The conference theme “Southerly Change” was chosen toreflect both our location and the direction of mental healthnursing in New Zealand. ProfessorDawnFreshwatercurrentlyholdsaprofessorialpositionwithinIHCS at Bournemouth Universityin the UK. She was also recentlyappointed to the Research Chairat Peel Health Campus, WesternAustralia. In her role as Chair inApplied Research (Mental Health)
atIHCS,shedirectstheCentreforAppliedResearchandhas been the lead for the Academic Research Centre inPracticeforMentalHealthandPrimaryCareforthelastfiveyears.SheisalsovisitingProfessorat theUniversityof Greenwich to Counselling and PsychotherapyProgrammesintheSchoolofSocialScience.
In 2002 Professor Freshwater was awarded Fellowshipof the Royal College of Nursing for her outstandingcontribution to nursing through research, reflectivepractice, clinical supervision and practice developmentin mental health. In June 2004 at the 26th AnnualConference of the International Association for HumanCaringProfessorFreshwaterwaselectedPresidentofthisAssociation.ThecentralpurposeoftheIAHCistoserveas an international, scholarly forum for all interested inthe advancement of the knowledge of human care andcaring. Professor Freshwater is also an active memberof Sigma Theta Tau; she received the DistinguishedResearcher Award in 2000 and developed the recentpublicationonReflectivePracticealongwiththereflectivepracticetaskforce.Dawnisalsoanexecutivememberofthe Florence Nightingale Foundation, where she sits ontheresearchscholarshippanel.
Professor Freshwater’s interest in research has resultedin an in-depth exploration of the use of qualitativeresearch methods, particularly reflexive and narrativeresearch methods. Since the early 1990s Dawn hasmaintainedaninterestintheapplicationandevaluationoftransformationalresearch,criticalreflexivity,pragmatism,reflective practice and clinical supervision, and inparticular its relation to evidence-based practice andthetherapeuticalliance.Thishasledtothedevelopment
and appraisal of a variety of approaches to evaluatingtheprovisionanddeliveryofhealthcare,withparticularemphasisonMentalHealth.HermostrecentresearchhasledtotheimplementationofaMentalHealthAwarenessTraining package for Prison Officers being adopted byPrisons throughout the UK. She currently leads thenationalimplementationofclinicalsupervisionacrosstheprison estate. Professor Freshwater led the high-profilePrincessDianaChildren’snursingresearchthataimedtoimprovethequalityof life forchildrenwith life-limitingillness. She is external reviewer for the Forensic MentalHealthFellowshipsandsitsonanumberofinternationalgrantreviewpanels.
InAustraliaProfessorFreshwaterwasinvitedtoserveontheExpertReviewCommitteeoftheAustralianPrimaryHealthCareInstitute.TheInstituteisaninitiativeoftheAustralian Government as part of its Primary HealthCare Research, Evaluation and Development Strategy.She has also been invited to disseminate her researchfindings to theAustralianPsychologicalSocietyandhasalready established a number of collaborative ventureswithindustrypartners.FundedresearchwithinAustraliaincludesanARCgrantrelatedtotheimpactoftheageingworkforceinSouthWest,WA;establishingacommunityintervention for suicide prevention in young men inrural Western Australia and developing a care pathwayforpatientsdiagnosedwithcancer inruralandregionalWesternAustralia.

Shirley Smoyak, a PsychiatricNurse, Health Care SociologistandProfessorofPublicHealth, isamember of the Rutgers UniversityOfficeofContinuingStudiesandtheRutgers Institute forHealth,HealthCarePolicyandAgingResearch.SheisafacultymemberintheUniversity
ofMedicineandDentistryofNewJersey,SchoolofPublicHealth,HealthSystems&PolicyDivision.Shehastaught,inher50yearsatRutgers,courses inmentalhealthandillness, psychiatric and mental health nursing, familydynamics,healthcareadministration,cultureandhealthand qualitative research methods. Her current researchprojectsare:“Stalking:CriminalandClinicalPerspectives”and “A National Analysis of Masters and Monitors ofState Psychiatric Hospitals”. She is writing a book aboutGreystoneParkPsychiatricHospital.
Dr.SmoyakhasbeenEditoroftheJournal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services since 1981. Dr.Smoyak is the author of several books, many refereedjournal articles, chapters, monographs and videotapes.She has lectured or been a guest professor in 50 of theStatesand15foreigncountries.
Dr. Smoyak chaired the court-appointed Doe v. KleinMonitoring Committee, which oversees Greystone ParkPsychiatric Hospital, Morris Plains, New Jersey; sheservedasaMonitorfor37years.Amongothereffortsforbetterpatientcare,shedevelopedaprogramforpatients,familiesandstaff.TheRutgers-NewarkChorusperformedaholidayconcertintheMainBuildingChapel.Thisisonepart of many efforts for citizens to appreciate what thehospitaldoesforNewJersey.
She is a Charter Member of the New Jersey Society ofCertified Clinical Specialists in Psychiatric and MentalHealth Nursing (1972) and a Charter Fellow of theAmerican Academy of Nursing (1973). The AAN hasawarded her the distinction of Living Legend. She hasserved on the Board of the New Jersey State Nurses
Association and as a delegate to the ANA conventionmany times. The NJSNA Excellence in Practice honorwas awarded to her in 1990 and she was the 1995NJSNAawardeeoftheRollofHonor.In2008,theMaltaPsychiatricNursesAssociationnamedher“DistinguishedLifetimeProfessor”.In2009,shewasawardedanHonoraryDoctoratebyKingstonUniversity,London,England.
Dr. Smoyak is a baccalaureate graduate of the RutgersUniversityCollegeofNursing(1957).Shewasinthefirstclass to finish the expanded two-year Master’s programforPsychiatricNursesdevelopedbyHildegardE.Peplau(1959).Herdoctorate,earnedin1970,isinSociology,withsub-specialtiesinfamilies,mentalillnessanddeviance.

HeleniscurrentlyaSeniorLecturerand Nurse Consultant in theSchool of Nursing, University ofAuckland. Her specialty practice isgeneral hospital Liaison Psychiatry.Helen has also taught, practisedand supervised others in thedevelopment of psychological
interventions, primarily Cognitive and BehaviourTherapysince1997,afterreceivingintensivetrainingandsecondmenttotheCognitiveTherapyCentreinNewcastle,UK.Helenhaspromotedtheinclusionofserviceusersinthe workforce, and has also been integral in developingtheserviceuser-clinicianalliancetodeliverworkshopsonrecovery, psychological interventions, and facilitation oftherapeuticgroupsforpeoplewhoheardistressingvoices.She has recently joined Waitemata DHB to facilitatethe use of psychological strategies by nurse specialistsfor people with long-term physical conditions. Helen’sresearchinterestsareintheroleoftheserviceuserwithineducation and clinical settings, and as co-researchers.HelensubmitsherdoctoralthesisinJune2011.
Professor Frances HughesRN, DNurs, ONZM, FANZCMHN, FNZCMHN
Frances has had 30 years ofexperience in the New Zealandhealth service, working as a healthclinician, manager and educator.A trained general and mentalhealth nurse she has a BA, MAand a doctorate and is a memberof many national and international
nursinggroups.Shehasplayedamajorroleinleadershipin Nursing in New Zealand and was instrumental inthe development of government policy around nurseprescribing,MOHprimaryhealthcare&ruralscholarshipschemes, nursing workforce, nurse practitioners &development of NZ Healthline. She also has beeninstrumental in the development of Mental HealthNursingbothprofessionally,clinically,educationallyoverthepasttwodecades.
SheheldthepositionoftheChiefAdvisor(Nursing)forthe Ministry of Health for several years. She has beeninvolvedininternationalresearchinareassuchasCostingNursing Turnover, primary mental health, stalking andisontheinternationalAdvisoryGroupfortheANCCinUSA.
Over the last few years Frances has been commissionedby governments, WHO and NGO’s for work in relationtoNursing,PolicyandMentalHealthinAustralia,SouthPacific,UK,CanadaandAsia.SheheldthefirstProfessorof Nursing and the Director of the Centre for MentalHealthPolicy,ResearchandServiceDevelopmentat theUniversityofAuckland.ShecontinuestoholdpositionasAdjunctProfessorforUniversityofTechnology–Sydney&AUTAuckland&VisitingProfessorstatusasUniversityofSydney.
FrancescurrentlyworksasthefacilitatorforWHO/WPROPacificIslandMentalHealthNetwork,part-timeclinicallyasamentalhealthnurseinaNGOmentalhealthserviceandshealsohasestablishedapublicpolicyconsultancybusiness.Thisinvolvesherworkingwithinternationalaidagencies includingNZAID,disabilityprovidergroupsinmentalhealthandintellectualdisabilityandgovernmentdepartmentsandMinistryofHealthasPrincipalClinicalAdvisorforOfficeoftheDirectorMentalHealth.
She is a fellow of the New Zealand College of MentalHealthNursesandtheAustralianCollegeofMentalHealthNurses.FrancesreceivedaQueensBirthdayHonour for2005,andwasmadeanOfficeroftheNewZealandOrderofMerit(ONZM)forherservicestoMentalHealth.
Dr Sue LutyBM, BS., BMedSci, PhD, FRANZCP
Dr Luty is a psychiatrist at theDepartment of PsychologicalMedicine, University of OtagoChristchurch, and the Mothersand Babies Perinatal Service, inChristchurch. She has a stronginterest in mood disorders,psychotherapy, women’s mental
health, perinatal psychiatry and infant mental health.Hercurrent research includespsychotherapy forbipolar

disorder, metabolic monitoring, psychotherapy process,and self harm and suicide in mood disorders. She isalso an expert trainer and supervisor of InterpersonalPsychotherapy.Shehasover50publicationsonaspectsofmood disorders and social functioning, and has writtenseveral book chapters on similar subjects. Dr Luty coconvenesandhostsabiennialsymposiumonPerspectivesof Women’s Mental Health in Christchurch which isnationallyacclaimed.Sheteachesundergraduatemedicalstudents and has developed a broad based postgraduatecurriculum in reproductive mental health, perinatalpsychiatry and psychotherapy training, plus teaches incollaboration with the centre for postgraduate nursingstudies.
Dr Jane Nugent Psychiatric Medical Officer - West Coast District Health Board
Jane Nugent is a respected healtheducator, with a large amount ofexperience in nurse education atboth graduate and post-graduatelevels. She is a qualified nurse whohas had 25 years experience in avariety of clinical and academic
roles. Further to her nursing qualifications Jane alsohas completed a BSc majoring in pharmacology anda postgraduate diploma completed with distinctionin pharmacology. Jane’s special areas of interest arepsychopharmacologyandalsodruginteractions.
Professor Ritchie PoultonFRSNZ
ProfessorRichiePoultonisDirectorof the Dunedin MultidisciplinaryHealth and Development ResearchUnit which conducts the Dunedinlongitudinal study, one of the mostdetailed studies of human healthand development ever undertaken.A multidisciplinary, longitudinal
study of 1,037 babies born in Dunedin during 1972/73,theStudymembershavebeenfollowedupsincebirth,at
agethree,theneverytwoyearstoage15,andatages18,21,26,and32.The latestassessmentphase,atage38, iscurrentlyunderway(2010/2012).In2007,heestablishedand became a Co-Director of the National Centre forLifecourse Research, a research centre based at theUniversityofOtagoinDunedin,butwithpartnerslocatedat universities across New Zealand and internationally.Hehaspublishedmorethan150peer-reviewedscientificpapers, with many appearing in leading internationaljournals. His research interests are: developmentalpsychopathology, gene X environment prediction ofcomplex disorders, and psychosocial determinants ofchronic physical disease. In 2010, he was elected as aFellowoftheRoyalSocietyofNewZealandandwasthejointrecipientoftheRSNZDameJoanMetgeMedalforexcellenceandbuildingrelationshipsinthesocialscienceresearchcommunity.
Graham RoperMental Health advocate
GrahamRoperwasborninAucklandand currently lives in Dunedin.In 1981 he started a career in theAmbulance Service which took himthroughout New Zealand. Grahamtrained and worked as an advancedparamedicworkingincrisissituationsand has over 30 years experience
in pre hospital emergency care. More recently, the past5 years, he has worked as a Consumer Advisor withinMental Health and Community Services at a DHB. Healso provides the consumer perspective on a number ofboardsincludingtheRoyalAustralianandNewZealandCollege of Psychiatrists, the Committee for TherapeuticInterventions and Evidence based Practice. He hasalso recently completed a term on the Mental HealthCommission Advisory Group and chaired the NationalAssociationofMentalHealthServiceConsumerAdvisers.
Graham’s ‘expertise’ comes from his formal paramedictraining,leadershiproleswithinthementalhealthsectorandthelivedexperiencesofmentalillness.

At theMihi Whakatau, the takata whenua shared their manawithustoprotectusduringourstay.Intheporoporoaki,themanaishandedbacktothetakatawhenua.Itisalsoa chance for manuhiri to thank the takata whenua, andthosewhohavefedthem,inbothbodyandmind,duringthetimeofthehui.
