http://www.gulfcoastregionscca.org The Wiregrass Region sends its many thanks to our members who helped put on the Skelly Solo I. Without our help, they in no way could have put on the event. We had 9 workers who showed up and worked both days, whereas Wiregrass had 3 that worked both days and one for Sunday only. The best part is that Gulf Coast Region made up 1/3 of the total entries and took the fastest five times! Check on Top- pers write up as he is also covering the event. Now for some really bad news. We will only have the use of Bronson Field for June and July. As of 1 August we will no longer be able to hold events there. I have submitted a new written request for a contract with NAS, but the future use is really undecided at this time. The Air Force has taken over that part of Bronson. All of the tarmac will be torn up and removed, and it is uncertain if the runways will also be torn up. They will be having a Para Sail School there, and our use of the facility on weekends can not be determined at this time. We, along with the other clubs involved, are looking for alternate sites and are requesting help from the Navy. We need to treat the facility the same way we have for over 30 years and treat all per- sonnel with the same respect, this is not the time to show a disrespect for the site or the per- sonnel. Plans for the rest of the year are there- fore in total limbo, with no site as of now the remaining events will have to be cancelled un- less a site can be found that will suit our speci- fications. We need to stay centrally located in order to attract the most entrants from our area; we need to have total use of the site without having to furnish a list of competitors and crew prior to the event to the site managers; the site must be large enough to accommodate up to 100 entrants and lastly, we can not afford to pay large sums for the use of the site. Now for some more news – Ann was notified by Gulf State Park that they will be closing on 1 October and would not be able to host our annual Christmas Banquet. If you know of a centrally located facility that has the following credentials; Private Room, Preferably with an adjacent Motel for the out-of-towners, Good Food, Reasonable Prices, Can handle 35 to 50 people and do not mind staying open until about 11 PM or later, please let Ann know. The June Talladega Solo I is now his- tory. Gulf Coast Region had 8 hearty souls make the trip, with only one entry not getting a time, Gary Crook is still trying to get all of the bugs worked out of his car and had tire rub problems along with clutch problems which sent him home early. As for the rest of us, of the 10 fastest times posted, Gulf Coast had 7 of them, including the fastest 4 times. Richard Fe- lis and Terry Green battled it out all weekend, with Richard closing in on the track record. I played carburetor tuner all weekend and be- lieve that I am close to solving the problem, finishing 3rd fastest followed by Topper Jones. Steve Tompkins stuck his Formula Mazda in there for 5th. Marianne Jones was next and then with a superb drive by a novice, it was Kevin Haugh beating out his dad Tom. Tom (Continued on page 8) R.E.DITOR NOTES JUN/JUL 04

GULF COAST REGION, SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA Minutes of May 20, 2004

The meeting was held at Barnhill's in Pensacola with approximately 15 people attending (sorry, forgot to get the sign-in list). R. E. Walt Wurzbach called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. He described some of the problems he encountered in getting The Pylon newsletter emailed. He also noted that Deric Tubbs is now in England and without a telephone which complicated down- loading information to the website, expects to get this resolved in the near future. Treas-urer Walt Wurzbach reported a balance of $5872 with a bill due for 60 new pylons $285 plus S/H. For the quarter, received $1900 and spent $1661 ("looking real good."). SOLO II Presented get well card to Topper Jones. Topper reported that the school planned for June has been cancelled due to insufficient interest. He commented that he plans to try again in Septem-ber. He described the May course as "fairly easy; better than-April," He asked for a discussion of problems that have arisen with 3-driver cars. If too many of these happen, there will need to be adjustments. The question was raised about whether to allow four- driver cars. Suggestions were offered and discussed as well as a few glitches in the worker assignments. The latter was felt to be expected the first time in trying a new plan. The motion was made and seconded to try one more time with the current plan before making adjustments. This was approved. Topper noted that the group which ran first last month will run second this month; groups will move down each month in order to prevent people from being stuck in the same sequence. R.E. noted that he had passed out five Minor ID cards and that the system is working. He again commented on the need for volunteers at the Skelly event, adding that verified workers will be issued passes for a free event. The question of roll cages for SOLO I events was raised. R.E. said there is still no answer. There was discussion of what is allowed in what class and possible changes to come from the upcoming meeting. Another question was asked regarding the possibility of SOLO Trials at Bronson. R.E. replied that it is not likely based on the lack of interest when Tal-lahassee tried it. Information is available on the website for the June 19/20 at Little Talladega. Cost is $125. R.E. commented he will continue to replace pylons (60 of those in the worst con-dition). MISCELLANEOUS: Za1 Chitty reported on the possibility of a race track coming to South Ba1dwin. This was met with considerable skepticism based on past efforts. R.E. reminded everyone of the July 9/10 SARRC event at Barber Motorsports. "Za1 will be competing so "come on up and support him." There was no new news and the meeting adjourned. Submitted by,

Koby Subaru Solo Scene Report

For many of us the May Autocross at Bronson Field kicks off a month of heavy usage for our cars and our wallets. The week after our local autocross we cruised up to the Wiregrass Region for a two-day high speed Solo I event. The week before our next event at Bronson we travel to Talladega for a Solo I at the Taladaga Gran Prix Raceway. Unfortunately due to the timing I won’t be able to get into the results from Talladega but you can hear all about it at Sunday’s event. Those of you who haven’t seen the light and started Solo I Racing are missing out of a lot of fun. May found us having an event that was not as well attended as our events normally are with only 61 participants. The 61 drivers were treated to a course that was, well, different. While it wasn’t the first time I’d been called a “Diabolical Bastard” it was the first time I heard it from more than one driver. If you missed it there was a big slalom on the back section that was set up with one cone, then two cones, then three cones, then two, and back to one cone. It’s not the first time I’ve done a slalom with multiple cones and Walt suggested an awesome change to it as we were setting up the course. His idea was to turn the multiple cones sideways to the course so that the cars had to go really wide to make it through. We tried it and it was evilly good. Who’s the Diabolical Bastard now, eh?

The battles were good and a few upsets happened. The first was in A Stock where Bob Lang-ham who never used to get beat got walloped by over 3 seconds in his Sti by the Evo driving Scott McNally. Scott did a hell of a job of driving and even if Bob’s race wheels hadn’t been lost by UPS I think he would have still won the day. Ted Blaney has gotten hot in his S2000 and he simply waxed the fannies of the rest of the stock class by taking the SFTD by 1.145 seconds over the next fastest car. George King and his Carrera improve at every event but his 911 is just out-gunned by the S2000. It’s no real surprise that Roberta Wetzel won the ladies Pax class in her Miata, but the ladies class driver that arguably had the most fun and improved the most was Debbie Simmons in her BMW Z3. Debbie knocked 20 seconds off her first run before the end of the day and she was giving that BMW hell. We need to slap a No Fear sticker on the back of her helmet this month. In F Stock Rodney Brown and his Mustang whipped up on the Thunder-bird driven by Robert Wurzbach and Eric Veenkant. This was Eric’s maiden autocross and I don’t think he would have rather been doing ANYTHING else. H Stocks Boomer Savanh’s magic he works with his Civic may have faded a little this month. He still managed to win the class by 1.1 seconds over David Browns Prelude and the Mini driven by Mike Dorohoff but it’s the closest any two cars have gotten to him in my memory. Chris Ruesga has been winning STS pretty regularly in his Celica and he did it again on this day but Christopher Fountain’s Neon was less than a second back. Michael Weaver, Clint Morrow and Josh Watson were all within striking distance of the top spot.

(Continued from page 6)

A challenge was issued to the local S2000 club and two of the members battled it out in ASP. Jeremiah Johnson thought he had it made against the senior member of the club but found him-self trailing Gerry Swetsky after only two runs. When the day ended Jeremiah took the honors by over 2.8 seconds. A third member of the club who had planned to run with us skipped the event and unfortunately rolled and totaled his car later in the day when a curb attacked his car. Luckily both he and his passenger survived the horrible crash. Jose Rodriguez and his Corvette showed no mercy to 350Z driver Carlo Sangalong in BSP. ESP had an odd mix of cars with Tom Vin-cent’s Firebird, Anthony Dimattia’s WRX, and Joseph Hodnett’s Mustang GT finishing in that order. All three cars were bunched up with only 1.3 seconds separating 1st from 3rd. In FSP Jim Lewis was getting pretty darned worried after 4 runs with his Scirocco trailing George Lowes VW. George wasn’t able to hold on and lost by a heartbreaking 0.172. Dan Brubaker and Paul Neal were again sharing Dan’s Celica and Dan was working hard to put it to Paul. He succeeded in out driving Paul on every run. We’d better watch these two Sunday because Paul isn’t going to take this without trying twice as hard to pay Dan back. A Mod’s Steve Fooshee managed to win the class while finishing off the tires on the car he shares with John Handy. Steve now has a real job in Birmingham and isn’t likely to be a regular with us in the future. His balls to the wall driving style and goofy laugh will be missed. Best of luck to you Steve. HELLO! Erin Bates hopped in Richard Felis’s DSR and set the overall FTD in B Mod! That’s right guys, we ALL got beaten by a girl again, and you know what? I like it. There’s a lot of talented female drivers out there and too few of them are enjoying our sport with us. The more often someone like Erin shows them how it can be done the more likely others are to try it. Good job Erin! Erin finished .786 ahead of Richard who in turn was .008 ahead of me. Eric Obrien and his wife Chandra and their Type R took first and 3rd in E Mod and with Kurt Winter and his RX7 slipping in-between the two of them. Talon driving Ed Curtis pulled off yet another win in S Mod beating Mustangs driven by Ron Raven, Daniel Mishoe, and Jimmy Mishoe in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th places with Jonathan Graham’s beautiful RX8 in 4th. S Mod 2 was a battle of four RX7’s taking on a lone 300ZX driven by Scott Stanley. When the smoke cleared all the mosquito’s were dead and the 300ZX was in 3rd with Danny Halloran 1st, Danny Simmons 2nd, Stan Simmons 4th, and Chris Simmons 5th. The Solo I at Skelly Field may well be my favorite event of the year. It’s a very laid back and re-laxing place to drive and it’s close to us and easy to get to. The speeds on the track are fairly quick with one blind turn actually taken by the quicker cars between 130 and 140 mph. It is an absolute blast to drive the course. It almost didn’t happen this year because of a lack of workers, and if not for a few loyal members of the Gulf Coast Region the event would have died a painful death. Bob Langham, Erin Bates, Robert Wurzbach, Ted Blaney, Ann Wurzbach, Richard Felis, Kevin Haugh, and of course Walt Wurzbach all worked long hours, often alone for hours at a time so this event could happen. Many thanks to these people who went out of their way to sup-port the Solo I contingency. It was greatly appreciated and only one of the group of workers (Walt) managed to get any seat time. At least two of these workers will be moving from workers to being competitors at Talladega. It’s safe to say that the Solo I bug has bitten them. Again this

year the fastest drivers all came from our region. The fastest time was set by Terry Green, fol-lowed by, Walt Wurzbach, Topper Jones, Garry Crook, Marianne Jones, and Tom Haugh. Any of you who have managed to keep reading the Pylon after seeing the bad news about Bron-son in Walt’s article are well aware that we are losing the site at least temporarily. Chances are good that we’re losing it for good. All hope is not lost however and we are working hard with the military to secure another site similar to Bronson. Since we are losing the site there is the po-tential for a few people to want to get the most out of our remaining time and possibly play a lit-tle. Let me assure you that we will be at least as strict as we have been in the past and no goof-ing off or horseplay will be tolerated at all. We want to continue in the good graces of the mili-tary so that we can get another site. Because of the stupid actions of one person with another club that uses Bronson we almost were unable to even use the site this month. You hear me preach about doing everything right to protect our privileges and one person almost screwed it up for all the clubs. Granted this person was not one of our members thank goodness, but it just shows how easy it is to mess up a good thing. While it’s true that July will very likely be our last event at Bronson I am still very hopeful that we will be back on military property very soon. In the meantime we are certainly open to suggestions for other sites we might be able to use. Topper Jones

had driven on Saturday only, leaving Sunday just for Kevin. This was due to the difficulty in adjusting the harnesses for both drivers. Tom had the misfortune to break a suspension bolt, thus not getting in all of his runs. The results are posted on Alabama Region’s web site – www.alscca.org . This was another outstanding event by Alabama Region, they will be hosting another Solo I in September. Talking about Alabama Region, they will be hosting a double SARRC at Barber on July 10-11. If you have a chance, this is the one to go and watch. The track is beautiful and you will get to watch Zal Chitty in his Alfa! Other news about Racers, word has been going around that Mr. Mercedes, Bill Trinchitella, has bought a DIRT TRACK CAR. What is this

world coming to? He who always polished not only his race car, but his trailer too – now driv-ing a dirt tracker – how will he ever keep it clean! Have fun Bill, and you still owe me that column about circle trackers that always turn left, maybe now you will have some more in-put! Ann and I are leaving on a 5 week va-cation from SCCA. This will be the first time in many years that I will miss an event, please give Allen Givens and Topper all your support for the July event. FMOD: You just have to race open wheel, but don’t have a lot of cash. Start this season with a FMOD SoloVee. With the right driver and setup you will finish well above the average time for each event. I paid $2,500 for the car. I destroyed the engine early last year. I bought a new 1600cc engine block, crank, bearings, crankshaft gears, flywheel, etc. (approximately $1,000 in new parts). Engine is ready to be cleaned and assembled. Buy the car as a roller and all the new engine parts/etc. and reassemble the car. I will sell the car, as a roller, for $1,100 OBO and the new engine parts, etc. for ninety percent of the sales receipt, approximately $900. Digital pic-tures emailed upon request. Call Rod 850-939-3391 home, 850-499-8027 cell or email [email protected]. TRAILER: I have an enclosed trailer to haul your race car. I bought the trailer to haul my FMOD and AMOD car’s asking $2,900. Digital pictures emailed upon request. Call Rod 850-939-3391 home, 850-499-8027 cell or email [email protected].
