Lec, Elan Series Refrigerators, Refrigerators/Freezers and FreezersThe Lec range of domestic refrigerators, freezers and fridge freezers are practical to use (all withreversible doors) and economical to run (all ‘A’ rated). The refrigerators all have adjustable safety-glassshelving, salad drawers and door storage. Both under-bench refrigerators featured are slimline (500mmwide), one of which (R1205W) has an ice box.

The fridge freezer models include adjustable safety-glass shelves, twin salad drawers and deep doorstorage. The freezer compartments have either solid drawers or a combination of wire baskets andshelves, all with clear retaining fronts.

Minor Engineering WorkJencons-PLS recognises that many customers require modifications to their refrigerators and freezers.In some cases the height of the bench can be a limiting factor in the choice of unit, sometimes accessports are required for introducing temperature sensors, power leads, plugs, piping etc..

Following tests performed by us, on a variety of refrigeration units, we have found that, for instance, evena thin-wired thermocouple can cause rapid ice build-up within a freezer. In most cases the wire is normallysqueezed between the door seal and carcass – this can cause warm, moist air to enter the freezer causingit to ‘ice-up’. The answer is to introduce the thermocouple through a custom access port, then to sealaround the cable within the port (using proprietary mastic or other stoppers).

Access ports can be made to suit the size of probe to be inserted and, within the limitations imposed bythe construction of the unit, they can be positioned to suit the user. Please note: access ports cannot befitted to ULT (-80°C) freezers, nor chest freezers.

We have listed below the most common modifications to fridges, freezers, incubators and otherequipment. Modifications can only be performed prior to delivery and are only made to equipmentpurchased from Jencons-PLS. The modification must be ordered at time of equipment purchase.

CO2 and LN2 back-up systems During operation, addition of CO2 or LN2 is pulsed, rather than continuous, allowing permeation of theentire freezer cabinet. Using CO2, temperatures between -55°C and -70°C can be maintained whilst withLN2 temperatures down to -85°C can be achieved. This ensures even distribution of the cooling effectand avoids excessive consumption on coolant. Bench Top, ULT Freezers to -80°CThree models are available, each with a differenttemperature range from -10°C to -40°C, from -30°C to -50°C and from -70°C to -80°C.

The cabinet casing of all three models is made ofgalvanised, electrostatically white-enamelled steelsheet. Foamed-in-place polyurethane givesexcellent thermal insulation and is free of CFCs.

The inner chamber is constructed from stainlesssteel and is easy to clean. The unit is fitted withtwo doors (inner and outer) with a special seal toprevent ice build-up. A security lock in theinsulated, double-sided outer door preventsunauthorised use.

The microprocessor-driven temperature controllerhas a digital display (LED).

Each unit is fitted with an electronic audio-visualalarm system, independent of the power supply.There is remote alarm contact to an in-housealarm system through a relay and a 10 mV/1 Koutput for a temperature recorder.

An inventory control system is available for eachof the three freezers. It consists of two stainlesssteel racks and 20 fibreboard boxes. Each box canhold up to 100x2ml Cryovials or 1.5ml Eppendorftubes.

Coldstore Outers (Racks)Coldstore outers are configured to take either trays with divisions orboxes. They can be manufactured in lightweight anodised aluminium(normally silver, but other colours such as blue, red and gold are alsoavailable). Alternatively, they can be made of stainless steel, althoughtaller racks tend to be heavy to lift.

The height of the apertures and hence the number of shelves isgoverned by the height of the tubes/boxes to be stored. For multi-purpose use, racks with adjustable rather than fixed shelves can beordered. There are several different types of storage units as follows:

Horizontal Outers for Upright FreezersFront opening, these units are normally quitedeep and therefore tend to be used toaccommodate trays with divisions. Boxes canbe stored but for ease-of-access, werecommend placing them in open plaintrays within the outer.

Side-opening Outers for Upright FreezersDesigned to take cryogenic boxes of 133x133mm, these outers have ahandle at the front. Side-opening outers can also be designed for othersizes of box and are the favoured option if you wish to maximisestorage capacity for boxes only.

Vertical Outers for Chest FreezersDesigned to accommodate trays or boxes of133x133mm, although other sizes can be configuredas required. Full height outers can be heavy to liftwhen fully laden, so we can also offer a range of half-height outers with stacking plates.

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable and have either alip or a draw bar to prevent boxes/ trays falling out. Asemi-circular cut out in the shelf can also be included toaid access/ removal of the tray/ box. Drop-down or bow handles andlabel holders can also be featured.

BinsBins are useful for storage of large numbersof microplates. They can have centraldivisions, label holders and handles at oneend or both ends. Lids can be included to

reduce frost build-up.

Racks for AutoracksCustom-made to fit into those left-over spaces!

Trays for Coldstore OutersTrays are custom-made to suit the sizeof coldstore outer. The standardheight is 34mm, but for tallertubes, either higher walls anddivisions can be constructed or adouble platform test tube rack can be used (particularly useful forstoring 15/50ml conical tubes). A higher front of 50mm to take ahandle can be requested. They can contain metal or plastic dividers ofthe appropriate size for the tubes being stored, or they can be empty(plain tray) to accommodate boxes or microplates.

The most common size of divisions requested are as follows; 12mm(cryovials), 13mm (1.5/2.0ml Eppendorfs), 14mm (cryovials with widercaps), 24mm (glass or plastic Bijoux bottles) and 30mm (Universals andskirted 50ml conicals).

Radio Alarm and Data Logging System for LaboratoryAccreditation The Jencons-PLS Radio Alarm System has been designed to monitor all types of medical/ laboratoryequipment including liquid nitrogen vessels, ULT freezers, bloodbank refrigeration, incubators andautoclaves, without the use of cables.

This system consists of a receiver unit, together with one/more transmitters which are connected toeither a temperature probe, a suitable data logger (using data logger interface connector) or volt freecontact. Alarm information can also be sent to a password protected web page where mobile messagingcan be setup (requires internet communications option).

Receiver Unit AS200RX

Communication The receiver can be connected to one type of communication unit. Using the internet communicationsoption the receiver will send alarm information to a password protected web page. A fuller descriptioncan be given on the web page for the transmitter unit number, e.g. “Unit 14” could be called “-80CFreezer Cancer Research Room 16, Temp Fault”. When an alarm is sent to the web page it will be dateand time stamped. The full history of alarms will be logged and cannot be deleted. The full alarmmessage can then be selectively text messaged to up to 10 mobiles or e-mails etc. Note: All alarm callslogged to an internet page and text messages will be charged at a premium charge telephone rate.

Alternatively, if simpler communications are required, the receiver can be connected to a speechdialler (SD1+).

Transmitter Alarm Unit ES100TX-1

Data Logging The transmitter can be connected to a data logger using DTX100 data logger interface connector. Thisgives the ability to locally log temperature, humidity, CO2 etc; with all the added features of the ES100TX-1 alarming and communications capability. 1. ES100TX-1 requires a PTX100 probe to monitor alarm temperature or a DTX100 tointerface with a data logger.

3. ES100TR is used to increase the distance between the transmitter and receiver. Onlyone should be used between the receiver and each transmitter. The system rangebetween transmitter and receiver is specified at 100m but, in practice, this distance canbe greater or smaller depending on the building construction and siting of units. MLS2000 Monitoring System Monitherm’s wire-free temperature monitoring system, the MLS2000, provides flexibility, stability andcomprehensive monitoring and reporting options.

Wireless monitoring has progressed enormously over the last 5 years and has enabled Monitherm todevelop the MLS2000 system to have a range of up to 250m from the receiver in most sites and toaccommodate up to 128 sensors.

This means that diverse sites can be covered with one system, even if a large number of sensors arerequired. There is also greater flexibility for users to move or add incubators, fridges or freezers, etc. and thesystem can be installed retrospectively into most premises with minimal installation costs and added to atany time.

Accreditation and compliance with GLP are pressing reasons for ensuring that all temperature relatedequipment is logged and alarmed independently to give 24/7 coverage and complete peace of mind.

The Monitherm Monitoring System is based on a Windows™ environment and can be networked withother computers to archive data.
