COURSE DESCRIPTIONLocal anesthetics (LA) are the safest and most effective drugs in medicine for the prevention and management of pain. However, the young child patients present a challenge for the dentist in relation to safety versus risk. Dr. Malamed will review current LA formulations, their efficacy and safety in children and discuss differences in a child’s anatomy and technique for achieving effective safe pain control. Medical emergencies can, and do, occur in the practice of dentistry. Dr. Malamed will review basic preparation of the dental office and staff, including specifics for the pediatric patient, to recognize and effectively manage these emergencies that might arise in both adults and children. Specific emergencies common to children will be reviewed, including bronchospasm (asthma), seizures, and drug overdose (e.g. local anesthetics, sedatives).
