Invitation
On behalf of the Nelson Marlborough branch of the New Zealand Dental Association I am excited to
invite you to Reflections on Care, the NZDA Conference 2011.
For the first time the NZDA conference is being hosted in Marlborough and, to celebrate the lifestyle
that we proudly have here, the conference organising committee has planned a programme that
reflects not only the care we provide to our patients but how we take care of ourselves. There will be
an intellectual and thought provoking scientific programme brought to us by excellent international
and local speakers presenting clinically related topics. To balance this there will be sessions with a
bent towards self care and lifestyle. This includes a unique new addition to the programme of the
two optional off-site lifestyle sessions.
The trade display will be onsite with the industry well represented for your convenience, while the
social programme promises to be of the highest standard as it showcases some of Marlborough’s
quintessential qualities.
I look forward to seeing many of you in Marlborough in August and hope you will be able to take an
extra day or two to experience some more of our wonderful area while you are here.
Dr Andrea Koorey
Conference Chairperson

Advancements in CADCAM in the New Zealand dental practice
CADCAM advancements are impacting surgeries and laboratories in
New Zealand, and patient’s expectations are increasing. A dentist has
many crown and inlay restorative and production options available.
• With an understanding of the materials and methods available,
dentists are then equipped to a wider range of restorative options
for their patients.
• With stronger ceramics and stronger bonding systems are we
able to use less destructive preparation designs along with more
aesthetic materials?
• What are the long term results?
• What impact does this have on our current methods?
• Is bonding easier than it used to be?
• Which generation is providing better results than others?
• What do digital impressions mean for your practice?
This one-day seminar will provide NZ dentists with an overview of
the CADCAM methods that are available in New Zealand. You will be
enabled to assess which options suit you now, and what is appropriate
for the future. Whether it is a one-appointment in-surgery method, or
an impression sent to your laboratory, you will be able to assess the
suitability for your patients requirements.

Kevin LewisWhen business meets dentistryFacts, myths and opportunities for tomorrow’s dental practice
Change always creates winners and losers. A changing world requires a re-think of our business strategies if we are to succeed and maintain the impetus of success. How does the dental practitioner adopt and adapt the current ideas from the world of business, and apply them to the dental practice setting, and how do we preserve our ethics and professionalism
when difficult business decisions need to be made – and still come out on top? This seminar picks the brains of several business gurus and
teases out some great tips for taking us through challenging times.

Phil Gifford
Phil Gifford is the first person to twice win the New Zealand Sports
Journalist of the Year award. He hosts the rugby show “Front Row”
on Radio Sport every Saturday, writes a weekly column in the Sunday
Star-Times, and airs sports comments on NewstalkZB.
Phil has reported on every Rugby World Cup since 1987, the Olympic
and Commonwealth Games, and every rugby test played in New
Zealand since 1977. He has covered rugby in Australia, South Africa,
Argentina, France, Great Britain, Ireland and Samoa.
The creator of satirical rugby character Loosehead Len, he is the
author of 14 books, hosted No.1 breakfast radio shows in Auckland
and Christchurch, and won 12 radio awards over three decades in
New Zealand and Australasia.
Behind the scenes at the Rugby World Cup
Phil Gifford, who has reported at every Rugby World Cup, will give a
unique insight into the tournament, giving the answers to questions
you may not have even thought of asking. Why did a long retired
pop star have to sing at the opening game in 1987? Who was the
All Black who wished he hadn’t been at the 1991 Cup? What was
Andrew Mehrtens secret wish after 1995? Who was the All Black
coach to whom English was a second language? Who feared the
kiss of life in the press box in 2007? The World Cup as you’ve never
heard it before.

Mike Hutcheson

sharp right turn and studying Law, Mike Hutcheson discovered
advertising and went on to win the Reader’s Digest Scholarship as
New Zealand’s Most Outstanding Young Advertising Man.

of teams that have produced many of New Zealand’s memorable
advertising campaigns. In early 2003 Mike launched The Lighthouse
Ideas Company, an ideas company which will “dress people up in
their Sunday best”.
Stories from the near future
This presentation will explore, in a humorous way, how - although
we live in a time of rapid change – at a fundamental human level
everything stays the same. We look at how creativity is bred out of us at
school and how life is dominated by bureaucrats. How different minds
work and how we can get to know ourselves better to understand
what makes us happy. We look at the meaning of creativity and how
we can collaborate to get the best out of the people around us.

Lifestyle Sessions

The Cheese Files: an insiders look at the art of cheese-making
Time: 11.45am - 1.45pm
Cost: $139 per person
Coach transport and a lunchbox included, group size
minimum 10, maximum 30.
Join our local Marlborough cheese-maker for a fun and informative,
hands on, cheese class. Talk with the cheese-maker about how the
cheeses are made:
• What makes a blue go blue
• How you get the distinctive taste/smell into washed-rind cheeses
• How cheese (like wine) reflects the character of the land and
some of the secrets of traditional cheese-making (like how in the
old days, we used to bump up the level of blue mould spores in
the maturing chamber, by putting in some old leather boots...!!)
• Plenty of time for cheesy questions.
Then get hands-on as we explore a number of great recipes and
create two different cheeses. By the end of the class the group
will learn around four different recipes for everything from ricotta
to parmesan. Complete the class with a delicious cheese-tasting,
accompanied by award-winning Marlborough wines. A wonderful
wine and food experience.
Greenfingers: behind the scenes of successful strawberries
Time: 11.45am - 1.45pm
Cost: $89 per person
Coach transport and a
lunchbox included, group size
minimum 20, maximum 40.
The perfect outing for the budding (and keen) gardener. Visit the
successful Hedgerows Hydroponics for an educational hands on tour
and talk. Hedgerows aim for stunning strawberries on the market
before all others with the aim of first fruit by mid-August. So it is the
perfect time for study as plants will just be starting to produce, while
others will just be flowering and fruit forming.
Learn the principles, logistics, equipment and hands-on plant
management and picking/packing techniques for hydroponics.
Experience the lifestyle issues of this family run business with hands
on participation.
This tour will include a tasting, a take-away pack of hydroponic plant
food solution and a strawberry plant (that would grow in the ground
if you don’t have a hydroponic kit on the dental surgery window sill!)
Saturday 13 August: 11.15am – 1.45pm
Essence: the art of great food
Time: 11.15am - 1.45pm
Cost: $179 per person
Coach transport, lunch and
beverages included, group size minimum 20,
maximum 30.
Journey out through the wine region to your own luxury lodge where
the resident chef will excite and inspire the senses with fabulous
wine and food match creations. Enjoy an interactive “classroom”
style session with a local winemaker and resident chef, sampling
a selection of wines all matched with local foods. This structured
tasting event is served “mini-plate” style over multiple courses with
the winemaker explaining the characteristics of the wines and the
chef describing the basic principles of the food.
We will discuss the classic wine and food match, why it works and
why it doesn’t. A sensational event over three courses of matched
wine and food – the perfect event for the “foodie” wanting to extend
their knowledge base on wine and food matching.
