looking at basic ethical themes such as, justice,
freedom, happiness, and human nature. We
will attempt to gain a better understanding
regarding such timely questions as: How can
we better recognize contradictions between
the ideals we claim to espouse, and the actual
ways of the world? How can we quit being so
quick to label others, and to label ourselves? In
a world so seemingly overwhelmed by unin-
tended consequences, no good deed ever
goes unpunished, why even bother? If you’re
looking for an opportunity to contribute or be
enlightened by an honest open discussion of
the philosophical, ethical, and moral trends
facing the world today, drop by the café.

our own lives may not be going as we would

And It Came to Pass:
Accepting Uncertainty Instructor: Shirley Mahood On: 10/25/2013 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Fee: $5
Change is difficult for many people. It is hard
to recognize the fact that we cannot always be
in charge of what happens to us, especially
those things we really did not want to hap-
pen. How do we learn to not only accept, but
also perhaps even come to relish the unexpect-
edness of life. When we can, our lives become
richer.
Retirement Without Regrets Instructor: Kay Prince On: 11/13/2013 3:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Fee: $10
Do you really have the vibrant retirement life
that you imagined? Does your life satisfy your
soul and make your heart sing? Based on the
positive aging philosophy, this workshop
teaches a five step formula to create an ex-
traordinary, thriving retirement life, based on
who you are, what you want out of life and
what matters most to you.

safer on the roads. There is a $12 materials

and $14 for non-members paid directly to the
instructor.
Letting Go Instructor: Shirley Mahood On: 11/1/2013 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Fee: $5
Much of the stress we experience is because
we are not willing to surrender to what
is. Some things we cannot change, much as we
might like to. But how do we let go of such
things as bad relationships, unhealthy habits,
unrealistic expectations, or guilt, for exam-
ple. Letting go may not be easy, but the re-
wards are great.
Understanding Human Nature Instructor: Diane Sanden On: 11/4/2013 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Fee: $5
A look at basic human nature, highlighting the
work of Alfred Adler and William James, consid-
ered to be some of the modern fathers of psy-
chology. Adler is famous for his work on “birth
order” and how we seek to increase our power
in the world. As social beings we create a style
in life in response to our environment and what
we feel we lack. William James was a philoso-
pher who defined psychology as the ‘science of
mental life’. Because we are creatures of habit,
we must work hard to forge positive habitual
behaviors in life.
People Skills Instructor: Diane Sanden On: 11/11/2013 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Fee: $5

con, Copernicus, Descartes, Galileo, and New-

RELIGIONRELIGIONRELIGIONRELIGION
The Meaning of Buddhist Symbols Instructor: TBD On: 10/21/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $5
The Eight Auspicious Symbols are very mean-
ingful religious symbols in Buddhism, revealing
essential teachings and meditations on the
Buddhist path to enlightenment. Through
learning the meaning of each one we can learn
what we need to abandon and what we need
to accomplish in order to become happy and
benefit others. This workshop also serves as an
excellent introduction to Buddhism.
Islam 101 Instructor: Azra Hussain On: 10/24/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $10
Islam is one of the fastest-growing religions in
the United States today. According to one sur-
vey, there are 1,209 mosques in America, well
over half founded in the last 20 years. Between
17 and 30 percent of American Muslims are
converts to the faith. At the center of both tra-
ditional American life and the lives of the gen-
erally more recent Muslim immigrants is the
family. As Shahed Amanullah, an engineer who
lives in San Francisco, California, puts it,
“American values are, by and large, very consis-
tent with Islamic values, with a focus on family,
faith, hard work, and an obligation to better
self and society.” This class is a brief introduc-
tion to a complex subject, an attempt to ex-
plore in words and images the extraordinary
range and richness of the way American Mus-
lims live. That point of cross-cultural common-
ality — the family — is where we begin.
Religions of the Far East Instructor: Samuel Sawitski Starts: 10/31/2013 until 11/21/2013 4 meetings 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Fee: $20

In both holy books, the passages referring to
Joseph, one of the sons of Patriarch Jacob,
are amazingly similar, even though they were
written over fifteen hundred years apart.
We shall conduct a comparative study of the
two accounts in an attempt to get a full
picture of the life of a fascinating personality.
Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: Part 2 Instructor: Kadam Michelle Gauthier On: 12/16/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $5

Future Evolution of the Human Mind Instructor: Tom Lombardo Starts: 9/26/2013 until 12/5/2013 10 meetings 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Fee: $70
Speculative visions of the future, although of-
ten set in strange high-tech environments, usu-
ally portray humans possessing the same men-
tal make-up as they have today. It seems highly
doubtful that this view of future human psy-
chology is correct. As history and science re-
veal, human nature is transformative and
evolving, and not some single unchanging real-
ity. Generously sprinkled with both contempo-
rary non-fiction resources and visions and sci-
ence fiction scenarios, we will discuss how fu-
ture developments in scientific psychology,
brain research, the study of consciousness, bi-
ology and biotechnology, nanotechnology,
computer technology and robotics, education,
spirituality, human society and culture, and
even physics and space travel will transform
and enhance the capacities and qualities of the
human mind. And we go further, considering
the possible, indeed highly likely, psychological
and biological transcendence of humanity.
The Deluge: Noah’s Flood Instructor: Robert E. Farrell On: 10/7/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $5
The evidence is overwhelming that there was a
world-wide catastrophe known as the Deluge
(Noah’s Flood). The Deluge that appears in The
Old Testament as well as ancient stories such as
the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh and the older
Babylonian Atra-hasis epic will be discussed.
Various dates and places for the event pro-
posed by other researchers and are discussed.
Various hypotheses will be presented as well as
Dr. Farrell’s own conclusion that the event re-
corded by the Babylonians and Sumerians oc-
curred in Mesopotamia about 14,800 years ago
as a result of the Post Glacial Sea Rise.
The Science Behind Alien Encounters Instructor: Robert E. Farrell Starts: 11/4/2013 until 11/5/2013 2 meetings 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Fee: $10
This lecture covers topics from cosmology and
astronomy to anthropology and ancient be-
liefs to address the questions: Are we being
visited? What are the amazing similarities be-
tween what the Sumerians knew about our so-
lar system six thousand years ago and what
present day astronomers know today? Are the
aliens trying to communicate with us? How can
one determine if a crop circle formation is
"real" or man-made? How do UFOs accelerate at
100 Gs and make right angle turns ? How do
the craft propel themselves, change colors,
and how do they "cloak" themselves? How is it
possible to create gravitational field propul-
sion? This is explained using both classical and
relativistic physics.

day innovative techniques available for the
cure of HIV and is Breast Cancer he-
reditary?
Forensic Investigation Instructor: Ken Snowdowne Starts: 11/15/2013 until 12/13/2013 4 meetings 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Fee: $20
Do you know how it really works? Are you a fan
of murder mysteries? Do you get your kicks
from Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes or CSI or
Midsummer Murders? Join Dr. Ken Snowdowne
on a short course of how forensic scientists
gather evidence from a crime scene, finger
print analysis, blood stains, tire marks and bal-
listics to establish guilt and innocence. The
DVD-based course will begin with a series of
basic lectures on “What is Forensic Science”,
“How to investigate a crime scene”, “Use of Fin-
ger Prints” and other physical evidences and
then the class will chose from many different
subjects such as DNA identification, Poisons,
Fire Science, Blood Stains and Forensic Profil-

Embryonic Stem Cell Research Instructor: William P. Stollar On: 11/19/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $5
The use of research on stem cells has been con-
troversial over the past few decades. Many
controversies remain an ongoing issue, arising
from the fact that embryonic stem cells are
typically obtained from the inner mass of the
blastocyst, the early stage embryo. Stem cells,

A PowerPoint lecture: Part I discusses the his-
tory of cosmology citing paradigm shifts since
Ptolemy. Part II discusses various hypotheses
about the origin of the universe including the
popular Big Bang theory and its weaknesses.
An alternative theory is then presented which
uses the same data but does not violate the
laws of physics.

ing of physics. The goal of this lecture is to
show how the fundamental ideas of physics
apply to most of the things we experience
every day. Main topics will include motion, en-
ergy, forces, how things work (such as GPS), as

The Gila River Valley of Central Arizona has long
been recognized as the heartland of the Hoho-
kam cultural tradition. Between A.D. 500 and
1450, Hohokam populations living along the
Gila River built hundreds of miles of canals and
farmed thousand of acres of land. The largest
of these canal systems - known as the Casa
Grande system - extended for more than 20
miles from east of modern day Florence to
west of Coolidge. Over the past 15 years, ar-
chaeologists have learned a great deal about
the operation of the Casa Grande system and
the history of the farming villages established
along it. Dr. Craig will present an overview of
this research and discuss its implications for
understanding Hohokam social and political
organization. Class 2 is a day-trip (car pooling
will be coordinated) to Casa Grande National
Monument with a guided tour of the Monu-
ment by Dr. Craig. We will stop for lunch (at
