A full-day interactive tutorial which is part of CDBI’s continuing professional development
program. An in-depth introduction to design-build that is a must for practitioners, owners,
decision-makers and those wanting greater knowledge of this growing project delivery
practice.
In the fast moving world of construction the pace never seems to slow down. Projects
requiring “fast track” delivery are now delivered at “hyper track” speed. Getting a jump on
projects demands that Design-Build teams connect their people, in a way that integrates
the best ideas, conceive a dynamic response, and assure the Owner of a well-constructed
end product. The design-build world utilizes all the latest technology to deliver projects
incorporating new concepts and tools such as Sustainability, LEEDTM and BIM. With
rapidly changing technology driving our industry, making the connection and sharing the
information in an integrated team environment becomes paramount.
Staying ahead of this steep learning curve remains a challenge to our industry. Consultants,
Contractors and Owners need to meet these challenges head on. Come and share your
experiences, both good and bad, at what is expected to be the best Canadian Design-Build
conference yet!A Special Committee

and Labrador, and the oldest city in North America.
Seafarers originally came to the “new-found-land” to
take advantage of the vibrant fishery; businessmen
followed and set up shop, and the town quickly became
a centre for trade and export. Today, visitors can still see
many of the original buildings and a community that
has proudly preserved a strong culture and history.

9:00 AM Opening Remarks and IntroductionsDoug Aris, Canadian Design-Build Institute (CDBI) Chair, & Ben Novak Conference Chair
9:15 AM SESSION 1 – Rod Yeoh Sustainability, LEED, and Design-Build Projects This presentation will cover how sustainability and LEED can and should be integrated into a design-build project. Using case
studies examples, this presentation will provide details on how sustainability should be incorporated into all aspects of the design build process. It will also cover specific details of LEED certification, with particular focus on the energy aspects of the project.
10:15 AM SESSION 2 – Neil McFarlane Selecting a Design-Builder with an Accelerated RFP: Royal Alberta Museum When the Royal Alberta Museum project was announced, people and ideas had to be quickly consolidated in order to
develop and issue the RFP, and select the Design-Build team within five months. This presentation looks at how three levels of government, stakeholders, and Design-Build Proponents were involved to provide solutions for a complex design, meeting the Owner’s necessary requirements on an accelerated schedule.
11:15 AM Health Break
11:30 AM SESSION 3 – Nolan Heuchert & Steve Panciuk Professional Liability Insurance Perspective of the Design-Build Sector Professional Liability Insurance (aka Errors & Omissions Insurance) plays an integral role in the management of design risks
associated with Design-Build projects. Whether it’s the design builder, or whether it’s the design team, all have a vested interest in the availability of professional liability insurance to the project. This presentation will provide some additional insight on the view of professional liability exposures from an insurance underwriter’s perspective of looking at design build projects with a focus on:• Claims examples with case studies involving cost overruns, design growth and design errors.• A view on the evolution of design build projects into P3 and other hybrid models, and the potential implication on the liability exposures to the design team, and design team members.• Alternate Dispute Resolution and its benefit in the management of professional liability claims.
12:30 PM SESSION 4 – Luncheon Presentation – Christine Zakrajsek & Paul Stocco Social Media in the A/E/C Sector Architects, engineers, contractors and construction professionals are evaluating how to use social
media. This session will be presented by 2 speakers who will discuss the potential, and the pitfalls, that social media has for the A/E/C sector. Social media in construction is not simply a marketing operation: It is YOUR operation. Your people are your brand: energize them to spread the word. Learn how to ‘listen’ to what is being said and what to do about it. This presentation will demonstrate: how to start a social media program for any size of an A/E/C firm; what specific operational benefits you can gain from a social media program (show me the money!); the strength of the conversation offered through social media; how to set up a simple listening program on social media channels; how to bridge the online world with the real world; and good ways of handling bad situations. This session will also provide guidance on some of the legal considerations that arise for an A/E/C firm as a result of the advent of social media.
2:00 PM SESSION 5 – Chris Rick, Douglas Smith & Steve Kemp Delivering High-Performance, High-Sustainable P3 Projects The P3 delivery model is expanding across Canada – both geographically and across building sectors. The associated
challenges and risks stretch the limits of current design-build conventions necessitating adaptation of new technologies, new tools and a new way of doing things. Listen to a design-build team which has learned together how to succeed in this high risk, high speed and highly sustainable world.
3:00 PM SESSION 6 – Simon Daniels Roberts Bank Rail Corridor – People, Ideas & Collaboration An intricate, thought provoking presentation revealing best practices, detailed design concepts, and the amalgamation of
ideas from Construction Specialists in every realm. This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor Project – an extensive project including design and construction services for roadway infrastructure, and four associated bridges across the rail corridor leading to the Port of Vancouver’s Roberts Bank Superport.
4:00 – 6:00 PM CDBI Networking Reception Come and relax and join our Céilidh, indulge in delicious refreshments while mingling with your fellow delegates and
speakers. Bring your business cards!
PLEASE NOTE: Final tutorial, conference program and speakers faculty subject to change.
8:30 AM Registration and Continental Breakfast
9:00 AM CDBI Annual General Meeting (all delegates welcome)
9:30 AM SESSION 7 – Ben Novak Design Service Fees and Design-Build This session will provide an overview of the real costs and financial risks of the professional design firm, along with an
interactive debate. Themes to be discussed cover many timely issues such as, understanding the financial model of the design firm as compared to a building contractor’s operation and the issues facing firms collaborating or partnering with contractors in design-build projects. There will also be dialogue on what might the future forms of collaborations be and how will the fee model respond? As designer-builders, do we deliver products or services? As a team we deliver a product, but within the team we deal with both and what learning is involved, what legal and regulatory changes are needed?
10:15 AM SESSION 8 – Denis Fortin, Glen Klym & Ken Disley Integrating Sustainability via Modified Design-Build Using a unique Modified Design-Build process the Mid-Term Accommodation Project (MTAP) the Communications Security
Establishment Canada (CSEC) provides an open, highly collaborative workplace and sets a global standard in sustainability through protection, preservation and enhancement of the natural environment. Designed to be LEED® Gold Certified, the delivery method, through the close and effective integration of client/designer/builder, allowed for successful solutions to challenges presented. As a federal project in Ottawa, MTAP was required to satisfy both the needs of DND, DCC and CSEC as well as the requirements of the National Capital Commission (NCC).
11:15 AM Health Break
11:30 AM SESSION 9 – Jason Yeung & Saeid Izadpanah PPP, Its Evolution and Its Future Since the first P3 project, the process has changed considerably. The DBFM model has evolved as the base line. New
methods including BFM, BF and DBF have been introduced. There are reasons behind this evolution and this presentation will shed some light on these issues.
12:30 PM Design-Build Luncheon – The CDBI Design-Build Award of ExcellencePresentation of the CDBI awards, recognizing excellence in Canada’s design-build industry.
1:30 PM Wrap-up and Concluding RemarksDoug Aris, CDBI Chair, & Ben Novak, Conference Chair

Come and share your
experiences, both good and bad, at what is expected to be the best Canadian Design-Build
conference yet!A Special Committee
of the Canadian Construction Association

Fundamentals of Design-Build
Connect…Conceive…ConstructOCTOBER 11-12, 2012
St. John’s is the provincial capital of Newfoundland
and Labrador, and the oldest city in North America.
Seafarers originally came to the “new-found-land” to
take advantage of the vibrant fishery; businessmen
followed and set up shop, and the town quickly became
a centre for trade and export. Today, visitors can still see
many of the original buildings and a community that
has proudly preserved a strong culture and history.
Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland is located just a short
walk from the city’s business and downtown shopping
district. Immerse yourself in Newfoundland’s culture and
visit Cape Spear Historic Park – the most easterly point in
North America, or book a tour of the city.
