RELATING THEORY AND DESIGN(or “applying” theory to design and vice versa)

CATEGORIES OF THEORY

CATEGORIES OF THEORY1) Explanatory Theory: The general or abstract principles of a body of facts in order to explain phenomena.

EXPLANATORY THEORYA 2x8 framing member will perform the same in Boston, New York, Scranton, and Los Angeles. 2x8’s are generally known to performin specific ways.

NORMATIVE THEORY2x8’s are always space 16” o.c. While 17” o.c. would work just as well,it is standard practice to space them at 16” o.c. The entire buildingindustry follows suit (everything is manufactured at 16” intervals).

DESIGN-POLEMICAL THEORYWhile it is common to space 2x8’s @16” o.c., 2x12’s at 24“ are much better. I’m going to show you why. I want to establish a new norm.

THE POLEMICAL CHALLENGES THE NORMATIVEIN ORDER TO TEST NEW IDEAS AND ESTABLISH NEW NORMS.

ARE YOU BUILDING THEORY, APPLYING THEORY, OR BOTH? (MOST LIKELY, BOTH). YOUR RESEARCH DESIGN SHOULD CLEARLY ARTICULATE YOUR PURPOSE(S).

GREAT! What do you propose in its place? From LEED to...B-LEED?

THEORY TO THEORYWhile a city is not a city without its interior spaces, interior architecturerarely addresses - nor is addressed by - the urban realm. I proposean Urban Interior Architecture to remedy the problem.

Going from Interior Architecture to Urban Interior Architecture is an attempt to establish a new norm. Good start. The REAL work is now establishing the criteria for what an Urban Interior Architecture is(an explanatory theory) and proposing a project to test those definitions.

THEORY TO THEORYInterior architecture does not fully engage with nor producePLACE because it is too concerned with PROGRAM. In orderfor interior architecture to engage and produce PLACE most fully, it must consider PROGRAM as secondary and/or eliminate it all together.

WHOA! This is intense! Yet this falls directly in line with “Post-Functionalism” as proposed by Peter Eisenman in the 1970s and does not necessarily propose new theory. Rather, the interesthere seems to be in new applications of theory (applied to Interior Architecture).

THEORY TO DESIGN

THEORY TO DESIGNInterior architecture can learn a lot from fashion. This thesis will investigate the aesthetic implications of fashion - specifically the cosmetic - on interior architecture.

THEORY TO DESIGNInterior architecture can learn a lot from fashion. This thesis will investigate the aesthetic implications of fashion - specifically the cosmetic - on interior architecture. There is no real interest in establishing new normativetheory nor any polemical intent here...at least not yet. BUT there is a clear interest in interdisciplinarily applying established theory to practice in new and exciting ways.

This might change as Josh digs deeper into aesthetic and fashion theory.

DESIGN TO THEORY

DESIGN TO THEORYIn 100 years, we will have completely destroyed the environment.Architecture and urbanism need to respond (and radically) to this now by preemptively making new environments.

DESIGN TO THEORYIn 100 years, we will have completely destroyed the environment.Architecture and urbanism need to respond (and radically) to this now by preemptively making new environments. There is no theory drawn from yet. But, there is surely some explanatory theories that corroborate the first part of this statement. There were also plenty of design-polemical theories that have dealt with this issue in the history of architecture.

In any case, Steven will likely establish new theories through design as opposed to Lizzie, who will probably establish a theory before designing anything. And both will revise everything throughout the process.

DESIGN TO THEORYLandscape urbanism in great and all but it doesn’t think much of architecture. Architecture is an important player in any landscape urbanist project; without it, landscapeurbanism cannot engage the city in the fullest waypossible. There is no theory here, just a critical position. The burden is on Victoria to make her case through designbefore making any theoretical contributions.

BUILDING THEORY AND APPLYING IT TO DESIGN(OR BUILDING IT FROM DESIGN) IS NOT A LINEAR PROCESS.
