Benefits of Summer CampWhen summer approaches, it can sometimes be difficult to look ahead and make decisions on how your child will spend their summer break from school. Summer camps offer a wonderful option for your child to get out of the house in a safe environment and make memories. But summer camps aren’t just about getting out of the house. Actually, they’re about a whole lot more...

SocializationA big part of going to camp is being around other children around the same age. Whether they are registered for the same camp with friends or if they are making brand new friends, socialization is a big part of summer camp. Children often work together to complete tasks or bond over common interests. Socialization offers the building blocks of creating relationships as well as understanding the dynamics of problem-solving, cooperation and respect.

Healthy LivingThe importance of exercise and healthy choices for children is often discussed as the obesity rate in children has doubled over the last 30 years. Many summer camps assist with keeping our children physically active when the school year is through. The Park System offers a variety of sports camps for your child to try out a new sport or to work on their abilities in one they already play. If you’re child isn’t particularly drawn to a specific sport, there are plenty of other camps that help your child get moving during the summer with active games and/or fitness.

Self-ConfidenceSummer camps allow children to explore, whether that be within their current interests or discovering new ones. This exploration and joining together with other children offers a sense of belonging which increases their self-esteem. Campers are always urged to work together and include one another in activities. The focus of summer camp is always placed on fun, but the children are also learning respect and communication as well.

TeamworkWorking together as a group is an important trait for all ages. Working together with both their peers and their camp counselors creates a successful camp experience for all. Teamwork is built upon in all camp situations, whether it’s during fun games, helping each other with new crafts, exploring the outdoors in a canoe, or creating culinary masterpieces.

Outdoor FunOver half of children spend only an hour or less playing outside each day. Whether it’s playing a sport on the field, taking a nature walk, or kayaking on a lake or river, being in the outdoors is often the perfect detachment from the many screens at our fingertips in our current tech savvy world. It also provides a wider array of stimulation through activating all of the senses - what they can see, hear, smell and touch in their outdoor environment. Plus, being out in nature often involves some kind of exercise and is known to reduce stresses and anxieties.

Find the Right CampWith the many options for summer camps throughout our area, it may be overwhelming to decide which will be right for your child. Your Monmouth County Park System provides hundreds of weekly summer camps every year to allow you to choose from a vast number of activities. This gives us the opportunity to bring in many different types of camps for the wide array of interests your child may have. From arts & crafts to popular culture, sports & fitness to nature, outdoor adventures to performing arts, and even stepping back in time through farm life & living history, you’ll easily find a camp that suits your child’s interests.

Looking for more of a long-term, day camp style? We’ve got that too! Our Summertime Fun at the Fort camp is available every week of the summer with options of full weeks for you to choose what fits your summer schedule (half day options available OR register for the full summer session (details on page 18).

What’s Next?Once you’ve chosen the right camp(s) for your child, you can register them using a variety of methods (all described on the inside front cover of this Parks & Programs Guide) starting at noon on Sunday, March 3. From there, be sure to fill out the necessary camp forms as soon as possible to ensure that your child is ready to start their first week of camp this summer. Have questions? Learn the basics of camp counseling while having fun. Get a head start on developing important job skills during an active week of learning, games and leadership skills. For one week, Junior Counselors will assist

Summertime Fun at the FortFort Monmouth Recreation Center, Tinton Falls

The camp kids keep asking to come back to! Caring and dedicated counselors lead children through fun-filled days of activity and exploration. Our campers enjoy creating messy concoctions, expressing

themselves through crafts, and making friends through active games and sports. We also learn community service by tending a small vegetable garden whose produce is then donated to Lunch Break in Red Bank.

Of course, we’ll also have a daily dip in our swimming pool! Children are grouped by age. (Please Note: Half Day campers swim Tuesday-Friday.)

Eco-Survival Camp for Teens(entering grades 8-12, age 17 and under)Get ready for an adventure! Create an amazing summer for a young adult. Teens will enjoy a wide variety of activities including rock-climbing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, fossiling, wilderness survival, crabbing, using a net to catch fish, and much more! ODYSSEY ADVENTURE BIKE REQUIREMENTS• For all camps involving biking, campers must have a properly fitted bicycle helmet that complies

with U.S. CPSC Safety Standards for Bicycle Helmets for persons five and older. The CPSC labelis located inside the helmet. Campers will not be permitted to wear helmets without this label.

• Campers must bring a properly fitted two-wheel bicycle in good working condition that theyare comfortable with and in control of when riding.

• Two-wheel bicycles are highly recommended for the Mini Odyssey Adventures, campersentering 2nd and 3rd grade, and are required for all Odysseys entering 4th grade and up.

• Training wheels will be accepted on Odyssey Explorers camp for entering grades K-1.

Beach Yoga for Athletes Camp (entering grades 6-12)Professional sports teams and Olympians are currently turning to yoga to improve their athletic performance and help avoid injuries. This camp includes daily yoga on the beach, in which we will move through a sequence of poses specific for athlete, focusing on flexibility, stability, and core strengthening postures. Philosophy and paired fun activities will be shared to help the athlete sharpen the mental aspects necessary for succeeding in any sport. THERAPEUTIC RECREATION

Adult Adventures(ages 21 and up, w/cognitive & neurological impairments)Adult Adventures is for adults with intellectual disabilities or neurological impairments who are able to function in a 2:1 camper to staff ratio. Campers must be able to take care of their own personal hygiene. Each day is filled with exciting activities such as: sports, games, arts and crafts, water activities, and more. Campers are grouped according to age and ability level. Adult Adventures offers 8 consecutive weeks starting on the week of June 17 and the final session is the week of August 5. Acceptance is based on application and interview assessment. Adult Adventures is an approved DDD provider under respite (day camp) for participants utilizing Supports or CCW Budgets. Adult Adventures on the Move(ages 21 and up, w/cognitive & neurological impairments)Our new travel camp is for individuals with developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, or neurological impairments who are able to function in a 3:1 camper to staff ratio. Campers must be able to take care of their own personal hygiene. Each day is filled with exciting trips to different destinations. Two weeks of camp are offered for participants who have previously attended Recreation Challenge or Adult Adventures within the past 2 summers. Capers Quest(ages 12-16, with Aspergers Syndrome)Ready for adventure? Capers Quest is a week-long camp for high-functioning individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Level 1). Campers must be able to attend to their own personal hygiene. Each day is filled with exciting activities: a scavenger hunt, archery, water activities, and more! We will be traveling to a different park Tuesday-Friday. Capers Quest will be held the week of August 19. Acceptance is based on application and interview assessment. Sea Horse - Advanced(ages 5-6)This is a stroke readiness level class. Prior to enrolling in the class, participants should be able to fully submerge their face and head in the water. They should also be able to swim using flutter kicks and arm strokes. At the end of the session, participants will be able to retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool and be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke. PLAYGROUNDSPlaygrounds are the perfect place for kids to run, jump, climb, swing, and more! Playground equipment offers a workout for different areas of your body. The Park System offers playgrounds at several parks and recreation areas throughout the county including Dorbrook Recreation Area, Colts Neck; Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Long Branch; and Shark River Park, Wall.

TRAILSTake a walk, jog or ride a bike! With over 130 miles of trails, the county parks have trails of all types, surfaces and lengths. From easy trails to challenging, there are trails throughout the county for any fitness type, including fitness trails that offer exercise stations at various spots along the trail. Trails are an easy way to get moving with the entire family.

TRY SOMETHING NEW! Have you ever played FootGolf? The Park System offers two FootGolf courses, one at Bel-Aire Golf Course in Wall and the other at Pine Brook Golf Course in Manalapan. This fun sport mixes golf with soccer by challenging players to see how many kicks it takes to get the soccer ball into a 21-inch cup. Formed in 1991, the Friends of the Parks is a non-profit charitable organization comprised of area citizens and businesses committed to the support of the Monmouth County Park System. In this day and age, when recreation funding must be stretched to meet the needs of a burgeoning population, membership dues, donations, and proceeds from special fundraisers furnish the financial assistance necessary to achieve a number of worthwhile goals.

Throughout beautiful Monmouth County, the Park System manages more than 30 parks, golf courses, recreation areas, historic sites, and stream valleys for your recreation and enjoyment. The Friends realize how important it is to protect and preserve the more than 15,000 acres of county parks and open space maintained by the Park System.

In events during the year, Friends meet and work with Park System staff and are able to share their views about the ways county parks can be improved and new programs developed.

The Friends can provide a new outlet for your creativity. Do you have special talents? Do you enjoy giving talks about your travels or areas of interest? With the contacts you make at the Friends of the Parks, you can find ways to share your interests with others. You can help the Friends support programs for the disadvantaged and encourage development of innovative activities.

Friends members receive publications such as the Park System Parks & Programs Guide and Green Heritage and enjoy borrowing privileges at the Deep Cut Gardens Horticultural Library. Members also receive discounts on many Friends events.
