    Reflective Statement

    Artifact: Grade Book

    Technology STANDARD 5 - Productivity Tools

    The competent teacher will integrate advanced features of technology-based productivitytools to support instruction, extend communication outside the classroom, enhance

    classroom management, perform administrative routines more effectively, and become

    more productive in daily tasks

    5A. Knowledge Indicator - The competent teacher knows advanced features of technology-

    based productivity tools.

    5C. uses spreadsheets for analyzing, organizing, and displaying numeric data graphically.

    5D. designs and manipulates databases and generates customized reports.

    5H. uses features of applications that integrate word processing, database, spreadsheet,

    communication, and other tools.

    This standard is about how I, as a teacher, use advanced technology tools to aide in the

    effectiveness of how my classroom is run. This means that I will use technology to help with my

    productivity and efficiency, my communication outside of the classroom, my administrative

    routines, and my daily tasks within the classroom. More specifically, I will use organized

    spreadsheets to keep numerical data; I will use databases to create custom reports for both

    students and parents; and I will utilize computer applications in maintaining student information

    and communication.

    2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of thestandard.

    The artifact that I chose for this standard is a copy of the grade book software that I have been

    using during my student observation placement. This software is an online-based software that

    allows the teacher to keep an accurate and organized spreadsheet of the students grades. On the

    spreadsheet, the students are identified by both their student ID number as well as their name, so

    if grades are posted, the names can simply be removed so the students are aware of how they are

    doing in the class. Each assignment has a number that corresponds with a key at the bottom of

    the chart so that each assignment can be identified. When using this online Report Card

    software, submitting the students grades is quick, easy, professional, and organized. It makes it

    easy as a teacher to check on how the students are doing, and the process of inputting the

    information is much more efficient than using a handwritten grade book. Also, if the parents

    need to be made aware of how their student is doing in the class, it is easy to copy the

    spreadsheet into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, and send just that students progress over to the

    parents.

    B If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

    your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

    This artifact has been used in my practice. It has been so easy and fast to use within the

    classroom. I think that if I were to continue to use this artifact in my future classroom, I would

    update the parents on how their student is doing more frequently so that there is more open

    communication with the guardians about the students classroom progress. I think I would also

    post the grades of the students each week so that they can keep up on their progress as well. Not

    only that, but it could be used as a classroom management tool in allowing the students to

    receive positive points if they turned in all of their homework as well.

    4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in aDiverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

    This tool helped me to learn to function in a more technologically advanced classroom. When I

    have my own classroom, it seems as though very little will be done by hand anymore, so in

    transitioning to a more diverse and advanced society, it will be important for me to keep up with

    the technological advances and remain efficient in my administrative tasks as a teacher. This

    will allow me to continue to provide for the needs of my students in a way that is relevant and

    appealing to them as well as their families.
