Programme overview Level 1 to 4
Credits 60 each level
Duration 24 weeks each level
Our English programme combines the use of a Core
Text and Special Interest classes with an individualised
learning programme where students are able to
undertake classes at the level they are at. This means
that they can take writing and other classes at the
level they are operating at, not the class level which
may be lower or higher. Combined with our Friday
excursions and Study Skills programmes these classes
take a holistic approach to education and cater each
student's individual needs.
Classes are current, student-centred and relevant
enough to cater for students interests. For example,
our morning classes may start with a discussion of a
newspaper article from the morning's paper or the
celebration of a particular festival or holiday from one
of the countries of the students.
After a short break, the students then practise their
integrated skills using a core text. In this way they
study vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, speaking
and listening in a particular context and on a particular
theme. This makes them more memorable and easier
to learn and retain
The last lessons of the day give students further
practice in the four skills as well as teaching students
more about New Zealand, colloquial English and
survival English.
General English programme overview
General English & IELTS Preparation
It is a full-time programme combining General English
with IELTS Preparation. Both General and Academic
IELTS are taught in this programme. General IELTS is
required for Immigration applications only and
Academic IELTS is used for acceptance into vocational
and university programmes.
As well as studying the four macro-skills of listening,
reading, speaking and writing, students study exam
techniques and strategies and each of the macro skills
are dissected to give students a full understanding of
the different types of questions used within each of
the skills.
Grammar and vocabulary skills will be an integral part
of this IELTS preparation course and regular mock tests
will be given so students can track their steady
improvement and know when to book for this test.
Diligent students may expect to go up one IELTS mark
by the end of a 12 week study.
Students will receive help to enrol for the external
IELTS test and will be given an intensive 2 hour private
lesson just prior to the test.
Students at New Zealand Certificate of English
Language Level 3 or equivalent are eligible to enter any
of the IELTS programmes.
