Philosophy & PracticeA change that redefines America’s understanding of what it is to be poor, and what needs to be done about poverty will significantly transform our nation’s response to poverty, treating it as the condition it is, not as a character flaw

In an organization it starts with Secret Shopper.

I secretly “shop” at my own company and at my competitor’s business. . .I do it regularly and on an on-going basis. I tracked phone wait times, waiting room wait times, response times for returned calls from the insurer and healthcare provider.

Action – Pilot Project – Welcome Home, Osborn• Returning Citizens project – A new paradigm, treating poverty as a

medical condition, was born.

• # served 150

• 3 year study reaching more than 200 returning citizens

• Recidivism rate 7%

• A study by PEW Charitable Trust Center indicated on average a 40% return within 3 years (2011)

• In 2013 cost in Michigan prisons was $93.65 per day or $34,183 year

• TTS cost at Matrix was $4.17 per day or $1,523 per client

• Our return on investment (ROI) was $89.48 per day / $32,660 per year

• Not including the economic benefits as a productive member of society

HOW?...........................TTS Implementation

By training an organization’s direct-care workers to coordinate care across multiple delivery systems;

By training administrators to support their direct-care workers to hold the community-based-already paid system accountable;

By training everyone across the organization that poverty is not a character flaw but a treatable condition;

And ensuring that clients, just like funders, are customers to be valued and respected

– outcomes for clients improve as does the culture of the organization and community as a whole. 13

Designing Quality Family and Community Engagement Program Services

OverviewPurpose: The grantee must integrate parent and family engagement strategies into all systems and program services to support family wellbeing and promote children’s learning and development. Programs are encouraged to develop innovative two-generation approaches that address prevalent needs of families across their program and leverage community partnerships or other funding sources.

Approach: During the off-site interview, the grantee will provide information about their strategy for integrating high-quality family engagement services into all areas of programming that are responsive to the needs of families. The grantee will have the opportunity to discuss the expected outcomes for families and how the program design supports achieving those outcomes. This section contains two areas for discussion: the grantee’s approach for collaborating with families and the grantee’s approach for providing services that strengthen parenting skills.

Diagnosis Poverty – a review

• Telling a story and to change, either by degrees or wholesale, the way we understand, think about, and respond to poverty.

• A new paradigm presented with the goal --a call to action; a call to respond.

• We must change the way our country responds to poverty through our government healthcare organizations, human services, faith-based entities, and educational programs
