The Difference between a Relationship that is Nourishing vs.

Toxic“Love...does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it

is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs...”

(1 Corinthians 13 4-6)

There are several barriers that can break down a relationship. We see these all the time and we are aware that they are destructive. However, when we are a part of a relationship that is unhealthy, we sometimes over look things or even worse, we don’t even realize that these barriers are unhealthy and destructive factors in our relationships.

The world would be very fortunate if all relationships were “nourishing” or healthy. However, we know that many relationships are “toxic” or unhealthy.

These are some examples of relationship barriers: Fear Lack of sense of personal or sexual identity Fear that our faults will be discovered, creating a sense

of guilt Afraid to reveal negative feelings such as anger,

hostility and resentment Past resentments and past expectations brought into

the present Unresolved conflicts with childhood friends, brothers,

and/or sisters The assumption others will expect too much, or too little

from us Lack of self-esteem/self-care and allowing exploitation

by others Unhealthy dependency on another for approval Being naive (where people don’t understand what they

are getting involved with) Secrecy
