Design and Implementation of Developmentally Appropriate Instruction

    Explanation of the Standard:

An early childhood special education teacher must understand how to use the individual family serviceplan or the individual education program to design and implement developmentally appropriateinstruction for children that have developmental delays or disabilities or medical conditions.

    Description of Supporting Artifacts:

The first artifact that I included in this standard is a power point presentation and paper that Ideveloped upon researching the curriculum Bank Street. The second artifact is a general view of severaldifferent social skills curriculums that could be used in the field. Another artifact that I have included isan assignment that I did on Attention Deficit / Hyper-Activity Disorder. The last artifact that I included isa Functional Behavior Assessment that I completed on a child, along with the contract that wedeveloped.

    Analysis:

The first two artifacts that I have included show some of the different curriculum that is out there that ateacher would be able to use with his students. It is important for a teacher to be able to know a varietyof different curriculum that is available for his students. It is important to know what exactly needs to be designed and implemented from the child sIndividualized Education Program. The third artifact is some very specific strategies that could be usedwith a child that has attention deficit / hyper-activity disorder. These strategies could help a child beable to strengthen impulse control, develop ability to sit and attend for longer periods of time and focuson task at hand, which would be goals that would be in a child s individual education program who hasattention deficit / hyper-activity disorder. There are many children that have behavior goals in their individual education program. Knowing how touse certain tools, such as a functional behavior assessment, can help a teacher be able to find theantecedent and develop a contract for that child in order to diminish the behavior. Synthesis / Interpretation:

I have gotten a sense of the many different curriculums that are out there. It is important to understandeach child s individual goals and objectives on their individual family service plan or individual educationprogram in order to know which curriculum or strategies would work for that child. Each child is going to

learn different so know a vast number of strategies is going to make a teacher that much more effectivein the field. Many child exhibits behavior problems and it is important to be able to address thosebehaviors with the child and the importance of trying to diminish behaviors that are negatively affectingthe child s education or other children s education around that child. In the future I will continue tolearn about more curriculums and be willing to try new strategies that will benefit the learning of thechild. I will also continue to learn new strategies that will help diminish behavior problems in theclassroom.
