Promoting clubyourand really get to know theircustomer: the squash player.

The sport of squash boomed inthe 70's and 80's. That era hasgone and probably won't return.

Our sport is just one of themany choices available topeople to play. We are not justcompeting with alternativesports but sports who have thecapacity to invest heavily inmarketing and promotion.

From a business perspectivemany owners are simplyreactive and increase the priceto survive. This has thepotential to deter newcustomers because the pricemay appear excessive or theysimply don't feel they are gettingsufficient time on court for theprice (value for money).

Whilst a marketing plan isprobably ideal for each specificlocation many owners simplydon't have the skills to do itthemselves or the money toinvest in a detailed analysis.

Some simple steps to take thatwon't break the bank are todevelop a logo (brand), developa website (or a Facebook Page)and build a year of activities topromote to existing customers.

For future customers it isimportant that every clubseriously look at building ajunior development program .

There are many low coststrategies to employ and sure itdoes take a little effort to buildthat calendar of events ... but itsworth it.

The clubs that are doing well inNR adopt this strategy andprosper. Others sadly look atalternative solutions like turningcourts into something else toincrease the return oninvestment.

Whilst this is totallyunderstandable such strategieshave the capacity to destroy oursport.

This Newsletter is acommitment of the NRCommittee to promote our greatsport to the squash players ofNR (the customer) that there isrecognition and that there aremany activities around NR thatthey can participate in. In turnthere are some wonderful flowon benefits to our customers, community and the sport.

As part of this story we wouldlike to encourage you to getinvolved in

Mackay's returnedhome recently to visit family andcatch up with the current crop of

juniors.

Hindle brought with him ato demonstrate its training

benefits to club officials and the kids.

In short the features a60 ball capacity, anti jam ball feedingmechanism with thermostaticallycontrolled temperature to mimic matchconditions.

Hindle ran three, hour long coachingsessions with the ball machine. He wasable to concentrate 100% on analysing aplayer's technique as opposed to feedingand analysing.

The did the feeding tothe same spot repeatedly and at varyingspeeds.

The was well receivedwith Mackay and Moranbah clubs set toinvest in one each.

Junior Pathwaythe ball to the back of the court.

The player seeksregular competition andgenerally s inhouse at their clubAs the junior improves his/herskills they may then aspire torepresent their club or school.

In a bid to find greatercompetition most players beginattending in abid toand to gain selection for theirRegional Team ( ).

these juniorqualifiers are to everyoneregardless of what results theyhave previously or thetype of competitions they haveplayed in at their club or school.

Once a player gets a RegionalRanking they are well and trulyon the development path. Theyare usually hooked on the sportand are then encouraged torepresent their Region at theState Championships (QJC).

A player competes atthe QJC and establishes a StateRanking. At this level a playermay also be striving torepresent their school at theState Secondary SchoolsChampionship and their State atthe Trans Tasman SchoolsChampionship (QLD NSW NZ).

There is also another Nationalevent called the AJO (AustralianJunior Open Championship)which occurs around Easter thatplayers should strive to competeat as well. The AJO givesplayers an opportunity to getinternational competition onhome soil.

At both the AJC and AJO anumber of players are selectedto join the National Talent Squad(NTS).

Once in the NTS there is anexpectation the player will nowcompete in Open events to builda world ranking. The idea hereis for these juniors to competeagainst seniors and learn todeal with much more pressure.

Australia desperatelyneeds to unearth freshjunior talent and develop

those players to ultimatelyrepresent Australia at the WorldJunior Championships.

A player's progression along thepathway is identified bycompeting at various levels anddemonstrating a capacity tohandle the standard of play ateach specific level.

Whilst not an exact science aplayer should be striving toachieve a at thevarious levels: Regional, Stateand National to be consideredhighly competent at such levels.

A player should strive to firstlyestablish a ranking at eachlevel, followed by a Top 10ranking and finally, a Top 4ranking.

Juniors develop and progress atdifferent rates. Some are moreathletic or gifted and rise to thetop of their age group veryquickly. Others have to findtheir feet and progress at aslower rate.

Some need to get fitter or getsome additional skill training. Most juniors benefit from regulartraining and competition.
