Adjectives & Adverbs

Adjectives

Adjectives go before noun:

a long journey loudmusic an amazing vacation

Adjectives don’t change for singular and plural:

a fast car fast cars (NoT: fasts cars)

Before nouns, we don’t usually put ‘and’ between adjectives:

a big bad wolf

Sometimes we use more than one adjective in front of a noun:

“He was a nice, clever, young guy.”

“She bought a small, black, wooden coffee table.”

1. Opinion: delicious, pretty, amazing, awesome, boring, etc.

2. Size: large, medium, small, tall, short, tinny, etc.

3. Age: old, middle age, young, modern, traditional, etc.

4. Shape: round, heavy, long, square, narrow, etc.

5. Color: black, blue, purple, pink, red, brown, yellow, green, etc.

6. Origin: British, American, Canadian, etc.

7. Material: wooden, metal, glass, plastic, gold, iron, etc.

8. Purpose: sewing (machine), sleeping (bag), swimming (pool), etc.

We use adjectives after be/get/become/seem:

Be careful!

I’m tired and I’m getting hungry.

As the film went on, it became more and more boring.

Your friend seems very nice.

We also use adjectives to say how somebody/ something

You look tired./ I feel tired./ She sounds tired.

ADVERBS

Adverbs are connected with other words - for example verbs. Some adverbs tell you

how something happens. These often end in ‘ly’:

You can learn English easily.

quick – quick

serious – serious

quiet – quiet

heavy – heavi

bad – bad

happy – happi

possible – possib

We also use adverbs before adjectives and other adverbs.

reasonably cheap (adverb + adjective)

terribly sorry (adverb + adjective)

incredibly quickly (adverb + adverb)

Examples:

It’s a reasonably cheap restaurant and the food is extremely good.

I’m terribly sorry. I didn’t mean to push you.

Maria learns languages incredibly quickly.

The examinations was surprisingly easy.

- “Your English is good.”

- “You speak English well.”

We use well (not good) with PAST PARTICIPLE:

well- dressed well-known well-educated well-paid

- “George’s father is a well-known writer.”

But well is also an adjective with the meaning ‘in good health’:

- “How are you today?” - “I am well, thanks.”

FAST/ HARD/ LATE

These words are both adjectives and adverbs:

Adjective

Peter is a very fast runner.

Kate is a hard worker.

I was late.

Adverbs

Peter can run very fast.

Kate works hard.

I got up late this morning.

Lately = recently

“Have you seen Paul lately?”

Hardly = very little, almost not. Study these examples:

- Sarah wasn’t very friendly at the party. She hardly spoke to me.

(she spoke to me very little, almost not at all)

- We’ve only met once or twice. We hardly know each other.

hard and hardly are different. Compare:

- He tried hard to find a job, but he had no luck. (= he tried a lot, with a lot of

effort)

- I am not surprised he didn’t find a job. He hardly tried to find one. (= he tried

very little)

We can use hardly + any/anybody/anyone/anything/anywhere:

A: How much money have you got?

B: Hardly any. (=very little, almost none)

- There is hardly anything in the fridge.

- These two cameras are very similar. There’s hardly any difference between

them.
