FIRST QUARTER

Kentucky Shakespeare Kentucky $600Staging Shakespeare ResidencyFounded in 1949, Kentucky Shakespeare currently serves 108,000+ people annually through the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Central Park, education programs in schools, public performances and community outreach. With this grant, Kentucky Shakespeare was able to travel to Paul G. Blazer High School in Ashland, KY, to hold 1- to 2-hour sessions each day for three days, during which the students involved worked through a rehearsal process using Shakespearean text to create a staged, student-driven performance piece. This program provided exposure to the arts for English and drama students who, because of a school spending freeze, would otherwise not have been able to experience such an opportunity. Funded by the John R. and Donna S. Hall Fund.

SECOND QUARTER

Cabell-Huntington Coalition for the Homeless West Virginia $800Let’s Get DigitalThe Cabell-Huntington Coalition for the Homeless was founded with the belief that everyone deserves access to adequate food, clothing, shelter and healthcare. Harmony House provides those basic resources, along with housing and employment support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Cabell and Wayne counties. Announcements and other necessary information were previously distributed through multitudinous flyers, resulting in confusion and missed messages. This grant provided funds to purchase a Smart TV and mount to be used as a digital message board, reducing the need for printed flyers and centralizing information. Funded, in part, by the WV NIP Endowment Fund.

Cammack Children’s Center West Virginia $3,000Cammack Center for SustainabilityCammack Children’s Center is a state facility that houses and educates students with a wide range of issues including truancy and Child Protective Services cases. The Center strives to provide a homelike setting where the youth can grow, develop skills and become productive members of society. These grant funds helped to purchase a greenhouse kit for STEM education. Funded, in part, by the WV NIP Endowment Fund.

American Red Cross Southwest West Virginia West Virginia $1,500Home Fire Campaign in Wayne and Cabell CountiesTogether with partners, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign combines grassroots neighbor-to-neighbor engagement and comprehensive marketing and public relations outreach to

decrease injuries and needless loss of life from home fires. The Campaign focuses on populations more vulnerable to home fires by providing lifesaving fire prevention and preparedness information and tools, as well as making home visits. With these grant funds, the Red Cross purchased and installed smoke alarms in low-income Wayne County neighborhoods. Funded, in part, by the WV NIP Endowment Fund.

Ironton in Bloom Ohio $3,800Ironton in Bloom Downtown Public Floral Maintenance InitiativeIronton in Bloom has developed a downtown floral and landscape initiative with the primary purpose of reestablishing pride and ultimately reinvestment in the City of Ironton. That project started in a small area of downtown 10 years ago and has now grown to include several city revitalization areas. Ironton in Bloom has decided to provide watering and floral maintenance services in house. This grant helped to purchase necessary tools and equipment to complete watering and maintenance tasks.

The Wild Ramp West Virginia $3,800Rolling Ramp: Incentives and Education for Healthy Eating in the Tri-StateThe Wild Ramp seeks to support local farmers and food entrepreneurs by connecting them with resources for growth and development and to ensure that consumers get healthy, locally sourced food. In partnership with the SNAP benefit program, The Wild Ramp launched a mobile market called the Rolling Ramp to provide fresh, local foods and promote healthful eating in low-income areas, where food access is limited because of location and transportation. These grant funds provided a portion of The Wild Ramp’s required match to obtain SNAP funds for this program. Funded, in part, by the WV NIP Endowment Fund.

THIRD QUARTER

Buddy’s Sensory Exchange Kentucky $5,000Central Park Sensory GardenBuddy’s Sensory Exchange serves special needs children and their families by providing specialized equipment to low-income families and support groups for families and caregivers. In pursuance of this mission, the organization worked to create a Sensory Garden in Central Park in order to provide a safe space for special needs children in the midst of one of Ashland’s busiest attractions. This grant helped purchase equipment and materials needed to complete this project. Funded, in part, by the Putnam Agency Fund.

City of Ironton Ohio $1,766Rotary Fountain ImprovementsThe City of Ironton and the Ironton Rotary Club work together to maintain the Rotary Fountain located downtown at Third and Center streets. This grant helped update the public water feature by purchasing a new pump and underwater lighting.

Kiwanis Day Care Center West Virginia $4,584New PlaygroundThe Kiwanis Day Care Center is the oldest continuously operating day care in West Virginia. Its 25-year-old playground equipment was recently inspected and failed to meet current safety codes. The center received a large grant to purchase new playground equipment but was required to raise matching funds to cover other expenses of the project. This grant provided matching funds for the new playground. Funded, in part, by the WV NIP Endowment Fund.

Lily’s Place West Virginia $3,720Baby VitalsLily’s Place provides medical and therapeutic care to infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, while offering support and education to their families. Some of the center’s medical equipment was inadequate for the unique needs of the babies served by the program. This grant helped purchase a digital scale and vital signs monitor. Funded, in part, by the Neal Family Fund for Health and Wellness.

Tri-State Stem+M Early College High School Tri-State $3,200Robotics Component in Engineering PathwayThe STEM+M High School provides educational opportunities for students interested in pursuing math and science careers. The engineering career pathway includes basic engineering courses and utilizes robotics to provide hands-on learning experiences. This grant helped purchase two robotics kits for the engineering career pathway courses.

FOURTH QUARTER

Hillcrest-Bruce Mission Kentucky $1,698Old Freezer ReplacementsHillcrest-Bruce Mission was founded in 1971 and has been distributing food donations and basic supplies for over 45 years. When the food bank delivers food to the Mission, the Mission must store it until it can be distributed to its clients. Its freezers were 20+ years old and unable to keep perishable foods at the temperature required by the health code. This grant helped the Mission purchase two new freezers. Funded, in part, by the Putnam Agency Fund.

The Big Idea Camp Corp Tri-State $3,217Digital Expansion into Ohio and West VirginiaThe Big Idea Camp Corp was founded to encourage leadership and character development of local students, with programs currently operating in the Ashland, Boyd and Fairview school systems. Because this program is easily integrated by school personnel and has shown results in terms of reduction in discipline referrals, other area schools are eager to adopt the program. Originally, Big Idea Camp staff and volunteers personally presented each monthly lesson at each participating school. This grant helped purchase items necessary to film the monthly lessons so they may be shared with Lawrence (OH), Cabell (WV) and Wayne (WV) county schools, building Big Idea Camp Corp’s capacity to impact even more students in the Tri-State area.

First United Methodist Church KentuckyFBO Aspire! Conservatory of Fine & Performing Arts $2,400

Technical Advancement in Learning ToolsAspire! Conservatory of Fine & Performing Arts is a ministry of First United Methodist Church. It has entered its fourth year of providing high-quality arts education and experiences to children in the community and is currently serving over 180 students. With these grant funds, Aspire! was able to purchase six iPads to be used by music, art and theatre instructors to utilize note reading and rhythm practice applications, share with students the work of famous artists without the purchase of costly resources and conduct research for set and costume design for theatrical performances. Funded, in part, by the John R. and Donna S. Hall Fund.

Marshall University Research Corporation West Virginia FBO Robert C. Byrd Institute $1,437

Maker Vault ExpansionSince its dedication in spring 2016, the RCBI’s Maker Vault has been an oasis for entrepreneurs, hobbyists, small business owners and individuals with an interest in new technologies. It provides the community with space to experiment, develop and learn through self-led projects. To ensure the makerspace is ADA compliant and to expand the facility’s capacity to meet the growing demand from makerspace users, RCBI plans to convert an additional section of its Huntington headquarters into makerspace. These funds will help purchase a new Glowforge Laser and Glowforge Laser Air Filter to cut and engrave materials ranging from wood to glass to leather.
