REGIONAL WRAP-UP DESCRIPTION: This lesson is to "wrap-up" the unit on U.S. regions and location of states. The students will have spent 6-8 weeks covering material and exploring the regions prior to this lesson. The students will use knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, and evaluation to complete the lesson. GRADE LEVEL: Primary LEARNING OUTCOMES: When my students finish this lesson, they will be able to: 1. Locate a particular region including the Western U.S., the North Central U.S., the Southern U.S., and the Northeastern U.S., using the regional demarcations in the 1990 Rand McNally Classroom Atlas. TEKS Alignment - 113.15.b.7.A-C - understands the concept of regions; 2. Examine a region and locate a particular state within it. TEKS Alignment - 113.16.b.7.C - locate on a map important political features in the U.S. [including] regions such as the Northeast, the Midwest, and the southwest; 3. Identify physical and cultural aspects of the different regions. TEKS Alignment - 113.16.b.7.D - locate on a map important physical features such as the Rocky Mountains, Mississippi River, and Great Plains. 4. Actively participate in discussions to determine the best answers within a group. 5. Summarize the highlights of each region through music. 6. REGIONAL WRAP-UP

DESCRIPTION:

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:

1. Students will be divided into 4 groups, according to regions. Each group will be given itsregional puzzle pieces and maps.

2. The teacher will read a trivia question and each group will work together todetermine the answer.

3. The group with the correct state name response will paste the puzzle piece in the properlocation.

4. Upon completion the U.S. puzzle will be a whole.5. The songs about the regions will be sung together. Have the students make a

big "set" on the carpet.6. When you finish singing, have each student take a baggie filled with shaving cream and a

piece of white drawing paper back to his/ her seat.7. Tell them to "create" their favorite state with the shaving cream on the drawing paper.

At least one physical feature must be included (Get those fingers messy!)8. Let each student share his/her favorite state with the class - explaining the reason it's

their favorite and describing the physical feature.9. Pass out U.S. note paper to students as positive reinforcement for their participation

and attention throughout the lesson.

MATERIALS:

1. Maps of the U.S.2. baggies3. shaving cream4. food coloring5. white drawing paper6. chart paper with songs7. map with puzzle pieces: transparency Velcro poster board

EVALUATION:

The teacher will observe and note each student's participation during the lesson.

The teacher will grade the shaving cream maps based on shape and physical featureaccuracy and oral presentation.

EXTENSIONS:

1. Have the students work in pairs to create a new song about a state or region. Youmight need to suggest a tune for the pair to use to help get them started. Be sure toencourage brainstorming the ideas for lyrics.

2. Have the students make books about the region to display and share with the class. Eachbook might contain different concepts including physical feature, man-make structures,transportation, tourism, industry, etc.

3. Put capital city symbols on the puzzle pieces for each state. Put names of capitalcities on the base map. Encourage students to work in pairs to learn perhaps 5 statesand capitals and when they're ready, they can share them with the group.

4. Have the students bring geography books from home or the library. Work in groups tocompare books on similar topics (mountains, rivers, oceans, volcanoes, canyons, etc.).Which book do you think is better? Why? The students could also compare maps.

5. Extend with the whole class through Language Experience. Have the students create astory about vacationing in each region. Write their story (as it is created) on the board.Read it back to them. Copy it for them or use it for a handwriting lesson. Encourage themto illustrate the story.
