Bibliography Primary Sources Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421 (1962) Engel v. Vitale made teacherled prayer in schools unconstitutional. This was the first step towards the disaffiliation of prayer and schools, and I compared it with the later cases including prayer. Epperson v. Arkansas, 393 U.S. 97 (1968) Epperson v. Arkansas involved an Arkansas law prohibiting the teaching of Darwin's theory of evolution. I compared this case both with other cases relating to religious texts and other cases relating to unconstitutional laws. Everson v. Board of Education of Ewing Township, 330 U.S. 1 (1947) Everson v. Board of Education of Ewing Township was a conflict between a taxpayer and a law providing transportation to both public and private schools. I analyzed how this case began the separation of church and state and used it as a foundation for comparison between cases. Lee v. Weisman, 505 U.S. 577 (1992) Lee v. Weisman forbid a prayer from being led at school graduations. I related this case to Engel v. Vitale and Lemon v. Kurtzman, as this case established a fourth prong for the Lemon Test. Lemon v. Kurtzman, 403 U.S 602 (1971) Lemon v. Kurtzman decided whether private religious educators could be paid by the superintendent. This case was referenced often in other court files, and it helped me gain a deeper understanding of the other cases I examined. Lemon also set up a rule which helped decide many cases afterward. McCollum v. Board of Education, 333 U.S. 203 (1948) McCollum v. Board of Education was an argument between a school parent and the school's board of education. This case decided whether religious classes could be held on public school grounds. I compared it with others as the first direct separation of church from state. Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, 530 U.S 290 (2000) Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe was the most recent case I researched, and it decided whether studentled prayers were permitted at football games. I analyzed it with connections to Lee v. Weisman and Engel v. Vitale, as all three cases involved prayer in schools. School District of Abington Township v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203 (1963) School District of Abington Township v. Schempp detached Bible readings from schools. I analyzed this as a major step towards the general separation of church and state. Stone v. Graham, 449 U.S. 39 (1980) Stone v. Graham held a law requiring the posting of the Ten Commandments in every classroom unconstitutional. I primarily compared this case to School District of Abington Township v. Schempp, and identified that it was decided through
