Registered Schools in VictoriaInformation sheet 3Registered schools by sectorThere were 2254 registered schools in Victoria at 30 June 2017. Two-thirds are government schools, over 20 per cent are Catholic schools, and nearly one-in-ten is an independent school.

Registered schools by typeAbout 70 per cent of Victorian schools are primary schools. A quarter are secondary or primary-secondary schools, and five per cent are specialist/specific purpose schools.
The majority (96 per cent) of schools are co-educational.

Number of schools by locationOverall, 58 per cent of schools are located in the Greater Melbourne Area and 42 per cent in rural and regional Victoria.
There is a relatively high proportion of schools, particularly primary schools, in rural and regional areas.

This increase is in the context of significant growth in school enrolments in Victoria in recent years.
