The FDA recently approved a new drug for the treatment of “open-angle glaucoma,” which is the most common form of the eye disease. Someti-
mes referred to as “chronic glaucoma,” open-angle glaucoma is particularly dangerous because it can progress gradually and go unnoticed. Affecting 70% to 80% of those suffering from the disease, open-angle glaucoma typi-cally occurs among individuals over the age of 50, and its risk of occurrence increases with age. It is characterized by a clogged drainage system in the eye, which results in a buildup in aqueous fl uid and rise in intraocular pres-sure. The new drug for treatment of this form of the disease, tafl uprost, works by reducing inner eye pressure.
P.S. Open-angle glaucoma is known as “the silent thief of sight” because it may not present noticeable symptoms; an eye exam is necessary for diagnosis.
