number of volunteers we will have to put on bigger, better, and more varied activities for all of us. As well, the PCA funds our region based on the number of mem-bers.

Since I’m on that subject, a larger club is also more sustainable

as more people are available to handle the work of running the region. We need to concern ourselves with succession planning even at this small size. The Red River Region now has five members on our execu-tive. As well, Wayne Schellenkens is hard at work on the website and will be webmaster. He organized a scenic drive this past fall, and is host-ing the first Porsche movie night Friday, Feb-ruary 22. Mark that date in your calendar. In fact, since I’ll be hosting the next Porsche movie night, mark Saturday, March 23

in your calendar too. The last thing that I wanted to discuss here in my “vision for the

future” introduction column was to discuss succession planning just a little bit more. Now I want to take care that the club does not become too much about a few of us that are running things. There is always a danger that as both President and newsletter editor that too much of me will be pushed on a membership that may have different ideas. To take steps to prevent this, the first thing that the executive has commissioned is a membership survey. In discussing this with other PCA regions they have all experienced a poor response rate when they have tried surveys, so I’ll start by pleading with everybody. Please fill out the survey; it’s how we can find out how to make this club better for you. If you want to you can also choose to fax it, e-mail it, call me, or discuss it in person at one of our club events.

The other element in this is that I will be getting more volun-

teers involved in the newsletter so that it does not rely on one person. To that end, Malcolm Hinds has arranged for a more inexpensive print-ing service that can also handle binding and envelop stuffing. Tom Thorsteinson has graciously agreed to be our newsletter proofreader, and I recall that David Grant has indicated that he will undertake to pro-vide an article each issue, making him our new technical editor. I am looking for volunteers to continue with our member profiles, event follow-up arti-cles, and any other feature type articles. This will spread the contribution factor over a greater per-centage of the mem-bership and make it more of a team effort. (and reduce the amount of work that I have to on it – Ed.)

Around the nation - and indeed, around the world - people have come forward with a sincere desire to help in many ways.
