SURVIVOR SPOTLIGHT: SCOTT SCHOENTHAL I had the honor of meeting Scott Schoen-thal, 34, on my first day as an intern at Gwinnett Medical Center’s Cancer Sup-port Center. Scott’s incredibly humble and light-heart-ed personality radiates. Within his first ses-sion of the Cancer Transitions Survivorship program at GMC, Scott candidly spoke about his cancer experience and how it had shaped him. Scott is not just a cancer survivor; he’s a cancer warrior. Scott was first diagnosed with cancer at 18, while a freshman at Middle Tennessee State University. Scott noticed a lump on his neck and was diagnosed with Hodg-kin’s Lymphoma. After treatment, Scott returned to as normal of a life as possible. At 24, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Following treatment, Scott met his now wife, Misty. He said, “She never looked at me like I was sick.” After his treatment, Scott was told he would never have children. Today, Scott and Misty have two beautiful, happy, healthy children — Brayden, 5, and Byrnli, 2. After Scott’s second round of treatment, he got involved in Relay For Life. “I never made cancer who I was,” he said. After participating in the Survivor Lap, he began to realize how profoundly cancer had impacted his life. “I was changed forever,” he said. Although he finished treatment, got mar-ried and had two children, cancer was not finished with Scott. In October 2013, Scott was diagnosed with metastatic germ cell cancer and ultimately spent 17 days in the

hospital fighting for his life. Once again, Scott defied the odds and went into remis-sion. In 2014, Scott went for a check-up and found 10 spots on his brain. With his fourth diagnosis, Scott thought, “What do we have to do now?” He began radiation. Upon completion, he enrolled in the Cancer Transitions Sur-vivorship program at GMC, and he found out he once again would have to undergo treatment, this time for three types of germ cell cancer, his fifth diagnosis. After weeks of high-dose chemotherapy, Scott returned home, fully in remission. Although it is clear that cancer left both physical and emotional marks on his life, it is also clear that Scott has no intention of letting cancer take over his life. Scott smiles as he talks about the next step in his life and said he feels he has a “bulletproof vest on.”

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.Relay For Life is more than just a fund-raiser. It’s a life-changing experience. At Relay, every person in the community has a chance to celebrate, remember, and fight back. And every person who participates joins others around the globe as part of this worldwide movement to end cancer. Everyone’s reason to Relay is as unique as their own personal story. At Relay, you can find healing, comfort, and support from others who have faced cancer or who have lost a loved one to the disease. You have a chance to meet people in the community who are equally as passion

ate about finding an end to cancer in our lifetime. You can thank all the people who have done so much to support you through your personal cancer experi-ence. And you can gather together with friends, family, and colleagues to laugh, cry, and create lasting memories. No matter why you take part in Relay, however, one thing is clear: with every step you take, you are helping the Ameri-can Cancer Society save lives. With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer – we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every com-munity. Each person who shares the Relay experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten the lives of our loved ones or claim an-other year of anyone’s life.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY PATIENT PROGRAMS & SERVICESPATIENT LODGING PROGRAMSGetinge the best care sometimes means cancer parents must travel away from home. This can place an extra emotional and financial burden on parents and caregivers during an already challenging me. The American Cancer Society is trying to make this difficult situation easier for both cancer parents and their families through Hope Lodges.

REACH TO RECOVERY (PERSONAL CANCER GUIDE)If you have breast cancer, you may want to talk to someone who knows what you’re feeling – someone who has “been there.” Through our Reach To Recovery program, we can match you with a volunteer who will talk with you about coping with your breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

ROAD TO RECOVERY (RIDES TO TREATMENT)Every day, cancer parents need rides to treatment. Some may not be able to drive themselves, and family and friends cannot always help. Our Road To Recovery program provides rides to parents who have no way to get to their cancer treatment.

PATIENT NAVIGATOR PROGRAM (PERSONAL CANCER GUIDE)The American Cancer Society Patent Navigator Program connects you with a patent navigator at a cancer treatment center. You can talk one-on-one with a patent navigator about your situation. This person will listen in your time of need. Call us at 1-800-227-2345, and we can tell you more about this program.

LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER(HELP WITH APPEARANCE-RELATED SIDE EFFECTS OF TREATMENT) In a Look Good Feel Better session, trained volunteer cosmetologists teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry.

I CAN COPE (ONLINE CANCER EDUCATION CLASSES)If you or someone you love gets cancer, you will have questions. Our I Can Cope online classes can help you and your loved ones learn about cancer and how to take care of yourselves. The more you know about cancer, the better you can handle your treatment and decisions about your care.
