Interference-Free Signal Transmission in Industry

Pepperl+Fuchs has used its many years of experience and in-depth knowledge in plant safety to develop the SC-System. The new signal conditioners offer reliable process communications to industry.

Maximum Signal Integrity in Processes Signal conditioners ensure that communication between the field and control level remains free from interference, especially in large plants where signals can be distorted by interference caused by power mains or ground loops. Equalizing currents can occur in such loops if the grounding of high-performance devices is inadequate. Another factor is signal coupling from wireless communications equipment. The new SC-System prevents transmission and control errors using galvanic isolation and provides a seamless and reliable process system – in heavy-production facilities such as those for steel and cement, in power plants, in the water/waste water sector, and in the paper and food industry.

Flexible Use in a Host of IndustriesIn most production facilities, there are processes and tasks in which analog measurements such as pressure, temperature, or fill level must be transmitted without interference so that they can be processed at the control level. In these cases, signal conditioners provide a uniform signal standard, independent of the field devices used. Example applications include pumping fluids through piping, storing bulk goods, and mechanical and chemical treatment.

Precise Temperature Measurement Safeguards ProductionIn general, process steps run optimally only at a stable reaction temperature and must not be dependent on external conditions. Quick and precise temperature measurement influences the service life of machines and plants. Signal conditioners that convert measured data from thermocouples or resistance thermometers are used in rotary kilns for cement manufacturing or in the thermal preparation of wood chips in paper manufacturing.

Protecting the EnvironmentSignal conditioners are used for precise measurement and the conversion of incoming sensor signals when measuring fill levels. For example, the fill level in the lime slurry container for flue gas desulfurization in a furnace must be continually monitored to eliminate any environmental hazards. If the level is too high, an overflow may occur and pollute the groundwater. If the level is too low, the flue gas escapes from the chimney without being cleaned.

Secure Communication in the PlantThe central feature of a signal conditioner is galvanic isolation. This prevents transmission and control errors caused by equalizing currents in ground loops. Ground loops can interrupt communication between field and control levels so that safe process monitoring and control are no longer guaranteed. Frequency converters contain input filters that provide protection against common mode noise caused by electrical drives. These frequency converters prevent faults from reaching the control system and distorting the measuring signals.

Protection against Short Circuits and SurgesThe analog signal conditioner from Pepperl+Fuchs offers protection against short circuits for each individual current loop. In the event of a line fault, the relevant output on the control side is switched to a safe state. This protects other devices against channel faults on the field side. All other channels and connected measuring devices are not affected by the fault and remain operational. Interfering signals can interrupt a signal path if there is an isolation problem in mains-connected devices. In this case, the signal conditioner’s galvanic isolation prevents high voltages from being transferred into the measuring circuit. This protects personnel and equipment from dangerously high voltages.

High Signal Quality in a Wide Range of Applications

Signal conditioners use galvanic isolation to provide seamless communication between field and control levels and protect personnel and equipment from dangerously high voltages.

Conversion to Standard SignalsField devices often supply signals of different standards that cannot be processed at the control level. The signal conversion function of the signal conditioner converts analog signals into standard 0/4…20 mA or 0…10 V signals. This not only guarantees fault-free communication between the field device and the control level, but also means that expensive input cards for the controller are no longer necessary.

Signal Splitting – Multiple Use of SignalsSensor signals are used to control processes and are often required in emergency shutdown and data recording systems. Signal conditioners with a splitting function transmit the measured signal via parallel, galvanically isolated outputs on the control side. This ensures reliable signal forwarding if faults occur and avoids the disadvantages of serial wiring.

Interference-Free Combination of Sources and SinksThe SC-System’s signal conditioners ensure that a measuring channel still operates if current sinking I/O on the field side are combined with current sinking I/O on the control side.

Long service life, compact, low heat dissipation.

The new SC-System signal conditioners from Pepperl+Fuchs are highly cost-effective. They offer an extremely high packing density due to their low heat dissipation and slim design.

Innovative Technology for a Long Service Life All SC-System modules offer an extremely long service life. There are three reasons for this: First, they do not use electrolytic capacitors, as these can quickly degrade in high ambient temperatures and reduce their functionality. The elimination of these components improves the performance of the SC-System and minimizes the probability of failures. Maintenance costs are lower since parts are replaced less frequently.

Second, the PCB transformer windings for galvanic isolation are integrated into the copper of the PCB. This advanced construction design prevents shorted windings, thus improving safety.

The third reason is the automated laser trimming of the fixed resistors. These precisely set resistors replace trim potentiometers, which are susceptible to faults, thereby increasing precision. The EPLAN macros provided contribute to improved cost-effectiveness by simplifying and accelerating commissioning.

Improved Safety for Personnel and EquipmentWith their high levels of galvanic isolation, signal conditioners prevent dangerous voltages from being transferred into the measuring circuit. This protects personnel and equipment. The SC-System offers optimal protection from the transfer of high voltages from AC components with its 300 V working voltage and 2.5 kV test voltage.

Compact – Each Channel Only 3 mm WideA width of only 6 mm and a low height allows a high packing density. SC-System modules require less space in the cabinet and fit in tight spaces between cable channels.

Because no temperature-sensitive electrolytic capacitors are installed, the signal conditioners can be used in an extended temperature range than similar signal conditioners on the market. For the SC-System, this range extends from -25 to +70 °C. The low inherent heating from the low-power design reduces heat dissipation.
