SAWDC Aviation Cluster Travels to Wichita toLearn Workforce Strategies
Representatives from Airbus Final Assembly Line, VT MobileAerospace Engineering, AIDT, and the Alabama CommunityCollege System traveled to Kansas for a two-day visit withleaders from Wichita's aviation industry. Organized by SAWDCin partnership with the Workforce Alliance of South CentralKansas, both National Fund sites, the visit focused onidentifying successful practices, which could be replicatedlocally in order to prepare the region's workforce for careers inaviation. This included learning how to build effectivepartnerships between the aviation industry and local educatorsand career pathways for entry-level workers.
While in Wichita, the Region 7 delegation met with majoraviation employers, Spirit AeroSystems and Airbus, tounderstand how business leadership can improve theirworkforce and strengthen their community. The WorkforceAlliance of South Central Kansas, which served as SAWDC'shost throughout, provided an in depth view of its workassociated with PACES (Preparation for Advanced CareerEmployment System) - a strategy under the WIOA program thatworks to prepare central Kansas' manufacturing and aviationworkforce by investing in high demand skills and working withlocal employers to prepare individuals for work in manufacturingand aviation. Wichita State University, which serves as an example of asynergistic partnership between a public university and privatesector aviation employers. Finally, SAWDC representatives metwith Wichita Area Technical College to understand how industryand education work together to ensure that students arelearning the necessary skills to thrive on the job.

The Alabama Community College System and AIDT inpartnership with SAWDC hosted a Maritime ManufacturingCareer Day at the AIDT Maritime Training Center on Tuesday,March 7th. Three hundred high school students in careertechnical programs from Mobile and Baldwin County schoolsystems as well as Satsuma and Chickasaw participated.These students interacted with industry representatives fromAustal USA, Southern Company, Ingalls Shipbuilding,Performance Contractors, Mitternight Boilerworks, WESCO, andTechnical Training Aids (TTA) and gained first-hand knowledgeof the unique opportunities available close to home. Also onhand were training providers including Coastal AlabamaCommunity College and Bishop State as well as the NationalGuard.

And we're off! Planning is underway for the 8th annual SAWDCWorlds of Opportunity. The SAWDC WoO Steering Committee,led by new project managers, Karen Sock and Paige Roberts,met in March for the inaugural meeting. Carol Statter, the 2016WoO Chair, passed along her chairperson duties to SheriNaramore with Exxon Mobil and Carol Weaver with AlabamaPower - co-world leaders of the World of Energy.
