GO Transit Service Expansion November 2016
2
Today
3
Tomorrow: Modern, Integrated Network
4
Metrolinx is embarking on a massive transformation of the existing GO rail system to provide:
• Four times the number of trips outside of weekday rush-hour periods, including evenings and weekends.
• Twice the number of trips during weekday rush-hour periods. • Line extensions to new communities.
GO Transit Expansion
• Bringing new transit options and new levels of service doesn’t come easy.
• Metrolinx is undertaking one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America.
• There is community-level disruption required to build a region-wide, integrated transit network.
5
Infrastructure Needs for GO Expansion
What’s going on in your neighbourhood
• Expanding GO Service as part of a rapid transit network – Future 15-minute electrified service; currently half-hour in your area
• Infrastructure needed to provide this level of service – Add a 4th Track
– Widen 4 rail bridges
– Modify Danforth Station – Planning Study underway
– Build Electrification Infrastructure (e.g. overhead catenary system)
• New GO/SmartTrack stations announced – Don Yard/Unilever (between Cherry Street and Eastern Avenue)
– Gerrard (in the vicinity of Carlaw Avenue)
6
Lakeshore East Service
TODAY FUTURE
7
115 daily trips (between Don River and Scarborough GO Station)
408 daily trips
Service Planning and Phasing is still not complete
Beginning the Conversation
• First round of public meetings in February/March
• Ongoing briefings for local community groups such as the Danforth East Community Association and the Danforth Village Residents’ Association
• On the ground – face-to-face, door-to-door outreach by the local Community Relations Specialist

11
Electrification - Power Supply & Distribution
• Metrolinx and Hydro One are EA co-proponents
12
Electrification - Overhead Contact System (OCS)
• The span between OCS supports ranges from 50 to 65 metres.
13
Cantilevers: one foundation required Portals: two foundations required
Electrification - Bridge Modifications
14
Location: Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA
Electrification - Pedestrian Bridges Reinforce or Replace

Wallace Ave. Drury Lane
PAPE Mooregate Ave / Tara Ave
Electrification-Lakeshore East Corridor Traction Power Facilities
16
Electrification – Stouffville Corridor Traction Power Facilities
17
Electrification - Visual/Aesthetics
18
Electrification - Tree/Vegetation Removals
Vegetation/Tree Removal may be required to : • Minimize the risk of tree limbs
falling on the track or overhead wires.
• Secure the safety of maintenance workers when working in an electrified environment.
• Maintain the safety of our customers and neighbours.
19
Noise Assessment – Approach
• When building new infrastructure, Metrolinx models noise
• Noise modeling compares current noise levels to 2025 service levels
• Sensitive receptors are identified such as residences, hospitals, daycares etc.
• When noise is expected to increase >5dB at sensitive receptors, then mitigation is considered
• Mitigation could include noise walls, berms, rail dampeners etc.
