33RD ANNUAL CONFERENCEAGM & TRADESHOW

PRESIDENT’S WELCOMEThe 33rd Annual Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists Conference, AGM and Tradeshow will occur this November 3–5, 2017, here in beautiful Saskatoon…the “City of Bridges.” This event is certain to meet your annual continuing education requirements and is held in upscale venues specifically chosen to support the 2017 SAVT Conference theme of “Creating Connections, Building Bridges”—essential elements necessary to strengthen and enhance your veterinary technology career.

Industry sponsors enable the SAVT to offer an impressive annual Conference. It is important that you are in attendance and “Creating Connections” with industry representatives—they will have new veterinary related equipment, pharmaceuticals and products available that you will want to try out in your veterinary workplace. Our Diamond sponsor this year is once again Royal Canin; Ruby sponsor is Pet Plan, and Platinum sponsors are The SPAW and TotoFit Canada. Please be sure to extend a big “Thank you” to each and every sponsor and industry representative.

New this year, we have added the “Fall Job Fair & Marketplace.” This Friday-only event will give you the opportunity to network and “connect” with clinics that are looking to add a Registered Veterinary Technologist to their staff. If you are in need of a little “retail therapy”, the marketplace will feature small businesses with specialty items for you to purchase.

The newly created CE Survey enabled us to respond by choosing topics specifically to our members’ suggestions. With five full tracks from which to choose your sessions, this conference will offer you more continuing education sessions than in any previous year. Speakers, who are all well-known and highly regarded for their expertise in the veterinary community, will bring you topics from multiple disciplines. There is a blend of large, small and exotic animal based material; animal welfare topics; personal development and workplace related topics. The bonus CE session will be interactive and offer you something new—an opportunity to pose workplace task and scope of practice related questions; the answers will be provided in the context of The Veterinarian’s Act, 1987 and current SVMA Bylaws.

Each session allows for “Building Bridges” with veterinary experts—you may even be motivated to pursue certification in one of the thirteen areas of specialization now available for RVTs. You are invited to take your RVT career to the next level!

Finally, I welcome you all to join us for the Saturday evening Banquet, Awards and Entertainment. The Banquet is an event for “Creating Connections” while enjoying a delicious meal and honoring our peers for their important accomplishments. This year’s live hypnotist will help ensure the festivities will continue into the evening. Watching your friends getting up to hilarious hijinks is something you will not want to miss.

Sincerely,

Lois Ridgway, RVT SAVT President 2016–2017

33RD ANNUAL CONFERENCEAGM & TRADESHOW

SATURDAY SESSION DESCRIPTIONS8:15–9:00 AM KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Dealing with DISConnect—Building bridges in Work/Life BalanceDavid Liss, BA, RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), CVPM

Technicians are notorious for being workaholics. Even animal-aholics. This results in burnout, distress, turnover, leaving the profession, stress, and even suicidal tendencies. Burnout and compassion fatigue are serious conditions that result in technicians isolating themselves, gaining weight stress, and are even at risk for addictions. Work is work, and our work is very demanding. Learning how to balance work and a separate life is an essential skill for veterinary technicians, and we are often not taught to do this. This keynote is aimed at presenting information about burnout, compassion fatigue and turnover, present the importance of a work-life balance, suggest great ways to start, and how to integrate the demanding job of being a veterinary technician with a full, fruitful life that results in happiness and career longevity.

9:15–10:15 AM SESSIONS

It’s What’s For Dinner—Nutrition for Hospitalized PatientsDavid Liss, BA, RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), CVPMSponsored by Hill's Pet Nutrition

Nutritional intervention in critically ill patients has become known in recent years to be of the utmost importance. This lecture will cover the basics of nutritional assessment, creating a nutritional plan, calculating caloric requirements, administering various types of diets, and a variety of side effects that could occur with nutritional intervention. The role of the veterinary technician will be emphasized and the goal of the talk is for vet techs to be able to implement the techniques discussed in the lecture in their own practices.

Equine Disease and Vaccination ConceptsAlycia Chrenek, DVMSponsored by Zoetis

This 55 minute session will help clarify the technician’s knowledge on the subject as well as tips and tricks to help answer common horse owner questions and concerns. We will discuss the diseases most commonly vaccinated for in Canada, as well as AAEP designation of Core vaccines and Risk vaccines. This session will also cover why we vaccinate on the schedules we do, vaccine handling, vaccination administration and post vaccine expectations and complications

Goat and Sheep Herd HealthFabienne D. Uehlinger, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM-LA

This presentation will give a summary overview of important sheep and goat herd health management considerations, focusing on aspects such as vaccination, control for parasites and general management procedures to be considered.

Treating Canine Fear Aggression —Management, Modification and Medication (90 min)Gary Landsberg DVM, DACVB, DECAWBM

Whether in the home or out for a walk, both unfamiliar dogs and people evoke fear and anxiety leading to aggression for many dogs. This seminar will take a five step approach to case consulting for dogs with fear aggression including a) Diagnosis—Is it medical or is it behavioral and is it normal or abnormal? b) Prognosis—Assessing risk and determining to what level improvement might be achieved, c) Management—Identifying triggers, preventing recurrence and insuring safety, d) Modification—Setting foundations in place, selecting appropriate tools and modifying behavior with reward based exposure training, e) Behavior medication—what drugs or natural products might be indicated and when .

11:00 AM–12:00 PM SESSIONS

Endocrine Disease Basics for Vet Techs! David Liss, BA, RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), CVPM

Endocrine diseases are seen commonly in the small animal hospital. Understanding the presentation, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of conditions like Addison’s, Cushing’s, Hyper/Hypothyroidism and more. The veterinary technician can be so important in assisting the veterinarian with these cases with patient management and client communication. These diseases involve complex testing, medications, and repeat check-ups. If veterinary technicians are to advance in skills and responsibilities it is imperative to take on new roles in the practice—including primary case management which can only occur with advanced knowledge.

Nobody Likes to Hurt—Equine pain and Sedation Management Alycia Chrenek, DVMSponsored by Zoetis

2017 REGISTRATION BROCHURE

Those Other ‘Ruminants’—Alpacas & Llamas Fabienne D. Uehlinger, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM-LA

Alpacas and llamas are not just like other ruminants. Caring for them provides some unique challenges that should be considered. This presentation will aim to highlight some of these unique features, what they mean for the care (especially in a hospital setting) and will briefly talk about common presenting complaints.

Stress Management & Dealing with Difficult Clients (Part 2 of 2)Jolene Watson, RVT, President of Clarity Coaching & Development

This seminar will provide an overview of the medications and natural products that might be used in the treatment of problem behavior, evidence for efficacy, how they work and where they might be used.

2:15–3:15 PM SESSIONS

“Gasp!” Respiratory EmergenciesDavid Liss, BA, RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), CVPM

This presentation will cover assessing the respiratory patient, performing a physical exam, initial stabilization, approaches to a variety of respiratory emergencies and how to provide critical care nursing to these patients. Veterinary technicians must take an aggressive role in assisting the vet in managing these patients as the veterinarian will require rapid action to ensure the patient will recover.

Nutritional Welfare in Cattle Dr. John Campbell DVM, DVSc

Animal welfare is an important topic in all species of animals including beef cattle. Most of our producers take excellent care of their beef cattle and welfare is not an issue. However, in some circumstances in cow-calf herds, nutritional issues can have serious consequences on both productivity and animal welfare. This presentation will focus on herd investigation cases that are nutritional or toxicological in nature and that have major welfare implications. An approach to working through these cases as part of the veterinary team will be discussed.

Zoological Companion Animal Sedation, Anesthesia, and Analgesia (Exotics)Miranda Sadar, DVM, Dipl. ACZM

Zoological companion animal (ZCA, exotics) medicine is a constantly changing field, and anesthesia of these species is no exception. This talk will focus on new techniques and concepts regarding the use of sedation for diagnostic procedures (such as radiographs, ultrasound, and blood collection), common anesthetic protocols, and analgesic options. The lecture will focus on videos to allow those new to ZCA species to become more comfortable with the appearance of sedated ZCA species, and new drugs and protocols for those with more ZCA experience.

Do Dogs and Cats get Alzheimer’s? Diagnosis and Treatment of Cognitive DysfunctionGary Landsberg DVM, DACVB, DECAWBMSponsored by Purina

Dogs and cats develop strikingly similar brain aging pathology and many of the same clinical signs seen in early cases of Alzheimer’s in people including altered social interactions, altered activity and sleep, learning and memory deficits, and increased agitation. While the prevalence and severity of signs increase with age, most cases go undiagnosed due to lack of owner reporting. Diagnosis, clinical signs, prevalence and strategies for prevention and treatment will be reviewed.

33RD ANNUAL CONFERENCEAGM & TRADESHOW

4:00–5:00 PM SESSIONS

“All Stopped Up!”—Blocked CatsDavid Liss, BA, RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), CVPM

Blocked cats are a common emergency seen in small animal practice. Veterinary medicine does a really good job of treating them and there is a very low mortality rate. Vet techs are very important in the treatment of these patients because they often are responsible for catheterizing, monitoring, and nursing these patients. This lecture will cover the pathophysiology of the development of urethral obstruction, hyperkalemia treatment, lab testing, urinary catheter types and placement, and follow up care.

Bovine Prairie Disease Overview Dr. John Campbell DVM, DVSc

This presentation will have an overview of some of the diseases we’ve seen in the last few years across the prairies in beef cow herds. From tuberculosis to Johnes we will explore some of the factors that cause these outbreaks to occur.

Zoonotic Disease and Zoological Companion Animals: Keeping Everyone in the Clinic Safe (Exotics)Miranda Sadar, DVM, Dipl. ACZM

Zoonotic disease is becoming more of a focus in veterinary medicine, and veterinarians often rely on technicians to be in the first line to help protect clients and patients in the clinic. This talk will cover common zoonotic diseases in zoological companion animals (ZCA, exotics). Additionally, there are a few diseases that are carried by humans and can be transmitted to ZCA species that will be covered, as well as diseases that may be transmitted between ZCA species. Applicable to all levels, whether ZCA species are only seen on occasion or if they come through the doors frequently.

Mobility Matters: The Veterinary Technician’s Role in Physical RehabilitationJenn Panko, RVT, CCRP VTS (Physical Rehab-OC) OCMC, CAPMC

Sponsored by The SPAW and Totofit Canada

Veterinary Physical Rehabilitation is a veterinary nursing skill that Jenn Panko promises to get

you excited about! Mobility care for all ages and stages improves patient care, comfort, recovery, and client perception of care. Certification options and continuing education opportunities will be presented and the newly formed Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in Physical Rehabilitation (NAVTA) will be discussed.

Feisty Felines—Prevention and Management of Kitten Behavior Issues Gary Landsberg DVM, DACVB, DECAWBM

A good understanding of feline development and problem prevention is a helpful addition to any practice. The information you receive will help you appropriately counsel kitten owners about normal but unwanted behaviors including destructiveness and scratching, and aggression associated with petting and play, and how to prevent those behaviors with effective preventive counseling, resource material and kitten classes.

2017 REGISTRATION BROCHURE

SUNDAY LAB TOPIC DESCRIPTIONSCode Blue! CPR for Veterinary Technicians and Assistants 9:30 AM–2:30 PMDavid Liss, BA, RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), CVPM

CPR is often a disastrous event with more confusion than coordination occurring at any given time. However, it should not be so. CPR should be a controlled, well-rehearsed procedure that takes place not only when a patient is crashing, but also when there is down time in the clinic to practice. Additionally, CPR techniques should be updated as new information is presented over and over. This lab will present the newest and most updated CPR techniques and train the participants in the team approach to CPR. Basic assessment of a patient in cardiopulmonary arrest, starting basic life support, initiating advanced life support, administering medications, intubation, and various case scenarios will be presented.

Equine Radiology9:30–11:30 AM, 12:30–2:30 PMKate Robinson Bsc, DVM, MVSc, DABVP (Equine Practice)

This will be a hands-on, participant-driven lab using digital radiography equipment. Proper positioning, and labeling of radiographs will be reviewed, as will determining diagnostic vs non-diagnostic images, routine views/series, proper preparation of the region of interest, and sedation protocols for restraint. Radiographic images of the fetlock, carpus, tarsus and stifle will be obtained on live horses by lab participants. Images will be reviewed for quality according to the above parameters. Time permitting; radiography of the head and neck will also be performed by participants.

Radiographic Positioning of Zoological Companion Animals (Exotics) (Morning Only)

9:30–11:30 AMMiranda Sadar, DVM, Dipl. ACZM

Radiographic positioning is vital to proper diagnostic interpretation in veterinary medicine, including zoological companion animals (ZCA, exotics). Due to the variety in body shapes and species, they can be difficult to position properly to avoid rotation. This lab will provide hands-on practice with a variety of species, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. We will discuss techniques for positioning, and learners will be able to practice positioning themselves through use of

cadavers and models. The lab will take place in a radiology suite so learners can critique their own techniques and troubleshoot as needed.

Clinical Techniques in Zoological Companion Animals (Exotics)(Afternoon Only)

12:30–2:30 PM

Miranda Sadar, DVM, Dipl. ACZM

Clinical techniques that are utilized commonly in small animal practice are also common in zoological companion animal (ZCA, exotics) practice. However, these techniques can be intimidating due to the variety of species and different body shapes. This lab is focused on triage and emergency techniques, and will be most appropriate for those new to ZCA species, however more advanced learners are welcome to attend and further practice their skills. Techniques covered will include proper restraint, injections, venipuncture and catheterization sites (both IV and IO), intubation, and proper CPR techniques. This lab will provide hands-on practice with both mammal and bird cadavers.

This seminar will first look at the consequences of a fearful veterinary environment on the emotional and physical well-being of the pet as well as its effect on the pet owner and veterinary hospital personnel. We will then focus on strategies and methods for making the veterinary visit a positive, fear free experience for dogs and cats as well as for the owners and the veterinary team by attending to the social and physical environment to which the pet is exposed from home to clinic, through veterinary procedures and home again. In the final portion of the seminar we will look at

how to most calmly and effectively manage those pets that become fearful, anxious or stressed during the veterinary visit by making adjustments to approach and handling, through behavioral modification including desensitization and counterconditioning and with the use of behavior management products, and with medications both prior to the visit and during the visit.
