This session will cover the role of nutrition for maternal health, fetal development, and infant growth in early life. Specifically, we will discuss maternal nutrition from conception through lactation. This will be followed by a close look at how energy and nutrient imbalances during pregnancy can alter genetic outcomes, increasing the life-long risk for chronic disease in the growing child, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and stroke. We will present key points to cover during counseling to ensure that the introduction of complementary foods and the acquisition of the child’s first dietary pattern over the course of the first 2 years is optimal. We also will touch on infant feeding problems that parents and care-givers report and the changes to the diet that the clinicians may order to counter them. Dr. Robert Murray

These concepts, outlined in the Baby-Friendly Steps 3 and 10, reinforce the importance of a close collaborative relationship between the hospital and the WIC agency. In this session, attendees will experience one urban hospital’s successful journey to Baby-Friendly through the lens of Steps 3 and 10. Attendees will come away with concrete steps that they can use to facilitate a two-way relationship with the hospital.
