Dear Region 3,
Join me as I look ahead during these April showers, to the week of NTI when the excitement grows like May flowers as everyone anticipates Wednesday’s SuperSession in which the in-coming AACN President introduces his or her
theme to guide the Association through the next fiscal year. This year Clareen Wiencek will take center stage to share her vision and theme for her 2016-2017 Presidential year with over 7,500 nurses. It’s amazing to see that the association manages to keep her theme a secret up until that very moment in her presentation.
Let’s get psyched up for her reveal by looking back upon the themes since 2000. Recall your favorite theme-related chapter activities while completing the puzzles on page 4, solutions will be included with our June News.
Karen McQuillan remains at the helm until July 1st, 2016. Although each one of us has the remainder of our careers to plan, deliver, model, teach, and live “Courageous Care” our invitation to share our experiences with Karen lasts for only a few more months, may we each write to her today. Thank you Karen and Clareen for visiting Region 3 for multiple chapter events over the last two fiscal years.
Request the attendance of an AACN leader at your next chapter event HERE. I’d also like to give a shout-out to Christine Schulman, AACN’s incoming President-Elect for FY 16-17! As a AACN Board Member, Chris currently serves as the liaison between the Board and the Chapter Advisory Team.

Healthy Chapter Environments
Continuing with our Healthy Work Environment Standards, this issue we will apply the Effective Decision Making Standard to Chapters
Chapter leaders must be valued and committed partners
in making policy and leading organizational operations.
A chapter with a Healthy Work Environment demonstrates Effective Decision Making by:
Considering all options
Knowing when and how to delegate
Working collaboratively and optimizing each BOD/chapter member’s competencies
Managing the chapter with fiscal responsibiity
Important Questions to Ask
What are your chapter’s processes for making data-driven decisions?
Who has decisional authority?
Are there identified norms for decisions that require Board approval vs. approved by a specific committee chair?
Has your chapter developed a strategic plan for the year with realistic goals?
Does your chapter have effective and productive BOD meetings?
Problem Solution
Clear processes for decision making
not in place.
Decisions made by chapter leaders must promote the mission and vision of the chapter.
Develop process for how the chapter will make and approve decisions:
Consensus vs. majority vote Vote in person vs. email BOD approval vs. committee chair approval
Refer to strategic plan, budget, and chapter policy when making decisions regarding chapter management. All of these items should be in writing and easily accessible.
Strategic Plan
Incomplete
Unrealistic goals
Responsible persons not identified
Not based on needs of chapter
members
Complete needs assessment of chapter members and review results.
Perform SWOT analysis to identify Strengths, Weakness-es, Opportunities, and Threats to chapter management and function.
Identify goals for the year based upon the results of the needs assessment.
Keep goals realistic and obtainable.

Healthy Chapter Environments: Effective Decision Making Cont...
Problem Solution
Strategic plan continued: Identify person responsible for each goal. Determine timeline for obtaining goal. Update board members and chapter members on pro-
gress to ensure accountability. Develop on-going evaluation process to ensure goals are
being met or if changes need to be made.
Ineffective BOD meetings Develop clear agenda for the meeting.
Send request for agenda items two weeks prior to the
meeting.
Send agenda to BOD members prior to the meeting.
Identify a timekeeper for the meeting.
Review AACN meeting norms.
Allow for members to have an opportunity to voice an
opinion or recommendation on decisions under considera-
tion.
Remember that mistakes are considered learning opportu-
nities.
RESPECT each member of the BOD.
Isolated decision making
- one person making all the decisions
Clarify role of each member of the BOD and review ex-
pectations of the chapter leadership team.
Review previously determined and approved decision-
making process developed by the BOD.
Best wishes to chapters with elections underway!
May you each recruit engaged members who are willing to serve
their communities by volunteering to join your chapter board of directors
and committing to ensure a Healthy Work Environment on a chapter level!
