RELIANCE® ELECTRIC SP600™ AC DRIVETHE NEW BENCHMARK OF DRIVE VALUE

The capability of a power system to

reliably deliver speed and torque depends on

the quality and durability of each of its com-

ponents. With power-system components

from Reliance Electric and DODGE members

of the Rockwell Automation family you can

enjoy an unprecedented level of confidence

and peace-of-mind.

• Bearings, couplings, gear reducers,

gearmotors and a wide assortment

of mechanical power transmission

products from DODGE.

• PowerMatched™ variable-speed

motors and drives from

Reliance Electric.

The Reliance Electric/Rockwell Automation

design team is redefining how drives are

developed. From basic studies of material

performance in our laboratories-including

research in IGBT transistor switching

technology– our scientists and engineers are

developing AC drives that set a new standard

in quality, performance, and reliability.

REDEFINING POWER SYSTEM VALUE

Optimal power system performance

and life is the bottom line with a

system composed of components

from Reliance Electric and DODGE®.

These components are designed to

work together in any demanding

industrial application.

2

You know Reliance Electric as the

premier North American supplier of

dependable, variable-speed drive solu-

tions. We are proud to add to this

reputation with the introduction of

the SP600, the first in a new family of

full-featured, highly functional and

flexible AC drives.

With more than 90 years of experi-

ence in developing variable-speed drives

for almost every type of application

imaginable, we know how unforgiving

the industrial environment can be. This

real-world, plant-floor knowledge and

expertise is reflected in the design and

manufacturing of the SP600 AC Drive.

Dirty power is an industrial fact of

life. The SP600 is designed to deliver

reliable performance under a wide range

of frequency variations, voltage dips and

surges. Each SP600 undergoes a pro-

gram of performance and highly acceler-

ated life-cycle testing in addition to volt-

age transient testing of up to 5000 volts.

With standardized communications

modules, the SP600 can be easily modi-

fied in the field for control and monitor-

ing on many open industrial networks.

In spite of its innovative perform-

ance and broad feature set, the SP600

maintains the traditional Reliance Electric

drives heritage for easy set up, configura-

tion and operation. Operators will com-

fortably and quickly migrate from the

SP600 to future Reliance Electric drives

thanks to the common configuration and

control techniques being established by

this new drive family.

Conformance with global standards–

UL, cUL, CE and C-Tick-ensures interna-

tional acceptability and out-of-the-box

performance anywhere in North America,

Europe and Australia.

PRECISE POWERAND CONTROL

PowerMatched™ Motors and Drives from

Reliance Electric assure you of the optimal

power/control solutions for any application in

any industry. With the widest variety of motors

and options specifically designed for use with

today’s AC drives, you get the performance,

mounting and protection characteristics you

need. The added benefit of single-source

responsibility from the recognized motor and

drive leader means you will maximize your

uptime, productivity and peace-of-mind.

3

PERFORMANCE ON DEMANDThe functionality and versatility of the

SP600 makes it an ideal AC drive solution for

a broad range of speed-regulated applications.

The full-featured SP600 AC Drive deliv-

ers the performance and flexibility benefits of

more expensive AC drives, without the com-

plexity or the cost.

Consider the benefits of having both

Sensorless Vector Control and V/Hz operation,

two modes of operation that are standard,

out-of-the-box, in every SP600 AC Drive!

With the SP600, you also get many

additional benefits including:

• A scalable motor overload protection

circuit, from 110% to 400% of rated

motor current, allows you to match

any motor to any oversized SP600 AC

Drive to meet the performance needs

of hard to start applications, while

maintaining proper scaling of the

motor’s protection circuit.

• A unique, built-in Intelligent Thermal

Management™ (ITM) system monitors

the SP600 thermal condition. In the

event of a potential over-temperature

fault the drive automatically adjusts

operating variables, such as carrier

frequency and/or speed, to reduce

the drive’s temperature, allowing

the process to be maintained without

faults and with minimal reduction

in throughput.

• Built-in snubber braking circuitry

and optional drive-mounted resistor

kits save panel space and lower

installation costs.

• Embedded PI control allows the SP600

to be adapted to a variety of process

application requirements. This is made

possible by the two analog inputs

standard on every SP600 model. Use

one input for speed set point and the

second input for process trim to main-

tain constant pressure or flow in any

centrifugal fan or pump system.

• The SP600 standard I/O provides for

two relay outputs to indicate fault,

alarm or drive-ready conditions.

• In the event of a power dip, the drive

automatically decelerates into a

regenerative mode for energy recovery

to avoid a low DC bus fault. It then

returns to the preset speed reference

when AC line power returns to

normal.

• With synchronous-start capability, the

SP600 automatically identifies the

rotating speed of the motor after

recovering from a momentary power

loss and accelerates the rotating load

back to desired speed.

4

With the same 5 HP drive and motor,

low-speed torque regulation remains

excellent, as shown by the vertical

traces, indicating the highly

predictable performance of the

SP600. Allowing the motor to

take full advantage of the

drive’s current capacity

results in extra torque production

during momentary overloads.

SVC PERFORMANCEEXAMPLES

In this case a 5 HP SP600 Drive, with

a continuous rating of 8.0 amps, sup-

plies up to 12 amps (150% overload) to a

1750 rpm base speed, 5 HP Reliance XE

Motor. The motor has a nameplate rating of

6.4 amps, resulting in 200% torque production

at the motor shaft.

SENSORLESS VECTOR AND V/Hz MODES OFOPERATION Choose from two independent V/Hz curves–

an energy saving Fan & Pump curve for vari-

able torque applications and a Custom

curve selection for both linear and shaped

curves in more complex

constant torque applications such as

textile machinery. Two independent

Sensorless Vector Control curves

can be selected, Standard SVC

for good constant torque operation

or SVC Economy, which lowers motor

magnetizing current for energy savings

during periods of steady speed operation.

5

Every frame size is available in a

variety of mounting and enclosure configura-

tions to enhance the versatility and flexibility

of the SP600. Each frame is available in

either NEMA 1 (convertible to IP20) or

NEMA 4X/12 (IP66/54) enclosures.

PACKAGING PERFECTION

For panel mounted installation, the SP600

is available in a flange mounted design. This

through-cabinet design allows heat from normal

drive operation to be dissipated externally from

the cabinet. In addition to reducing panel size

requirements, this design reduces hardware and

installation costs and provides greater reliability

by eliminating the need for auxiliary cooling fans

or air conditioning.

NEMA 1 enclosed SP600 Drives for

wall mounting can be easily converted

to an IP20 panel-mount configuration by

simply removing a cover plate. For

harsher applications where dust, mois-

ture and corrosion are concerns, wash-

down-duty enclosures will meet both

NEMA 4X/12 requirements.

6

Snubber braking resistor kits are easily

mounted on the backside of the drive

heatsink to control speed overshoot and

to regulate deceleration by avoiding high

DC bus faults.

SP600 with space-saving

flange mounting design is

ideal for OEM’s or panel

builders. Heatsinks are treated

with a corrosion proof process

to assure longevity in harsh

environments.

Designed to meet ANSI/NSF51-1997 and NEMA 4X/12 (IP66/54) standards,

this enclosure will withstand direct sprays of up to 1000psi at 6 inches during

washdown operations. Dust particles as small as 22 microns are prevented

from entrance to provide contamination free operations.7

The SP600 LCD OIM (Operator Interface

Module) is easy to understand and use and

offers an unprecedented breadth of function-

ality. With a few simple keystrokes, opera-

tors have access to parameters for configura-

tion, start-up, operation and troubleshooting.

Navigation through the parameter

structure is simplified by allowing operators

to access parameters by group (such as motor

data, speed references I/O, communications

and diagnostics), parameter number, or by

identifying parameters that have changed

from the factory-set defaults.

No drive is easier or quicker to set up,

operate and monitor than the SP600–the first

drive with an icon-based operator interface.

Every member of the new Reliance Electric

AC drive family will have the same basic look

and feel of the SP600.

Once you are comfortable with the

simple operating procedures of the SP600,

you will be equally at home with future

Reliance Electric AC drives family members.

The SP600 allows you to work the

way you want to, without unnecessary

complexity. Motor/drive control

parameters are grouped into three

access levels to reduce set up time

and simplify operation:

• Basic Access, the drive default

level, gives you access to 30

basic control parameters.

• Standard Access provides

access to 60 parameters.

• Advanced Access gives you

access to all parameters.

Read-only access control of configuration

and set-up parameters allows operators to

view settings, but not change values.

Drive performance can be monitored by

motor amps, motor speed and

motor voltage. Application

specific operating values can

be displayed in user-defined

scaling and text, to exactly

match the user’s process-related

production units.

The LCD OIM displays text

in any of six languages–English,

German, Spanish, Italian,

Portuguese, or French–on a

multi-line, easy-to-read, backlit

graphic display. Both icons and international

symbols on the OIM assist in the drives

use in global applications.

For application flexibility, an LED or LCD

OIM can be locally mounted on the SP600

while a remote LCD is connected in tandem

for use from a remote location.

SIMPLE, FAST & FAMILIAR

Operational Status Line indicates drivedirection, operating status, alarmannunciation, auto/manual mode, andpassword log-in status.

Dialog/Info Line shows deviceselected and error text. ScreenData Display shows one, two orthree lines of text containingspecific information or datarelating to process variables.

Function Key Lineidentifies the functionor purpose assignedto each of the fourfunction keys.

LED OIM, comple-menting the LCD version, providesbasic information onone six-digit display.

8

Quick Start Utility, accessible from the

Start Up Icon, provides operators with a

set of the most commonly programmed

parameters. With Quick Start self-

prompting screens, the drive can be

quickly and easily set up without in-depth

knowledge of parameter structure.

Function Keys provide configurable hot-

key functionality for quick and easy drive

configuration and set up and process

operation. For configuration and set up,

each of the four function keys provides

access to factory-assigned operations.

When operating, each function key pro-

vides a shortcut to operator-defined

process operations such as preset

speeds, auto/manual operation and fault

log information. Each function key is

allowed to have two user assigned func-

tions allowing eight possible assign-

ments, eliminating the need for hardwired

pushbuttons and switches.

Parameters can be viewed in factory

defined groups, in numerical order,

or by those which have changed

from factory default values.

Drive Monitoring information can be

reported on the LCD OIM in terms of

output frequency, motor amps, speed or

voltage; or in operator-defined terms

such as gallons-per-minute,

cans-per-hour or bagels-

per-minute. Both units

and text are definable

by the user.

Main Menu Icons allow access, throughdrop-down menus of subdirectories, to all supported drive functions and support-ed devices.

Start Up Icon provides access toQuick Start utility that allows forfast, easy set-up involving onlyseven parameter groups.

Parameter Icon provides quickaccess to drive and peripheral-component parameters.

Control Source Icon allowscontrol and reference selection.

Diagnostics Icon provides infor-mation on faults and alarms.

Display Icon allows operators toconfigure the OIM for language, monitoring, function keys andother considerations.

Memory Icon allows operators toload and save different parametersets into the OIM and, subse-quently, into the drive; or torestore factory-set defaults.

Device Select Icon allows opera-tors to identify and select thedrive or peripheral device fromwhich to obtain data.

Password Icon provides protec-tion against modification of anywriteable parameter by an un-authorized user and selectparameter access levels.
