Directions: Read the passage carefully and choose the bestanswer to each question out of the four alternatives. "The history of science is the real history of mankind."In this striking epigram a nineteenth century writer linksscience with its background. Like most epigrams, its powerlies in emphasising by contrast an aspect of truth whichmay be easily overlooked. In this case it is easy to overlookthe relations between science and mankind and to treatthe former as some abstract third party. which cansometimes be praused for its beneficial influences, butfrequently and conveniently blamed for the horrors of war.Science and mankind cannot be divorced from time to timeat men's convenience. Yet we have seen that, inspite ofcountless opportunities of improvement, the openingyears of the present period of civilisation have beendominated by international conflict. Is this the inevitableresult of the progress of science or does the fault lieelsewhere?

has made war horrible

is what man has made it

the good and bad uses of science reflect the characterof man

4. The writer implies that international conflict is the resultof:-

faulty relations between nations

human weaknesses

invention of deadly weapons

Read the following poem and answer the questions that

follow:-

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit be vines that round the thatch-eaves run;

To bend with appels the moss’d cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the ground, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease;

For summer has o’erbrimm’d their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?

Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find

Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,

Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;

Or on a half-reap’d forrow sound asleep,

Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook

Spares the next swath and all it twined flowers;

And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep

Steady thy laden head across a brook;

Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,

Thou watchest the last oozings, hours by hours.

Where are songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?

Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,-

While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day

And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;

Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn

Among the river-sallows, borne aloft

Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;

And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;

Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft

The redbreast whistles from a garden-croft;

And gathering swallows twitter in the skies

What is the end rhyme of the first stanza?

abab cde dcce abab cdcd efg

abab cde cdde abba abba cde

The end rhyme of the scond and third stanzas is:-

abab cdcd efg abab cde cdde

abab cde dcce abba abab cde
