• Long term trends are on following pages

• Professional Membership: 1902 • Increase of 79 since last RSAC (Jan 2011); back up to levels of 2010

summer• First increase since 2008 is continuing• All Sections show the increase

• Student Membership: 579• Decrease of 35 since last RSAC (Jan 2011) • All sections show the decrease

• Educator Associate Membership: 241• Increase of 10 since last RSAC (Jan 2011)• Upturn continuing• All Sections participating, one Section is not dominating; although Iowa

tends to be lagging

Professional Membership Observations• Region V membership has been trending up slightly since 1997, but has

been showing a decrease since 2008; this is the first uptick since 2008 • All Sections have all shown decrease over the past year, only one showed an

increase over the past six months• Short term trends over the past six months:

• Iowa + 4 • Rocky Mountain + 51• St. Louis +12• Twin Cities + 12• Wichita + 2

• Long term trends: • Regional membership has an uptick which reverses downturn which has been

consistent since 2008. – Rocky Mountain show largest uptick of all the sections – Wichita holding steady over past 9 months, but long term drop– St. Louis stabilizing after long term slide trends – Iowa, and Twin Cities have less pronounced down trend

• Continuing focus on calling “drop”, “new” and “transfer” members• Sections not fond of having dedicated membership drives, prefer to

concentrate on associating good meetings with new members

tending to remain constant

• Continued working the logistics of next year’s student conference and utilized lessons learned from 2010; occurred 6-8 April and was very successful!

• Updated to the By-laws in work• Lost 2 active officers and Sridher, Section Chair is working to find replacements

Section Highlights

• St. Louis• Family Movie Night 18 February “The Wonder of It All” and provided the What

impact did walking on the moon have on the few men who actually experienced the miracle? This documentary is composed of the personal interviews of 6 astronauts who walked on the moon and their recollections of the events, each other and the impact on their lives

• 17 March Dinner Meeting “General Aviation: Past, Present and Future” presented by Ramesh Agarwal, William Palm Professor of Engineering Washington University in St Louis

• Family Movie Night 15 April “For All Mankind”; In recognition and celebration of 50 year anniversary of the launch of the Space Race Al Reinert's acclaimed documentary on The Apollo program. Unique experience, as the only voices heard in the film are those of the astronauts and mission control. Tremendous film and photos from astronauts and NASA collection, much rarely seen footage

• Family Movie Night May 20 “Twelve O’Clock High” 1949 WWII drama featuring Gregory Peck as a tough general who whips a bomber unit suffering from low morale into fighting shape. Actual combat footage is used in this tense war drama

Section Highlights• Twin Cities

• By-law update submitted to headquarters and awaiting approval by RSAC• Participated in “AutoSnowPlow competition” with Institute of Navigation (ION) on

29 Jan followed by Movie Madness with five IMAX films “Aerospace films of Spaceship Earth” then if you still have energy dinner/social hour at Pat McGovern’s Pub

• National Engineer’s Week tour and dinner meeting at Ballistic Recovery Systems along with other activities

• Two members from St Louis participated in CVD• Colleagues at INCOSE (The International Council on Systems Engineering) invited

Twin Cities to participate in learning about Systems Engineering programs • Hosted “Bowling for Ballots” for next year’s council and results announced in April• Work continue on the section’s RC Aircraft; weather has not permitted the

expected “Fly-in”• Supported the Aerospace Family Night at the Farnsworth Aerospace Magnet

School• Dinner Meeting with Gene Austin occurred on 5 May• Invited by the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers to participate in

Engineers Night with the St Paul Saints• May Awards Night Planned

Actions/Issues for RSAC

• Under New Business• The faculty advisors, based upon discussions with the students, want to know if

AIAA can provide the judging criteria (paper and oral) to the students prior to the conference. It could be posted on the website and those that are interested would find it available.

• The students want feedback! This is extremely important to them! For the students to find value/benefit (where have we heard this statement???!!), they need meaningful feedback and would like the scores along with the comments (both paper and oral). Why is the policy to only provide the comments?
