PCI BootRom4.18.00

Support for Post MemoryManagement

Support for more LSI53C1010 hostadapter versions

Extended backward compatibility forEDD, Enhanced Disk Drive 3.0 speci-fication packets size.

Changed method of handling INT13and INT40 chaining to improvecompatibility with new generation ofsystem BIOS

Changed banner display for Ultra160devices

Ability to locate free memory whenPost Memory Management is notsupported

Added a Configuration Utilityselection via Global Settings to work-around the system BIOS that improp-erly handles INT40. In most cases, you will want the default hook on Inter-rupt 40h, but some PCs will hangwhen INT40 is hooked, so an alterna-tive setting is now provided.

Gave NVS a higher priority for globalsettings than NVM so that settingswould be more persistent.

Prior versions of this software may notwork with the newest versions of theAMI system BIOS due to interruptchanining methods that conflict. Thisversion of the BIOS is "aware" of itschaining environment and handles theinterrupt chain properly.

While less convenient than the key-pad "+" and "-", some users prefer touse the keys on the top row of themain keyboard area. For their conve-nience, support for the "+" and "-"keys on the top row was added.

Ultra160 devices that support differentsynchronous offsets when operated atless than Ultra160 do not always

report the correct offset for the nego-tiated speed. Checks were added toensure the negotiations result in aworking offset and speed.

The BIOS now forces integritybetween the Termination Control set-tings as follows: if MFG Data indicatesthat termination is controllable, thenthe NVM default will be auto/on; oth-erwise, the default is off.

The Configuration Utility now allowsconfiguration of adapters in the bootorder which have been disabled forthe current boot.

The Configuration Utility no longerallows narrow/Ultra160 as a selection.Ulta160 is possible only on a widebus.

Supports Parallel Protocol Request(PPR)

Permits use of command line optionsto increase the negotiated synchro-nous transfer rate or the negotiatedwidth.

Devices that report data overruns orunderruns are now detected.

Added timer to check if the reset lineis still active during a SCSI bus reset.

Added bus mode reportingcapabilities.

I/Os are managed properly on remov-able-media devices that receive sensedata indcating a power on, reset, orbus device reset.

The system now handles switching anLVD-capable part from non-HVD toHVD properly.

If the reset bit is set when attemptingto abort SCRIPTS, the abort com-pletes successfully.

When disconnects are allowed on anautomatic request sense with heavyI/Os, the first request sense com-pletes successfully now.

The value of the STEST4 register thatwas saved during the last modechange is used when SCRIPTS arerunning instead of reading theregister.

After a phase mismatch in messageout or command phase, SCRIPTS arerestarted at ClearAck instead of Phas-eSwitch. This clears ATN so thedevice won’t immediately go back to amessage out phase when the mes-sage out byte count has been zeroedout.

SDMS Software/Version Number Release Restrictions

Problems and Workarounds in thisrelease

PCI Boot ROM4.18.00

Versions of the Boot ROM prior to4.05 cannot detect a BIOS BootSpecification (BBS) enabled BootROM that is loaded before the BBSversion. The BBS enabled ROM candetect both previous versions, andBBS versions that are loaded beforeit.

When operated in a non-BBS PC, thissoftware will operate in a “legacy”mode. Legacy in this definition meansthat Spin Up and El Torito CD bootwithout BBS will execute. BBS will beignored.

In general, advanced operating sys-tems do not use INT13 after they areloaded. Until those operating systemsare rewritten to have knowledge ofthe BIOS Boot Specification (BBS),problems with drive order may occuron BBS-enabled platforms.

*******************************************Problems and Workarounds inthis release (Continued)*******************************************Problem: On some machines, theCTRL keys (A, E, and N) cannot beentered before the BIOS initializes.

Solution: Hold down the CTRL keyduring the boot up process and theBIOS will wait until it is released. Thedesired key (A, E, and N) can then betapped and released with CTRL. Onmany PCs, the best time to depressthe CTRL key is during memory scan.

Problem: On some machines, theCTRL-C message that displays whenall adapters are off disappears beforeit can be responded to.

Solution: Hold down the CTRL keyduring the boot up process and waitfor the system to execute the LSILogic BIOS. Then tap the C key.

Problem: Windows NT 4.0 and earlierreplace INT13h calls with their owndrivers which causes the drive numberordering selected by the user to bereplaced by internal numbering.

Solution: On BBS enabled PCs, it willbe necessary to make the Boot Con-nection list match the list in orderpresented at Boot ROM initializationtime.

Problem: Boot Connection listsgreater than 8 cause a system BIOSfailure and will not boot up.

Solution: Use less than 8 boot con-nection devices. Caution: Even devicesthat do not exist can cause a failure. The system BIOS creates an entry foran IDE driver even if it does not exist. This means that the limit is actually 7SCSI drives in many instances.

Problem: If Adaptec’s driver is loadedfirst and all adapters are disabled inour BIOS, the CTRL-A sequence willinvoke Adaptec’s configuration utilityrather than enabling all of ouradapters.

Solution: Use the CTRL-E keypressinstead.

Problem: On some machines withAMI system BIOS, the assignment ofIRQs 14 and 15 may cause theadapter to fail.

Solution: Do not assign IRQ 14 or 15to PCI slots with a LSI53C8XXadapter.

PCI Flash Utility1.13.00

Boards with Flash parts and LSILogic LSI53C885 Revision 0 andRevision 1 chips cannot be updatedacross a PCI bridge. Installation ofthese boards on a PCI bridge willresult in a system halt upon executionof the Flash 8x5 utility.

Boards with flash parts and LSI LogicLSI53C875 Revision 0 and Revision 1chips installed on PCI Bus 1 of aPEER Bus system cannot be flashed.

Maximum flash image size is 256Kbytes.

Boot diskette must not load any mem-ory managers.

Problem: Only LSI8951U cards willflash correctly in bus 0 of the Proliant7000 system.

Solution: Use another PCI bus in thesystem to flash other LSI Logic hostadapter cards.

Problem: Memory managers mayconflict with mapping memory space tothe flash ROM.

Solution: Run the program from abootable floppy diskette that does notload a memory manager.

Problem: Low memory error handlingis not working correctly.

Solution: Ensure a minimum of 200Kbytes free memory is available.

Problem: The F2 SCSI BIOS file listoption has a potential limitation. Onlythe first 18 BIOS files are user-select-able from the F2 menu.

Solution: If more than 18 BIOS imagefiles are required, spread them into dif-ferent directories and enter thatdirectory path prior to pressing the F2key.

Problem: Cards do not flash wheninstalled in the 64-bit PCI slots on Pro-liant 7000.

Solution: Move them to another PCIbus in order to update them with a newimage.

Problem: Cards do not flash in certainPCI slots on the HP LH4 system witha network card is installed.

Solution: Use another PCI bus in thesystem to flash other LSI Logic cards.

ASPI8XX.SYS4.10.00

None Problem: The DOS ASPI Managerhas experienced problems when a PCISCSI adapter has been assigned anIRQ level of 14 and Windows version3.1x is run. This is a system BIOSproblem.

Solution: Refer to the Boot ROM sec-tion regarding problems when the userassigns IRQ 14 to a PCI device.

Problem: QEMM 7.5 works withoutDOS-UP and stealth mapping. Whenthese features are enabled, the systemcannot find the command interpreter ordevice drivers.

Solution: Reboot the system with afloppy diskette, and manually edit outthe changes made to the CONFIG.SYSfile. Do not use QEMM 7.5 with DOS-UP and stealth mapping enabled.Problem: APSI8XX.SYS will hang(waits forever) during boot if the follow-ing condition exists if termination is notpresent on the SCSI bus and has notbeen disabled.

Solution: Provide required terminationto prevent the hang condition.

Problem: When using the /DC with the/D command line option, both the /Dand the /DC actions will occur.

Solution: None. Displays only ver-bose information on the screen anddoes not cause any side effects.

SYMDISK.SYS4.04.00

This driver no longer supports drivesthat have INT13h support beforeSYMDISK.SYS is loaded.

For removable media, SYMDISK.SYSassumes a 2048-byte sector size as adefault when no media is present.

Note: When using the SYMCONFIGUtility, the help text for SYMDISK.SYSunder the sector size switch usagestates: “In the case of removablemedia, SYMDISK.SYS assumes a512-byte sector size when no mediais present.” For all versions ofSYMDISK.SYS 4.03.00 and greaterthis statement is incorrect. Thedefault has been changed to 2048bytes.

Problem: When repartitioning a used1 Kbyte media, the formatted partitionsize is 4 times the actual size. Thisproblem occurs only on Magneto Opti-cal (MO) devices that use 1 Kbyteblock size media.

Solution: Low-level format devicesthat use 1 Kbyte media by using a for-mat utility. Recommend usingASPIFMT and/or BIOS Format Utility.

Problem: Cannot format 1024, 2048,or 4096 sector size HDDs or MOs withSYMDISK.SYS.

Solution: Use an earlier version(4.00.04.20) of SYMDISK to format thenon-512 sector size drives. Once for-matted, SYMDISK.SYS behavesnormally.

ASPI Format Utility4.01.00

This utility formats the drive in thenative sector size for that drive (notnecessarily 512-byte sector sizes).

Note: The BIOS Format Utility for-mats all drives to 512-byte sectorsize.

Problem: The ASPIFMT Utility screenis unreadable due to a possible graph-ics card problem.

Solution: ASPI Format Utility requiresa VGA monitor.

SYMDIAG (VerifyUtility) 4.02.00

None Problem: The Sony CDU-920S showsup as a Magneto Optical device.

Solution: None.

Problem: When locating SCSI CD-ROM drives, the event log MSG sub-section may misstate that no CD-ROMdrives were found.

Solution: None.

SYM53C8XX InstallUtility4.05.00

When the EMM386.EXE version 4.48or lower is used, the /noems switch isset, and the drivers are loaded high, the system may hang. Several alter-natives can be utilized to avoid asystem hang up (system waitsforever):

1. Upgrade EMM386.EXE to version4.49 for the executable file; or

2. Remove the /noems switch; or

3. Load the device driver low.

Problem: If Selectable is chosen, newly added drivers are inadvertentlyloaded in front of the ASPI8XX.SYS-driver. This occurs when some but notall of the drivers had been loaded in aprevious installation.

Solution: Edit the CONFIG.SYS fileand manually move SYMCD.SYS orSYMDISK.SYS after theASPI8XX.SYS driver.

Problem: If multiple /D switches existon the MSCDEX.EXE line in theAUTOEXEC.BAT file, the install pro-gram may not correctly update boththe SYMCD.SYS /D switch and theMSCDEX.EXE line correctly.

Solution: Manually check all multiple/D switches to ensure they match, which is necessary for the drive to berecognized.

SYM53C8XXConfiguration Utility4.02.00

When using the SYMCONFIG Utility, the help text for SYMDISK.SYSunder the sector size switch usagestates:

“In the case of removable media,SYMDISK.SYS assumes a 512-bytesector size when no media ispresent.”

For all versions SYMDISK.SYS4.03.00 and greater this statement isincorrect. The default has beenchanged to 2048 bytes.

Problem: When the MSCDEX lineexists in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and isrewritten during the configuration pro-cess, /DCDROM_NAME is placed beforethe MSCDEX key word. Thus, theCDROM driver is not recognized.

Solution: Manually edit the MSCDEXline, and move /DCDROM_NAME afterthe MSCDEX key work. For lostCDROM, manually reinstall theCDROM drive. Enter/DLOST_CDROM_NAME after the MSC-DEX line.

Windows NT FlintSYMC8XX.SYS4.15.00

When upgrading to a newer versionof Windows NT, make sure that theFLINT driver is active. It is possiblethat a previous driver like NCRS-DMS.SYS, NCRC810.SYS,SYMC810.SYS, or an older versionof SYMC8XX.SYS may instead beactive, even after upgrading.

In this case, you should delete the olddriver using Start-->Settings -->Con-trol Panel-->SCSI Adapters andactivate the newer one. To check theversion of the driver, highlight the filein Windows Explorer and selectFile-->Properties.

Device exclusion functionality (drivernot controlling an 8XX device) wasremoved from the driver. Deviceexclusion cannot be performed withinthe miniport driver.

For Windows NT 4.0 and above, theFLINT driver supports the WindowsNT limitation of 255 scatter/gatherentries (or 1 Mbyte - 8 Kbytes). Thedefault maximum size is 64 Kbytes, but this can be increased by using aregistry entry.

Some older SCSI devices do notadhere to the SCSI specification anddo not support Domain Validation.Domain Validation can be disabled forthese devices individually by usingthe SCSI BIOS Configuration Utility. The other alternative is to disableDomain Validation for the entire SCSIchannel by using a registry entry.

Nextreme RAID software requires anLSI Logic PCI RAID BIOS to beactive on the system.

Problem: The SCRIPTS “Store” com-mand does not properly flush theprefetch buffer.

Solution: Devices that supportLoad/Store commands (LSI53C810A,LSI53C860, LSI53C875, LSI53C876,LSI53C885, LSI53C895) have PCIprefetch turned off in this release.

Problem: When using an LSI53C101066MHz revision A1 device, multipleSCSI devices running at differentspeeds may experience I/O timeoutsor SCSI bus hang conditions.

Solution: Do not mix SCSI devices ofdifferent speeds on the same SCSIbus. Another alternative would be toset the sync speed settings in the LSILogic PCI SCSI BIOS ConfigurationUtility on all devices to the speed ofthe slowest device on the SCSI bus.

Problem: Usage of dissimilar SCSIcables, types, and widths may result inone or more devices being unavailable.

Solution: For higher speed devices(Ultra2, Ultra160 in LVD mode, or Ultrain SE mode) do not use older SCSI-1cables or wide/narrow bus converters. All data lines on the SCSI bus must beterminated correctly for properoperation.

Linux SYM53C8XX1.6b

Applixware Software applicationwould not install during test.

Installation may occur only to those8XX devices supported by the versionof the driver bundled in the kernelshipped by your vendor. Therefore, installation is not possible to a diskattached to an LSI53C1010 device atthis time. However, once installationhas completed and the driver hasbeen upgraded to recognize the newchip, reboot is possible.

Problem: Unlimited retries if a disk ispowered off during a write cycle.

Solution: Do not power off a disk dur-ing a write cycle. The driver does notsupport hot plug.

Problem: Unlimited retries if a diskresponds with the wrong phase afterselection.

Solution: SCSI standard requires tar-gets to switch to Message Out phaseafter selection with attention. Disksthat violate this requirement will causemajor failure. Use disks that meet theSCSI standard.

Solaris DMI CI2.10.00

Does not support AMS events.

Component Instrumentation does nothave support enabled for SAF-TE,Network Adapters, or Fibre Channelgroups.

Problem: Ultra160 hard drives onLSI53C1010 adapters show as havinga negotiated speed under Bus PortAssociation of 152 Mbytes/s instead of106 Mbytes/s.

Removable media devices have acheck condition status after mediainsertion which causes the CI to report"Media loaded: False" after mediainsertion.

Solution: None

Problem: When the CI attempts toadd a new device, the service providercorrupts the data, specifically theMedia Data Block Size and FormattedMedia Capacity fields displayed underStorage Devices. The service provideralso causes spaces to appear in theconsole window. The two things occuras a result of the same Service Pro-vider call.

Solution: This bug has been reportedagainst the Solaris Service provider.

*******************************************Problems and Workarounds*****************************************

Problem: On some systems, after areboot the first time a connection isattempted through the proxy server, itwill return a failure that it is unable toconnect.

Solution: A reconnection through theproxy server will work, as will anyother subsequent reconnection untilthe next time the system reoobts.

Problem: On some systems, if yourbrowser is Netscape, you will get anerror dialog when you bring up theHTML page that states a componentcould not be found.

Solution: Click continue, and theNetscape brower will be able to findall the components. The error dialogis incorrect.

Problem: No commercial CertificateAuthorities exist for issuing certificatesfor HotJava. Wihtout a trust root certif-icate, the browser will not run as isunder HotJava.

Solution: In order to run the browserunder HotJava, the broswer must trustthe LSI Logic Certificate. The digitalsignature of LSIDMI.JAR is generatedby LSI Logic, and thus not issued by aCertificate Authority.

Take the following steps:

1. Load the lsidmiHJ.htm page underHotJava.

2. From the menu bar, select Edit -->Preferences-->Applet Security. Awindow appears.

3. Select Low Security for DigitallySigned Applets, and click on the Applybutton.
